When I am dead, bury me In my beloved Ukraine, My tomb upon a grave mound high Amid the spreading plain, So that the fields, the boundless steppes, The Dnieper’s plunging shore My eyes could see, my ears could hear The mighty river roar.
When from Ukraine the Dnieper bears Into the deep blue sea The blood of foes … then will I leave These hills and fertile fields - I’ll leave them all and fly away To the abode of God, And then I’ll pray …. But till that day I nothing know of God.
Oh bury me, then rise ye up And break your heavy chains And water with the tyrants’ blood The freedom you have gained. And in the great new family, The family of the free, With softly spoken, kindly word Remember also me.

I am an American living in Odessa. I learned Russian because previously everyone in Odessa spoke Russian, but now I am learning Ukrainian because my friends and I all want to speak in Ukrainian now.

9:11 To me personally ,,Поховайте та вставайте" is the most magical part of this poem. It sounds so magnificent and vibrant and whenever I hear somebody recite Tara's "Заповіт" I wait for this specific line. Taras Shevchenko had a unique voice.
Btw, I like that poster in the background that reads:

I did not expect to feel this. Powerful
I just spoke to my 80-year old aunt, and she told me how much my grandma loved Shavchenko and had read all of his work. She said that basically my baba was in love with him. I love that I am able to read and learn his works today. What a special connection to our past.

I keep coming back to this video. It is great on many levels. I shared it with my 80 year old aunt, who is the last member of our family left born in Ukraine Poltova region. Sadly she has lost her native language. In part I learn for her and my grandmother, and those yet to come.

I majored in German and used to specialize in teaching English to German speakers. I've noticed a few Ukrainian words that look or sound like German ones and they help me recognize the occasional word when I watch news/videos/listen to music in Ukrainian. :)

Please forgive my ignorance.
I've only started trying to learn UA a little over a month ago. So I am still very very new to it. (I have yet to study the cases and tenses thoroughly)
I started with the Alphabet, and have expanded to a few small phrases from one of your other videos, and am now trying to expand some vocabulary so that I at least have some "material" to work with when I do jump into Cases and that.
Anyway, The reason I've decided to message you today is that I was listening to the song бом бом by Big Boss

when I decided to try and use Google Translate to get some insight into the nuances of how the languages compare on a word for word level.

I stopped when Google said that вікном on its own translates to Window,
While the line новий рік за вікном as a whole translates to "The new year is just around the corner"
With вікном being "Corner". Or I assume.
Is it common for words in UA to change their meaning or have multiple meanings depending on Context?
