  • Greetings everyone! Join me for part 2 of my Mythbusters Special series. In this series I will be building the Italeri TR-1B (U-2) Trainers in 1/48 scale. This has been a project I've been wanting to build for a while and in this video I show all of the work that went in to preparing the wings and painting an all black aircraft!

Really a stunning build! In 2016 we had the NASA ER-2 in my home country Namibia doing weather research. I am an ATC and it was fascinating to see the Chevy speed behind the landing plane and hear the driver talk the pilot down. I was lucky to be allowed to check out the cockpit! The U-2 actually has elements of the F-104, I read somewhere.

top work.......i want to make a u-2r without the mission pods so your build is super handy for sorting the wings

I heard of 2 ways to get rif the Silvering on the Decals, brush a small amount of Tamiya Thin Cement over the Decals after they are Dry and you have sprayed you Flat coat.
It will melt the Decal film and trapped air.
Another trick I have tried is to put some Future or Glosscoat on the area where the Decals are going to be placed.
As soon as you remove the Backing paper from the Decal, dip the Decals in a cup of Future or Gloss Coat and place the Decals on the model.
Take dry Cotton Bud or Q-tip and roll it over the Dry to absorb any extra liquid and as it dries over night it should suck out any trapped air under the Decals.
The only bad thing that Future Floor Wax is that it is no longer being made.
Another trick I tried with on Italeri Decals is after you remove the Decals from the Backing paper is dip ithem in a cup of 50 percent Water and 50 percent White Glue.
Put the Decal down where you want it and the take Dry Cotton Bud or Q-tip and roll it over the Decal.
This to will remove any Silvering of the Decals.
    Hope this helps.

I've tried the trick with the Tamiya thin cement with mixed results, but I haven't heard of the adding some PVA glue though, I might have to give that a try sometime. Thank you for taking the time to write these down, its much appreciated!

Thank you for posting the problems with the build and the silvering. The build is really nice as well as the plane. Cheers.

Nice job! I’m building the Monogram 1/48 scale P-61 Black Widow and your video will help me a lot! Thanks!

@@HammerheadModelMaking, it’s an old kit and requires some work for a proper fitting, but has a lot of parts that can be detailed. Once done I’ll post a short video of the final outcome. Ciao!

Glad to see you posted the U-2!
You did an amazing job with the kit, I love it. I think the problem with the silvering started with the aqua gloss, I have mixed thoughts about the product...
Some times it's wonderful, and other times it's awful, I don't know how to explain it, I haven't figured out yet why it gives some times a grainy texture, it's not about applying to little or too much, it's weird. The last time I used it and worked nicely I was applying it quite heavy I think the product doesn't like to self level on the surface, the solvaset does a great job, but with an irregular textured surface kinda struggles some times.
It's good to hear that you fixed the silvering on the final model, you did such an amazing job, that would be a shame to keep it shelved and forgotten.
Great video too! Keep them coming ;)

Thanks man! I appreciate it. Normally I don't have issues with the Aqua Gloss, but I think it was a combination of the Italeri decals, and not putting enough gloss on, I ended up with more of a satin finish and not a true gloss finish when I applied the decals, but who knows! Its entirely possible it was just simple user error! Thanks for watching!

You should polish the surface after each step of paining: before primer, after primer and after each paint/varnish coat. That work prevents decals silvering cause you transfer them to a mirror-smooth surface where decal lacquer base is not visible.
If you want a mat surface you can use mat varnish as a last step.

      @@HammerheadModelMaking welcome! :)
Actually that's why people shoot gloss clear varnish before and after the decals. But this doesn't remove the need to polish layers anyway.

There was a lot of dark, rusty brown on the originals. It's looking good.

Ah man, you shouldn't have used the gloss... im stationed at Beale AFB, so I've seen these first hand (that jet too), and trust me when I say that these jets are insanely matt in finish.

    • @HammerheadModelMaking
      @HammerheadModelMaking  Рік тому

The gloss coat was simply to aid in applying the decals, I did a final matte coat before the end of the video.

@@HammerheadModelMaking ah, I did notice that, but I think it could use a few more matt layers. like I said, the finish is almost chalky in texture.
I think you did an amazing job! Im going to make my own (which is the reason I'm here), and im definitely going to use some of these techniques!

this isn't meant to be an insult but I feel like I'm getting commentary on model building from Chris Griffin. Your voice is uncannily similar.

I have a policy: If I have to mute part of a video because of music, it gets a dislike. This is unfortunate in this case, because the music was the only thing I didn't like.

Interesting policy, was the intro music too loud or you didn't like the particular song choice?
