Have you looked up how George barris in the early 2000’s got his hands on a screen used Back to the future 3 delorean? He was asked to prepare it for display at the Peterson. It was criminal what he did to that car. He sprayed the windows black, so he didn’t have to work on the inside. He would also attach Christmas lights to the back of the car. Thank god it would later receive a proper restoration. But he had nothing to do with the original builds of the time machine. That honour goes to Kevin Pike and his team at filmtrix.
@12:29 you flashed up the Mad Max Pursuit Special. Barrow never built that one, even if he claims he did. The movie's art director Jon Dowding designed the Interceptor and commissioned Melbourne-based car customizers Graf-X International to modify the Ford GT Falcon.

Although legendary, he also claimed he built a lot of cars he didn't. Your video proves that. Including claiming Herbie the Love Bug. There's a video floating around somewhere of it.
Hi Craig good video. Barris took credit for a lot of things he wasn’t involved with. The two prominent examples are the Monkeemobile and Black Beauty which were built by Dean Jeffries. So he was trying on the same stunt with you. I never understood why it was so difficult for older hot rodders to embrace tuners. I got into the tuner scene while developing products for TRD back int the late 90s to mid 2000s. I loved the tuners because the reminded me of Camaro, Chevelles and Cudas I cut my teeth on. Cars are cars and it should all be one big brotherhood of gear heads.
I’ve been tuning my 1990 MR2 Turbo and my 1994 Celica Turbo with TRD parts since the late 1990s. I’ve had a never ending series of TRD parts and apparel. Can you tell us any interesting stories from during your parts development days?
@@negativeindustrial I could probably write a book. We did supply the TRD Supra hoods for all the back up cars used in the film. It took two weeks to convince TRD Japan that this was good exposure and hence a good investment. In the end they were pleased with the results.
He's not just trying to make it sound like they were screen-used, he's heavily implying he was the one who built them for the movie in the first place. Holy shit. Also, as I've already seen others point out, both the Black Beauty and Monkeemobile were built by Dean Jeffries, NOT Barris. But of course Barris would never correct anyone for saying he did.
Let's face it, when Barris tired to get into imports his talent and legend hit a curb and burst into flames. What he did to those imports was vandalism, Barris was just a Ricer. Thanks for this video Craig, I didn't know Barris was such a Charlatan.
I remember Indian Larry talking about how he loved exposed wires and plumbing, saying how it makes the bike more visceral and mechanical. Like an actual machine, as opposed to a piece of candy. I liken it to the appeal of a great steam engine, where you can see all the pistons and valves and gubbins working away. Barris seems to have gravely misconstrued that statement. All of the wires and tubes on Larry’s choppers actually had a purpose.
George Barris did a lot of shady things that’s for sure. He never built the monkees coach but he sure took credit for it. He took credit for several builds that he had nothing to do with.
From his actions of claiming a lot of cars that he never created, who's to say he truly wasn't the one who created the Batmobile either? I mean this guy has told so many lies and has tried to claim so many vehicles, who's to say he's a big fraud from beginning 🤔 I mean it was the fifties after all, there wasn't a lot of forms of getting your name out there kind of like how there is with social media and the internet nowadays, who's to say he didn't rip it off of somebody and steal their idea and come out with it before the guy had anything to say about it that actually created the design and who's to say his whole life all his Vehicles he supposedly created are the same way and it's not just the Batmobile 🤔 I mean look at the cars he has gained that we know for a fact he worked on and then go back and look at those old Vehicles that he supposedly created, yeah something doesn't add up, because I know for a fact he didn't create the Back to the Future DeLorean, Robert Zemeckis did, and the Mad Max Intercepter was created by Murray Smith, Peter Arcadipane, Ray Beckerly, and James Ward, and the Ghostbusters ecto-1 was created by Steven Dane, so its like yeah....... I wouldn't be surprised if KITT from Knight Rider was stolen too or the Munster vehicles just nothing documented......
Yes there were cars Barris Kustom didn't buid that George took some credit for but the cars he did build were built and designed under the Barris Kustom business nane . George had ( for the time ) high profile designer's and builder's help do his cars and therefore they are Barris cars built under the Barris name .. they got paid like we all do at work , we don't always get credit for what we do at work the employers or managers do.. it's no different. Barris kustom did build cars for Knight rider, the Super purist mode and the convertible cars and also the right hand drive blind car. Tom Daniels and George designed the Munsters Koach and yes Tom was a big name back then but he did it paid for under the Barris kustom name so it's a Barris car..
@6:05 i don't know if you know this but Barris really didn't do all the awesome work done on the early movie and tv show cars, it was his brother SAM Is the man who Designed and built most of the early TV and movie cars. George was the face of the two because Sam didn't want the fam he just like to make kool sh!t and George wanted to be the tb star.. he did just that but he was a joke and you can tell when Sam stopped working with him the cars and trucks got really shitty
There are actually two Barris's. There's George, who everyone knows (who really was just a promoter, hence bad design sense), and then his older brother Sam, who was the real genius (sam died in 1967). I would suggest looking up Sam, and you will actually regain a lot of respect for the Barris name, as Sam was responsible for a large amount of the most iconic 1950s customs, and custom car trends which continue on till this day!
That’s cool you took the high road, you could’ve easily been like “fuck that guy” and I think nobody would’ve blamed you, but instead it really speaks to YOUR character 🤝👏👏👏

Wow....never would have imagined hearing a story like that about Barris. Sounds like plagiarism 101....make one question the legitimacy of all the other cars he supposedly built. It also makes you question Mecum car auctions and the background check they do on cars being sold.
Funny thing? A lot of Barris' best, in my eyes, were from Dean Jefferies- who in the end really disliked Barris, to put it mildly. Most of Barris' stuff was way too tacky for my tastes- my favorite car that came from Barris was the dark green '68 Dart GTS that was on "Mannix."
I'm going to copy my coment from the other video: From a design standpoint, I always thought that his work, with a couple of exceptions, is vastly overrated. Plus, I've heard several rumours about how many of those cars weren't actually designed by him, but he took the credit, and your story makes them more believable. I have been thinking for a long time about doing videos about car design, specially about how we idealize some names, and Barris is on the top spots of the list....
The Barris cars you like, were probably all built by his brother Sam. George was never a designer, however his brother Sam was the real deal. Thats why there was a drastic change in design at the Barris shop in 1960 when Sam stepped away. That being said, George photographed everything and did the world a major service by documenting basically everything they did.
The only real big car he made waa the batmobile which was basically a stock concept cars with a lot of buttons added to the interior. Barris was well known for this kind of thing in the rod/kustom world. Have a word with Steve Scott who built the UnCertainT to see what kind of underhand bullying he used even in the early days. Shame, I used to really like Barris until I learned of his nefarious antics.
Disappointing, right? Here was a guy that created so many iconic cars that many of us have fond memories of, including Craig, and to find out he just wanted to cash-in on the latest trend is kinda sad. I'm glad that Craig, despite his negative interaction with Barris, chose to end his video giving Barris props for his contributions to automotive culture.
Old man late to the party and then tries to play like he's young and "jiggy with the new"... I have a boss just like this. Mad respect for the guy but redirecting is often necessary
Saw that knock off red Rx7 in Daytona Beach when the car museum it was in was auctioning off all their cars. Barris was there. It impressed by the guy seeing him in person.
George Barris obtained his Fame and Name all fair and Square. Then he lost it all, got power hungry, what a Shame. Built famous vehciles in and out, then when that ended, began chasing clout. Did stupid things, got called out. Is he in Heaven? I highly doubt. Rest in Piss, Forever Miss. Mr. George Barris In all honesty, even if his brother built all of his famous Cars, we cannot doubt that he lost his respect doing what he does best: Being himself.
@@americanbadass88 Barris still made some iconic cars in his heyday. But he was clueless on the import scene and a scummy businessman. Coddington, however, 100% hack. He’s almost solely responsible for the tacky billet wheel fad of the early 2000s.
I use to watch “American Hotrod” on Discovery Channel back in the early 2000”’s. The way Coddington treated some of his employees is shameful. After a couple of episodes, I stopped watching. Sorry, but not sorry, Coddington was a douche.
yeah well he could have attracted young people while sticking to classic cars, I think, with all the nostalgia going on these days ... which is of course only my personal opinion ;-)
young people were never going to know who he was was or what he did. all the tv show cars he did were in the 60s. he was way past his time. plus his "fabrication" skills were ok for the 60s tv screen where the resolution was fuzzy and there were no close ups. no way would his work survive in the modern era of high definition cameras and internet.
Why is the camera off center with you looking into the distance? looks stupid and ive never understood why people do that in videos and movies/interviews
I talked George Barris several times at various events and was invited to come to California but was never able to go. I have several items and diecast signed by him.
They say never meet your hero’s… but I think meeting Paul would never be a bad experience… looks like Barry, builds were just cheap shit tech screwed on
You need to update this video again. You keep showing pictures of cars as cars he built that he had nothing to do with. Back to future car...ecto 1...black beauty all were not built by him. His style was easy to see its that 60s 70s look. Dude got lucky with batmobile mainly cause he got the futura concept car to use and was a hanger on in movie car world ever since claiming cars he had nothing to do with. You arent helping showing all these classic movie cars while talking about him.
That's what I was thinking too, the Back to the Future DeLorean and its history after the movie has been well-documented about who built it and what shop, I've never heard Baris's name attached to it. I agree by showing all these cars it only helps perpetuate George's self misrepresentation of the projects He was never involved in.
I ordered a slip on wheel cover. I didn't put it on and it is sitting next to me as I type this. It been there for months. I think it is planning to choke me.
PLEASE UPDATE THIS AGAIN ITS STILL WRONG. most of the cars you showed at the end are other cars barris lied about helping with. i know FOR A FACT he did nothing on the ECTO 1 from ghostbusters or the delorean time machine, so please check those movie cars you showed and remove the ones he didnt build because im tired of him getting credit for shit he never did

Old man late to the party and then tries to play like he's young and "jiggy with the new"... I have a boss just like this. Mad respect for the guy but redirecting is often necessary
Didnt know you were from Strong Island originally. im a skip across the water in CT but go boating in Watch hill on weekends in RI
Fake It, Til you make it.
In a literal sense
Saw that knock off red Rx7 in Daytona Beach when the car museum it was in was auctioning off all their cars. Barris was there. It impressed by the guy seeing him in person.
Heard this story on Smoking tire podcast great one actually barris used to tried to claims other cars as his

Fast But not so Furious
It's true- NEVER MEET YOUR HEROES!
Just like Elon Musk, disappointed by his personal hero in the worst way : talking to him.
Mr. George Barris
In all honesty, even if his brother built all of his famous Cars, we cannot doubt that he lost his respect doing what he does best:
Being himself.
Don’t tell me that Barris tried to take credit for the Mad Mad Interceptor. He might be even worse than Coddington.
What's with Boyd Coddington? Another one to add to the list?
i'm glad im not the only one that thought Barris and Coddington were completely OVERRATED HACKS
Great video
He is more of a person that won't let go of the past and move on
HMS Hood a Admiral class battlecruiser
Barris just wanted to attract to young people, but he had a problem. He specialized on classic cars.
yeah well he could have attracted young people while sticking to classic cars, I think, with all the nostalgia going on these days ... which is of course only my personal opinion ;-)
young people were never going to know who he was was or what he did. all the tv show cars he did were in the 60s. he was way past his time. plus his "fabrication" skills were ok for the 60s tv screen where the resolution was fuzzy and there were no close ups. no way would his work survive in the modern era of high definition cameras and internet.
keep up the good work you build good cars
Why is the camera off center with you looking into the distance? looks stupid and ive never understood why people do that in videos and movies/interviews
I talked George Barris several times at various events and was invited to come to California but was never able to go. I have several items and diecast signed by him.
Love the Buford T reference 🤣
I can see the hate, at the same time you are trying to praise him. No wonder he has been forgotten.
Are slip on steering wheel covers that bad? Lol
…yes
They say never meet your hero’s… but I think meeting Paul would never be a bad experience… looks like Barry, builds were just cheap shit tech screwed on
the Monkeemobile's original designer and fabricator was Dean Jeffries though
How can I put this nicely as I can but Barris customizing was every outdated, trashy, and ridiculous
Leave it to George Barris to mess things up.
I love the model of HMS Hood
And Lexington. 👍
Faster and more furious. Thats so lame 😂😂😂
Long Island, NY … my man was once my neighbor 😂
Damn. That super stocker model kit looks awesome. I kinda want one.
Atomic batteries to power! Turbines to speed!
Love the “Bat Turn.” 😆
I ordered a slip on wheel cover. I didn't put it on and it is sitting next to me as I type this. It been there for months. I think it is planning to choke me.
PLEASE UPDATE THIS AGAIN ITS STILL WRONG. most of the cars you showed at the end are other cars barris lied about helping with. i know FOR A FACT he did nothing on the ECTO 1 from ghostbusters or the delorean time machine, so please check those movie cars you showed and remove the ones he didnt build because im tired of him getting credit for shit he never did
You can present factual evidence regarding that.
@@traviswalker8933 wdym just google it lol
@@DYFEA you started this discussion, so you should come up with the relevant evidence.
@@traviswalker8933 geez man calm down this isnt that important. Stephen dane did the ecto 1 and rob zemekis, bob gale, and michael fink did the delorean. Its easy to find.
@@traviswalker8933 No, he said the truth, but it's not his job to now lay down everything for your lazy ass to see. Make your own research lmao
Why didn't you continue with the franchise after 2f2f?
Someone can own a Prius and still be a car enthusiast. I used to have a 2008 Prius, and my current daily is a 2020 RAV4 hybrid. My current fun car is a 612 whp 2004 sti.
Prius get alot of hate but for a daily driver they re good if you have to commute alot of miles
11:33 hahahahaha
You're my hero!
George Barris also created James Dean's Porsche 550 Spyder, aka Little Bastard.
Nope - Dean Jefferies did this... another Barris hack.
Saw it sold on Harrison Barret . Just a stock shit box with a fancy look went for a record breaker.
Crazy ppl
Yes he is known for taking credit for cars he did not build
Still waiting on the truth about what happened too the little bastard James Deen car
I've heard reports of it hiding behind a false wall in the bay area. I know someone who saw it about 15 years ago. The transaxle sold for 450K recently. I remember seeing it on ebay in 2002 selling for $25k!
@@kellyscars Ive heard of the trans-axle being located but never any rumors about the chassis
🤣We all now very well you was watching Carebears🤣
Great videos
Hey Craig, you need a better sounding car for your intro haha. Awesome video though 👍🏼
Hahaha wait, screw in exhaust?
damn never meet your heroes i guess
4th comment, Craig! Love these videos man!!!
gorge seems like a cool guy, but i dont think he can handle a supra, glad the supra didnt go down the pep boys isle
George is a cool dude but he sure went off the deep end with those "replicas" and the Supra deal. I chalk it up to old age and a bad time in his life. At least the Rx7 was an automatic and its easily fixable.
The more and more I learn about hi, I wouldn't call him a cool dude at all....
Disenfranchised?
Discouraged, disrespected or disappointed but disenfranchised, Nah...
GTA animation feels...
You call yourself a car guy. At 12:07 you have a picture of Ed Big Daddy Roth.
Let's go Brandon!!
BBBBBBBBAAAAAAAAA
So who got salty ?
Why an updated upload ?
. . . was someone offended with the first draft ??
Idk but it is a shorter video than the first draft even with the new info. He also was harsher when recalling the story than this time
@@CruzzzControl1984 10:40 . . I think that auction part is new. I was listening to this video on the drive to work this morning. I don't recall that part about the auction in Florida and the fake F&TF Replicas for sale.
@@CruzzzControl1984 dang I wish someone had a reupload
If I remember correctly, he also had influence on the original K.I.T.T. design on Knight Rider.
No just another car he took credit for .that was crrated by glen larson. He also tried to take credit for the general lee and back to future car. Guy was a physco.
First 💯
George Barris is a joke.
Im surprised Universal allows you to make money off this.
What do you mean, he's not using their property... He's telling stories, they aren't always the best or most entertaining, but the comments sections are hilarious
By your logic, movie critics should it be paid for movie reviews? GTFOH
@@craigliebermanyou tell em Craig
@Vegas I would be honored...
@Vegas he shouldn't have sold his GTR 34 skyline... Also want to. Know what he feels about Tokyo.. Drift... Cuz I heard drift King actually did some of the stuns of the movie.. And it goes back to that anime called initial D that's where I got introduced to the STIs.. GtRs.. Rx7s... Which was basically inspired of true events by the drift King.. And he had something to do with it.. That's why it's so realistic and good...
