I’m so glad you made a video about this show. This show deserves more hype and more dissections and video essays/reviews/recaps this show is one of the best portrayals of covert narcissism and manipulation I’ve ever seen on screen.
I’m so glad I’m not the only one out here that notice the (not so subtle) signs of narcissism ESP when it comes to Stephen. I tried to find content on YT explaining the psychology behind this show but really only came across this video & one other
This show is very underrated in my opinion! I didn't start watching it until season 2 released. My reaction was "wow how did I miss this show in 2022". This is one of the best portrayals of narcissism & manipulation I've seen. The way the characters all lie to each other makes it frustrating but exciting at the same time. Also the nostalgia of this show is great due to the music & the late 2000s technology. Also, I like how it doesn't sugar coat what happens in college (partying, drinking, sex etc)
I watched both seasons thinking it was Shailene (with died hair, and I thought she did some lip fillers etc..) only to google the show after finishing it to see online reviews and realising that it wasn’t fillers, just another actress 😭
I could not make it through the first few episodes of season 1 of "Emily in Paris." When I stumbled upon "Tell Me Lies" in 2022, I was hooked. Glad to see you found it!
Ill say this about Stephen’s mom- its not that she “cant afford” his college- she’s punishing him for helping his little sister get away from her by helping her apply to a boarding school.
I just wanted to thank you for your videos. I haven't watched most of the films you are talking about, but I find your videos genuinely conforming. You're hilarious and give of the vibe of a straight man who's confident with his masculinity and is a feminist (which I love). Thank you again :)
I really like Diana, even when she's first introduced she's nice to Lucy who's a complete stranger. I hope she finds someone better than Stephen in season 2.
Omg yes! I LOVE this show and I don’t know anyone who watches it! You are so right, Stephen is actually the worst but he’s so fun to watch because it’s so horrific. I have so many thoughts - I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on season 2 esp with Diana.
I didn’t like Diana at the start, and i loved when Lucy slapped her, but now with Diana seemingly lying about her having to re-do the year at college or whatever (seems like she just wants to avoid Stephen ever since she saw the pics of Macie on his laptop) I am actually all for Diana’s side and fully agree to her standing up for herself and kicking Stephen out of her life. And with the flash forwards it seems like she does, i just really hope it’s within the timeframe and not later, like DO IT NOW GIRL, GRT RID OF HIM!!!
I like that at least for me - they ve finally showed how ot really is in psychology. That its always both people going in circles manipulating each other. From victim to aggressor and back. And Lucy is almost as bad as Steven. In a way she behaves with others the way Steven behaves with her. So when he appears in her life she actually already is a narcissist as well. And the only way out of this - is to break the circle and stop this behaviour. Which is very hard to do on your own. Especially for narcissists. Even if they start to understand consequences of their manipulation and want to change. Yes, they both have their childhood trauma points - but at some point when you grow up, trauma can not be your excuse no longer.
Your analysis was spot on! I resonated so much with the show, even found myself having to take breaks in between. The flashbacks to Macy's death broke me 💔 She was extremely sweet and likable; she kind of reminded me of a younger sister or cousin. I suppose that's why Steven took advantage of her; she was a freshman, young, innocent, and naive. He spoke to her as if she were just a piece of meat and used that poor girl up until her death. 🥹 The scenes were hard to watch. And they just had to play Everything In Its Right Place🫠
Diana in s2 is a lot more interesting because of certain reactions or choices she makes. I think i was more sympathetic towards her in s1 till what happened in the last episode. I think Stephen and Diana are better suited to each other than him and Lucy. The only real problem is that Stephen is a toxic manipulator and a narcissist. It's hard to tell if he genuinely cares about anyone apart from himself. He twists everything. Hates his friends and girlfriends, only concerned about how they and any situation can serve him in the long run. And doesn't really want to see anyone else happy.
!!!!!!!!SPOILER DOWN BELOW!!!!!!!!! Personally I think Diana is not as bad as Stephen. I can’t remember which episode it was but Lucy had told Diana how bad Stephen was as a person and she told her what happened w the car accident…well when Stephen was in the shower that night, Diana literally went on Stephen computer and found pics of him and macy and SHE DELETED THE PICS!!! So i definitely don’t think she’s bad as Stephen, I think she’s becoming a bad person who’s a victim of Stephen. Any girl who gets with him ends up becoming horrible.
I tweeted my appreciation for the Radiohead needle drop and the showrunner responded and rewtweeted me. I was thrilled. But yes, I do really like this show and also like the book it's based on, even though the show is significantly different.
I haven't even watched the video yet but YES THIS SHOW IS SO GOOD. THAT STEPEHN IS AWFUL BUT HE IS SO SEXY. I love everything about this show, everyone lies or keeps their real feelings private. The core group of friends aren't really friends is like they're just stuck with each other
two things - one I agree it displays dv amazing but it can also be triggering to those that have experienced it so it should be watched with caution and two i'm excited to hear your opinion of Diana after you watch the new episodes! made it much more clear for me how I feel about her!
I wanted to like her because of how she looks after Pippa But, after she sees what's on Stephen's laptop and her reaction to it... she's just as bad as everyone else
@@marshallstannus it does a good job of making you have mixed emotions, the acting is superb and some scenes you just tear up at, it’s much different than Dahmer and surprisingly has a lot of well done comedy?? Ryan Murphy continues to slay
I don’t think he was ever like a good looking Sex God, so to say in the beginning- I think these girls get so infatuated with him, because of his bedroom skills. Kinda seems like they all use him for that part of his body. Just my take He uses them & they use him
Yeah 100% this, at the start i was like “what the hell he’s not even hot” and then they show a sex scene and it nearly convinces me he’s hot but then he opens his mouth and ruins it again 😂
I just finished watching this series and am still reeling, I just kept saying WTF the entire time, I mean like WTF did I actually watch. This series is alot to digest, all the characters in this series are crazy and awful to some degree and Steven and Lucy are the worst.
@@marshallstannus I'm going to say no lol. After watching your review I watched the trailers and seeing it was based on a best seller I got pretty excited. I find it fascinating to learn what's been changed and kept when adapting a bk to a movie/tv-show. But after I left my above comment I looked the bk up on goodreads. Reading the 1-3 star reviews, it sounds like this is a very straightforward bk about a on again off again toxic relationship and that's it. Some drug use and things like eating disorders and constant partying happens. So unless you enjoy duel 1st person POVs about a toxic relationship that goes on way too long it's probably not worth it. Maybe just to compare the bk vers to the actors' interpretation, that could be fun but again, probably not worth it.
@mmem4264 lol because of your first comment I got the audiobook, so will listen and then use in my season 1 big review Interesting thoughts you have from good reads, keen to see if I agree! Thanks sm for the comment!
Finished the book a couple days ago and loved it!! More realistic/ less soapy/ more in depth than the show. I actually wish the show would have stayed closer to the original source

4:10 I don’t think the relationship with Stephen causes Lucy to lash out. Lucy is just as bad as Stephen. For example the cold way she broke up with her high school boyfriend and the nasty way she speaks to her friends.
I don’t recall Lucy ever being particularly nasty to her friends unless she was being an idiot defending Stephen. I think she broke up with her boyfriend coldly because she didn’t really have feelings for him and her dad dying had something to do with it as well.
12:17 I mean I get Steven’s point of view because it wasn’t that his mom couldn’t pay for housing she was choosing to punish him because he helped his sister get into boarding school
Him reacting that way about HIS mother is fine. But projecting his feelings and dictating how Lucy should feel about her own mother is out of line. In fact, he hasn't been as horrible to his own mother if you go back and watch. But he was rude to Lucy's mother who he met for the first time.
Completely. Saying she "just couldn't afford it," I guarantee that was a calculated choice. She exposes herself shortly after by making a snide remark on knowing Steven had something to do with his father signing the documents for his sister's boarding school. If you've ever had a narcissistic parent, you're familiar with this kind of behavior. They will ALWAYS need to have their “get back" moment. Instead of providing you with ACTUAL support, they punish you by depriving you of your resources and keeping you in constant flight mode. It’s an endless cycle, until you have had enough and shut the door forever.
I’m so glad you made a video about this show. This show deserves more hype and more dissections and video essays/reviews/recaps this show is one of the best portrayals of covert narcissism and manipulation I’ve ever seen on screen.

I seriously think that this show has some of the most complex characters I’ve seen in awhile with so much depth.
