Fire Chief Reflects on Helene's Effect on His Home Community

- When Bat Cave, NC, was forever changed by Hurricane Helene, the Bat Cave Fire & Rescue Department was the first group to help evacuate their small, remote community. Stephen Freeman, the Fire Chief of the Bat Cave Fire & Rescue Department, was in his garage when his house began to crumble from the rushing flood. However, Stephen miraculously survived and was committed to serving his community. In the end, Stephen is thankful that the strength of the Bat Cave community and support from Samaritan's Purse continues to turn a historic storm into a sign of God's love.

So far the new president has not seemed to focus on people affected by this horrible disaster. He even indicated he would put "conditions" on disaster relief funds. I'm sorry to say but I don't think he cares about anything but his own power and wealth and his billionaire friends he is surrounding himself with. They could certainly afford to help. But I'm afraid they're more concerned about taking over our country for their own benefit. My heart goes out to Western North Carolina and everyone suffering from these disasters.

From Camano Island WA - Cousin lives in Swannanoa, before Helene I had never heard of Bat Cave - now Bat Cave is one of the first place names that I mention to all my family and friends in Washington state. Samaritan's Purse is the one organization I tell them they should consider supporting. For all you who have gone through this awful event, I pray for you every day. ❤❤

We have everything we need always. Everything is each other. I've been praying hard for everyone. And I've been trying to get in touch with the right people to get word out that my husband and I would gladly give 24 families a place to wait out this weather. We have a hotel in Montana and would gladly house folks who've been affected by the hurricane, free of charge. It's not much, but it's a warm safe haven and an honest and loving helping hand.
What a beautiful outlook and attitude-only the peace of knowing Jesus Christ personally as your Savior, can you find this peace. Thank you, Samaritan’s Purse for the submission to Christ’s calling. ❤

It was a true blessing that Samaritan's Purse is headquartered in Boone, NC allowing them to be right near where most of the help was needed for so many counties and other states affected by the Helene floods. Samaritan's Purse was also very lucky they were not in the area devastation. I'm sure God played a hand in that part!! They truly are an organization that has been there for so many other disasters across the U.S.

For those areas that are accessible, can those trees, when dried out, be processed as lumber to rebuild homes? Maybe a lumber mill would be willing to donate time and space to do so?
Those downed trees, brush and debris need to be cleared out, where accessible, before wildfire season hits NC and TN. There is time, but please urge others, including government, to act so there isn't a repeat of CA. I'm praying those areas affected by Helene have enough safe drinking water, as well as water to fight fires if they do hit later this year.🙏

I been praying for all you North Carolina folks from day one. I live in remote North Western Australia but on the opposite side of Australia in Far North Queensland they are being inundated with floods . They have had lots of help and lots of warning so here's hoping that everyone will be ok

Been working down here since the storm. Thank you samaritans purse, Franklin graham, Donald Trump jr, and Kristi Noem for dropping off the much needed supplies to us in bat cave. Those jackets are about the warmest I’ve ever owned 😊 It meant so much to be seen, to be heard, and to be helped.
When bad things happen you can tell what people choose. You can tell them by their choice. NC VS CALIFORNIA. PAY attention. It will tell you loud and clear. My heart is still with you NC yours was natural. California's 😊was man made. Even and evangelist wanted to say it was a natural disaster that hit California. I called him out on it. Sad 😢
What part is man made? I saw where a church had burned to the ground, and another congregation welcomed the members of the church that burned down to worship with them. We are expected to love one another.
There are satellites showing fires going up all at the same time in areas that were nowhere near each other. The theory is that they were caused by arsonists. The winds were NOT man-made, no one in their right mind would say they were, but they certainly fanned the flames into an inferno. The ongoing tragedy of Helene was in no way man made. And these people are apparently getting aid mainly from Samaritans Purse. Perhaps the difference might be that no celebrities or politicians have homes there. Thus no huge outpouring of money. The Californians, however, are not living outdoors in harsh winter conditions. I know that part because I'm FROM Southern California. I know what winters are like there. That being said - BOTH disasters are horrific and tragic. Losses like these ? All suffer. My prayers are with ALL the victims - in BOTH places.

It’s the worst flooding I’ve ever seen. I’ve never seen anything like this. I’m so very sorry for this disaster. You had to get the people off the mountain. The weather just did you bad. I didn’t know Bat Cave was wiped out in 1916. So a hundred years ago it happened. Water can move anything. The whole mountain could have collapsed. I’m so sorry. 🙏🏼💙🧡
