    What a nice birthday surprise, the person expects a happy birthday song but gets satanic summoning chant instead, it would be also nice if the record burst on fire by the end.

    This reminds me of my first record player which was so electrically scary that I turned it by hand and played a random selection of jumble-sale 45RPM records with a violent 78RPM metal needle. It worked. I had hours of fun playing music and grinding new deeper spirals into those records.

    • @bjfincher773
      @bjfincher773 8 років тому +17

      Funnily enough, the 'record player' on Voyager works on exactly the same principle as this. It's not just a Technics that they glued to the side, it had to be completely mechanical to account for contingencies where the 'disc-overer' didn't have access to electricity.

    • @Spacekriek
      @Spacekriek 8 років тому +2

      +captainpanic08 It kind of makes sense what you say but in the Wikipedia article concerning the golden record there is mention of the instructions supplied to an alien life form how to view the pictures, it looks like the creators of the disc assumed aliens will also use some kind of television system like our earthlings. That, of course, cannot be done mechanically but electronically.

    • @bjfincher773
      @bjfincher773 8 років тому +1

      +Spacekriek Funny you mention that! If you're interested in this you should research Phonovision and the recordings made of John Logie Baird's mechanical television system. Recordings of non-electronic transmitted images from way back in 1932!

    I saw something similar to this demonstrated in 1980 by a Baptist missionary to Africa, where there might not be means for electricity. The one I saw worked. The hole was off center so a stick or pencil could be inserted to spin, and the paper was a thin corrugated cardboard covered in wax.

    This reminds me of another birthday card. Have you seen the grooved plastic strips that you pull through your fingers with your thumbnail scraping the grooves. Sometimes you see the end attached to a balloon. The grooves produce a person saying “happy birthday.” Very cool idea. Hope you can find these and demo them for us. I’m still waiting for the DOT to create these grooves in the highway concrete to say “slow down” or whatever when you drive over them.

    No the record cannot be played on a typical record player because the spindle hole is smaller than normal.

    Reminds me of a birthday card my father bought for his mother in the early 60s. It was actually a four-sided card that could be played on a standard record player playing, of course, Happy Birthday Mother plus a message. As my grandmother didn't have a player, it was never sent, so I still have it. A pure novelty. I was also reminded of the 'make-your-own-record' booths in which for a half-crown coin (2/6d / 12½p), one could make a two-minute recording onto a 45rpm disk. I used these booths a lot in the 60s for sending messages to my penfriends abroad, but some hopefuls used them as mini demo recordings to send to record producers. After all, it was 60s Liverpool and the MerseyBeat sound was in full swing.

    so interesting to me the principles and dynamics of vinyl recording in the original way, that the actual sounds are transcribed through vibration. ...no digital...no magnets...just airwave vibrations making notches in wax...pure frequency. ...I can understand why people believe it's the medium with the best audio fidelity....I've heard of a guy who can "read" a record by deciphering the notches, and tell you what's on it... (of a limited catalogue , I'm sure)...also neat how on a record player, if you turn the speaker off, you can hear the sound coming from the record at the needle...

    Many many years ago Toyota made something almost identical for its French market, as an advertising gadget. It said something like "Bonjour, je suis votre concessionaire Toyota" ("Hello, I'm your Toyota Dealer"). I remember it was better made, as the "base" was flatter and more stable. Also, the "record" had a circular housing for the fingertip, making the spinning super easy. All in all a very clever and original idea...

    This video single-highhandedly taught me how Vinyl records work. I didn't know that it's literally making the sound by scratching it! And it doesn't even need electricity to produce the sound, only for spinning the record itself. I'm sorry for being ignorant, as I was born in the digital audio age and never got a chance to play with record players before.

    Sounds scary...😂 I used to have one similar thing in my childhood. It was a Vynil about Jesus' ressurection. A father telling the story to his son. But the vynil had a small hole, so we could use a pen to spin it. It was easier to spin the vynil. Impossible to maintain the speed the whole time though... 😁
