- Work is under way to expand Romania's Mihail Kogalniceanu Air Base into one of the largest NATO bases in Europe. The facility is located about 400 kilometers from Russian-occupied Crimea and 100 kilometers from Romania's border with Ukraine. The reconstruction is expected to continue until 2042.

But that's where the similarities end.

When this is all over, perhaps Ukraine too will have a NATO air base somewhere west of Kyiv. Ukrainians are resourceful fighters. They will make fantastic allies and trading partners in the future.

See the Budapest Memorandumv (1994) to which Russia was a signatory and in which Russia promised not to use military or economic force against Ukraine. Seems Russian promises are worth less than a festering bowl of dog snot. Also seems the rest of the former Eastern Bloc thought the same way too, aside from one or two former CCCP apparatchiks who found positions of power.

Romania has been spending 2% on defense since 2015.
Mostly on salaries and pensions in the defence sector. The actual investment in new weapons and technology is a lot smaller.

Good to hear about Romania because you don't really hear to much about what Romania contribution is to NATO besides taking in Ukraine refugees.
You hear about it, but you need to "dig" a little bit deeper. We are his neighbours and we are cautious, nothing more! :)
Romania has never "advertised" it's help for Ukraine for strategic reasons. However, if you can read between the lines, RO has helped Ukraine tremendously from day one and continues to do so.
Well OPSEC seems to be working fine, and given that we are somewhat in charge of the hush hush part of intelligence around the area, we're glad you noticed :))

It´s a great place for an airbase just 100kms/60mi from the Ukrainian border.
Constanta airport only has very limited passenger flights (Turkish Airlines to IST and Wizzair to London LTN).
So, as room for expansion is availlable and low population density immediately around the airport this all makes sense having a NATO-airbase right at the black sea and close to Ukraine.
... and soldiers from the base can enjoy some beach time during off-time.

While some countries are apprehensive about hosting military bases, it's pretty beneficial for the Eastern EU countries. Adds security and it's a benefit to their economy.

Yes, it is probably true, 48% feel in that way. I will try an explanation for this. This 48% when communism was over they were around 30 years old, strong men and women with all life in front of them. Very few, smart and lucky, emigrated to vest Europa but a large part of them stay home and try to survive with zero help, zero economy and communist mentality and propaganda hanging heavily on their shoulders. Of course they failed and Romania from 1990 to 2010 was a disaster. Today these 48% are retirees and live with 250 euros per month and they missed the train. But the younger generation are completely different people and this country for the first time in his history begins to develop in the right and correct way.

In this times, I wonder why they are not learning from huthis and iranians to dig and put all these things underground , cause this way are very vulnerable to overwhelming AD with cheap drones and missiles. NATO standards are obsolete as Ukraine war has shown. I guess now combined arm tactics has to involve drones and antidrone capabilities and layered defense on top of a dispersed assets structure, underground mostly but also disguised and decoyed if above ground. It is just pure arrogance to build bases like these in 2024

Not only has Russia demonstrated in Ukraine how weak its military actually is but Putin has completely misjudged this whole thing and he has woken a sleeping giant. His bravado and bully language carries little weight in the face of NATO forces that could wipe his forces from the map.
