As a Samsung technician, i'd say the 5th generation of Samsung foldables are quite flimsy to work on. Flip 5 is a bit easier opening up with basic tools, but the fold 5 sub Octa screen (small screen) needs special equipment as it sits flash into the frame and the tape adhesive used on it holds too much. Same case with the Samsung S9 ultra tablet, adhesive design is quite tricky. Technicians stay alert!

Crazy how Zack has desensitized us, we watch expensive phones get destroyed like it's nothing. All for the sake of educating us to be more electronics savvy
From personal experience as a former repair tech, the fold 4 required alcohol and heat to soften the adhesive to safely remove the front screen. I assume the 5 is the same way
when i worked at a repair store all of the flip fold screen repairs meant taking the innerds of the host phone and putting it in a new phone since taking the screen off isn't worth potential damage. It also helped that all of these repairs were warranty repairs

Great video! This phone is better than the Note & S series in every way. Except for the camera and no S-Pen slot, IMO. That being said, the camera on this Fold5 is still very good, tho. I love my Fold5.
It is the natural progression for a note user. I had the note 2, 4, and 8 and then graduated to the s21 ultra. The fold 5 is my first foldable phone and it is a sweet device. As much as I wanted the aspect ratio on the front to be more like the pixel fold, I now appreciate the ease of holding and using the fold with one hand for quick checks of messages, but as Samsung has stated, the main screen is the interior one and it's glorious to watch youtube videos and to be able to multi-task on. I tend to only use two apps at a time to multi-task with. My favorite pairing is with the youtube andgoogle maps while I am driving. If you make the jump to the fold, you won't be dissapointed. They gave me 800 bucks for my S21 Ultra so that is why I made the leap. Cheers.
@imisskatelyn9517 I've been on the fence about switching phone service so I may be doing it sooner than later. I do wish the camera had the 100x zoom because it is an incredible feature and very useful.
I switched from the Note 10 to the Fold 3 and my only issue is no S-Pen slot. And so far the only work around to have a case with a slot, but then I can't use the wireless charging with the pen inserted. It's rather annoying, but I still love the fold so far.
@@guybuddy I personally didn't use the zoom so much so it was a tradeoff I could handle in order to gain such screen real estate. It would've been nice to have the S23 Ultra camera setup on thos device due to it being a flagship device. I hope you enjoy it in good health.
Just warranty replaced my Fold 4 for a second time in a year. The first time, it just shut off and stopped working, would not power on. In my research many of the first ones had a problem with the lego connector of one of the ribbons not being set well at manufacturing and they were poping loose fairly early on. I think that was a manufacturing flaw that was fixed relatively quickly. The second one I just replaced today had the dreaded won't open all the way problem. I think as his video shows, fine dirt will get into the hinge area and gum up the works. So kept using with just the slight bend 175° when open, annoying but everything still worked. Problem though after a few months using like this the built in screen protector started to peal up down the middle to the point 1 inch strip hovering over the screen. Many said once you get to that happening repair/replacement or the internal screen will crack and they will say it was your fault. Verizon Extended warranty is covering this one. I think the next innovation the Fold 6 should have is the screws that hold the rear hinge center section, or spine, should be on the outside. So a technician without removing any displays or back glass could remove that spine of the fold while closed, and could vacuum/compressed air clean out the hinge of fine dirt and dust, completely, then graphite lubricate the now clean hinges and the phone would lay flat again. Simply have 6 or 8 tiny security torx screws come in from the outside, make reparability of the hinges much better for the fact they are NOT Dust proof in this area.
Hey Zack, owner of Flip 4 here, the microscopic sand that got into the hinge actually IS an issue. The reason is that once it's there, after you use it for a couple of weeks, the ribbons that connect the halves of the phone get sanded away. So my phone, after some dust got inside and it was working seemingly fine for a while, first had it's microphone disconnected, then the screen, then the screen had magically reconnected, so I used it without a working mic for a while, but after another few weeks, the lower battery started disconnecting, so when I fold the phone, it turns off immediately and shows bad battery. And you know what? To replace those ribbons, that cost 25 centa each, is the same as replacing the entire screen with the phone body, which costs hundreds of dollars, because guess what everything is glued shut and none of those parts any repair services are willing to replace on their own. So please tell about that to your subscribers next time. Thanks for your video :) I'll be trying to fix my flip 4 myself by swapping the working screen into a donor phone soon, we'll see how it goes, hope isopropyl alcohol helps :)
Update: it worked. But the magnet in the new body is too strong and the phone thinks it's closed (as I use the old motherboard calibrated for the old body). So I will need to replace it later. Until that, I carry a magnet in my pocket to place it on the back of the phone so it turns on...
Xiaomi unveiled their fold phone to have such technology but on the hinge (It flexes when the phone is dropped on the hinge to disperse the impact over a larger surface area). It would be nice to have some slo-mo shots of the phones being dropped and actually seeing how it behaves under stress
Got the s23ultra couldn't be happier! I swear the newer ones made later in the year have 0 display issues like earlier. Coming from the s21 ultra my s23 ultra has even more color. No bubbles on the panel either! They definitely listened to the complaints and changed the panels. It's so dang good and crispy!
I really appreciate to engineer that can put many electronic item and mechanism which is high technology inside very thin body and body strong enough for using in everyday life 👍
Hey Zack you mention in all you're teardowns about the speaker foam balls. Next time you teear down a phone, could you empty both speakers of there foamballs before puting the phone back and test how the sound changes when the speakers has balls and no balls :)
This makes me wonder about the new EU regulations going in effect in a few years where every phone needs to have a removable battery. Seeing this teardown, all the things you have to do, to just get to the battery is insane. It's not like it used to be, like with a Samsung S5, pop the back open and take the battery out. Those were the days.
@@kopus7565- They won't. Technology wise it's not practical. They'll just make an ugly version to sell for EU and a more sleek and more hi-tech version to other countries. I bet Iphone will be designing a dumb down version for EU market if the government there are stupid enough to implement such stupid regulations.
My fold 2's battery is expanding, it already opened up the rear cover on its own so that battery is easily replaceable, but seeing how hard it is to remove the front display in one piece even with a lot of heat I don't know if i want to remove the screen now 😮
Usually when buying replacement parts original Samsung you get the display mounted in the housing already so you just switch the insides over. We never repair the foldables though since they are so damn sensitive and too much work sadly. We need to count in the time in the repair and it is not economical with these models i'm afraid.
When I tried to get my Fold 3 repaired under warranty none of the local ifixit places would touch it, despite being official warranty servicers. They made me mail it in to Samsung directly for repair.
@@BloodyLlama759 oh I am so sorry to hear this! :( You are not the first one I've heard this from i'm afraid. Many other places that repairs smartphones won't touch any of the foldable phones. It is real shame really but they aren't made to be repaired easily sadly. The new fold v5 that just dropped is even IP rated so they have gaskets and even more adhesives on to protect it but it makes it even more unrepairable. Just to buy the screen original part is excrutionally expensive. I am guessing you had to pay a high sum for the repair itself?
Keyword “if”. Personally I don’t think apple is interested in them. Take the mini series for example. They were the worst selling iPhones but yet had the strongest community. Everyone who got one loved it and swore by it. But since they didn’t sell like the standards of the pro series, they quit production after releasing just two models. A foldable phone could follow a similar path. But knowing apples reputation, a different path it could take is to be priced extremely high and become the “ultimate phone”. Aka jewerly for rich people. The same path their vr headset is heading.
apple doesnt care about competition so its very likely they wont however, samsung will have a tough time keeping up with other foldables if they continue this trend of not changing anything on their folds
@@addedpoleThe only advantage they have over other foldables is the software and global availability . Huawei ,honor, xiaomi , vivo, oppo have issues here and there and most of these aren't really global phones.
My Mini 6 overheats in hot and humid weather, then shuts down. Many apps are not optimized for it, the keyboard is too small in portrait and too large in landscape and it has a poor display.
And I the only one who giggled when he called it a "z flip 5" at the end? (No hate, just a little giggle) XD XD Awesome info thu. Always great content.
Would have been cool from Samsung to have a message for Zack in that device, maybe on the silkscreen of a pcb. Something like: "Zack we have heard you, pull tabs for everyone." And then him discovering that. That would be priceless.
It's interesting to see how the interconnect ribbon cable folds. It divides the 180° into 3 sections. Ensuring that the cable does not bend more than 60° which should translate to greater durability and more folds before metal fatigue sets in. The pen digitizer feels like a wasted effort. Last I checked with a buddy of mine who owns a f4, he keeps it at home, doesn't find much use of it and wanted to give his away.
That's sortof just the tradeoff with trying to cram as much technology into a compact device. Phones back then were only "easier" to repair because a lot of it was mostly plastic. And even back then people didn't bother repairing them. If your flip phone broke you just buy a new one.
@@0x1EGEN True, but flip phones were $300-400 on the high end and free with a contract. Glass backs have nothing to do with technology. Wireless charging and NFC existed before them just fine. Plus glass is an insulator so it traps heat inside of your phone better than plastic or aluminum which is an excellent heat conductor. Apple realized they could get away with such an anti-consumer move because they said it was their new style and everyone else followed suit.
Honestly, the Honor you shown recently looked a LOT better. Better reparability and looks better too in my opinion. Still... This was an interesting teardown. Sad to see them overlook a few things for a flagship phone that a lot of people would buy to last a few years.
Goodbye bristle cleaners along the fold seam. Apparently at the moment those bristles designed to keep debris out of the folding portion are falling off due to heat. The 5 dies not have the bristles but then I keep my fold 5 in a fully covered cover that covers the hinge also from DBrand. Fantastic cover gives amazing grip. Full protection I'd feel confident if I did ever manage to drop it. And fully covers the hinge. OK sur it doesn't allow the aesthetics to truly shine. But I'd rather have protection than none.
Like foldables or not, you still have to appreciate the engineering that goes in those hinges

"From the window to the walls" You crack me up dude... hopefully theres no sweat in there. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
5:13 I'll pull out the NFC coil which works. Not confused with NFTs, which doesn't work 😅
the hinge is incredible simple, very different of what i thought.
“Now as an adult you could go outside whenever you want, but here we both are.” Bro chill
ini yang selalu saya tunggu.
terimakasih bang jerry 😊.
semoga sehat selalu . dan dilancarkan segala usahanya ❤
I want S23U
I'm 70% water 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣. Zach is hilarious sometimes. Yet still so monotone. I love it!
Wow! Keep it up. I love that there enthusiasts are actually showing the insides and physical strengths of products
I just realized i'm the first one
Love the Lil Jon's quote! Used to sing it when my kid used to run from the window to the wall 😀
If a company tells Zack exactly what their phone has, he just can't have their word for granted, he wants to check that himself 🤣
I really appreciate to engineer that can put many electronic item and mechanism which is high technology inside very thin body and body strong enough for using in everyday life 👍
"With the screen successfully unsuccessfully removed" this made me laugh so hard idek why 😂😂
I like the surgical precision that was applied in this video.
5:53 - 10 out of 10 is too generous. If it had a removable battery like my Note 4, then it would be worthy of a 10.
One of the batteries is literally placed between 2 oled panels. Removable? How so?
I like the labelling on the ribbon cables, seems to me like a W for repairability
It's always nice to see the teardown of a phone you own. (Watching on a Z Fold 5)
y
Never thought I'd day something like this but those are some neat Lil hinges
“We should start seeing screws if we enter using the correct direction.” Me overthinking 😂
The sass levels in this one are too high 🙌🔥🔥 and i love it
''from the window to the wall''' yeah.. hes one of us guys, our generation... vrrroooooommmmmm
Another fold screen bites the dust. Jerry Rig gives screen manufacturers nightmares as well as Samsung. 🤣🤣
Hey Zack you mention in all you're teardowns about the speaker foam balls. Next time you teear down a phone, could you empty both speakers of there foamballs before puting the phone back and test how the sound changes when the speakers has balls and no balls :)
Watching these videos never gets easier
That hinge is pretty impressive.
Jerry never disappoint to rig everything
This makes me wonder about the new EU regulations going in effect in a few years where every phone needs to have a removable battery. Seeing this teardown, all the things you have to do, to just get to the battery is insane. It's not like it used to be, like with a Samsung S5, pop the back open and take the battery out. Those were the days.
They just won't sell it here. Foldables are useless anyway.
@@DarkOfGold nah they will EU is definitely one of their bigger market areas
Having a removable battery does not mean you need to provide a simple or relatively non-destructive method of opening the device is also required.
The EU needs to focus on things that actually matter, and keep their hands out of my phone and my pockets.
I know you're tired of me saying this but great video!
My fold 2's battery is expanding, it already opened up the rear cover on its own so that battery is easily replaceable, but seeing how hard it is to remove the front display in one piece even with a lot of heat I don't know if i want to remove the screen now 😮
don't burn your house down. that battery is giving you warning signals.
Lol it's a fold 2. Hammer and chisel yo
lol the successfully unsuccessfully part made me laugh out loud
Wonderful teardown. This is such an amazing phone. Congratulations to Zach on reaching 7.8 million subscribers.
Wow the engineering behind those hinges are awsome
Glad to see the foldable phones improving a little with each generation
Zack, love the watch! Casio F91w gang!
Rise and shine, it's "taking apart the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 to reveal all its guts" time! Have fun!!
That hinge is really amazing engineering creation
_"From the window...._

*Well* played, sir. 😅
Oh no! You murdered it!
You skinned it alive!
Literally a table 😂
Samsung Z Table 5
But a small Tablet
Are we just going to ignore that "Get Low" reference?
Genius!
Loving the humour in this video. Well done
THUMBS UP FOR BATTERY PULL TABS!!!!

They are forced. So is apple.
EU regulations.
Both companies greedy so discussion is useless.
Useless if you can't open the phone without breaking it.
your voice makes this theraputic
Apple is going to have a tough time keeping up when and if they make a foldable.
Nah here's an iPad mini!
The same path their vr headset is heading.
apple doesnt care about competition so its very likely they wont
however, samsung will have a tough time keeping up with other foldables if they continue this trend of not changing anything on their folds
(No hate, just a little giggle) XD XD
Awesome info thu. Always great content.
Would have been cool from Samsung to have a message for Zack in that device, maybe on the silkscreen of a pcb. Something like: "Zack we have heard you, pull tabs for everyone." And then him discovering that. That would be priceless.
Love The Knives! 😎 Amazing Engineering!
6:21 - Get low (to the windows, and the walls, to the walls, till sweat drops down ma b----)
You sir do the best ASMR videos!
Love your content. Keep up the great work!
thumbs up for the 70% water joke, made my Friday! 😂
0:46 And me since I am 70% water 😂😂😂
Omg, taking parts from you to these phones would be awesome :P
It's interesting to see how the interconnect ribbon cable folds. It divides the 180° into 3 sections.
Ensuring that the cable does not bend more than 60° which should translate to greater durability and more folds before metal fatigue sets in.
The pen digitizer feels like a wasted effort. Last I checked with a buddy of mine who owns a f4, he keeps it at home, doesn't find much use of it and wanted to give his away.
Holy moly, that's one wild hinge! 😁
Just when I think phones can't possibly get more unrepairable, I see a video like this.
Just got mine today late to the party but happy 😊
Wait, if those 2 separate golden panels were digitizers, does that mean the spen doesn't work in the space between the 2 sides of the inner screen? 🤔
software calibration
3:15 that hit deep 😢 I would go out for a walk but after a 10 hour shift I’ll pass
Now that's what we call can claim as a "tear"down.
బుర్రపాడు 🤯 ఇంత వివరంగా నువ్వే చెప్పగలవు అన్నా🥰🥰 బాగుంది💕
