You need to see them marching in Mardi Gras Rex parade 2020. You are really doing something to be invited to march in Rex. He finishes his moves cleaner and sharper. That said he gives credit to the other drum majors and the band.

Out of all the schools Justin could’ve chosen he chose them. That should mean something. I think he’d do ASU proud. Doc might want to look across the way at JSU and their crab DM-the young man from Skyline HS in TX (he was one of their DMs). No shade intended. I live for all the SWAC schools.

I just wish the reverse situation was just as fruitful... black drum majors leading mostly white corp bands... i was in that position and had so much hate from the jealous ass parents of the white kids that didn’t make it. But... hopefully the kids keep turning the world upside-down.
Glad you reviewed JDHS talented band and DM’s. Justin Heideman is one gifted young man among our superstar Black DM’s. He has internalized our African rhythms into his dancing ability. The ability to control and isolate the movements to the layers of rhythms in the music isn’t easy for many people even within the Black culture. He grew up around our culture and seems to have a natural affinity what makes us a beautiful race. He stands out because it’s not expected that he can dance like this. The Black DM’S are expected to meet the challenge so it’s not that they aren’t recognized for their talented awesome movements. It’s just not as much of a surprise. This happens in other dances of the African diaspora when a White student excels.
Vanilla Funk is super talented as a drum major, but in my opinion, choosing Alabama State University was a bad decision if he wants to be a drum major. Dr. Oliver will never put him in front of the Marching Hornets. If Haymer was still at Southern University and Vanilla Funk told him he wanted to lead the jukebox, I bet Haymer would say "let go, let's see what you got."
Big mistake. I think you're soooo right. Because we have not seen him at ASU speaks volumes. I personally think he should have researched it more...wonder if he could transfer out and get a spot over there 🤔
