I felt your pain when your had to disassemble and reassemble so many times after troubleshooting some electrical issues on my old Suzuki swift sport 😭 good to see you learn from it though! Sometimes a lesson is better taught when you learn for yourself, I reckon.
Dude - Magnificent job, iam impressed seeing your determination. One thing I must say - Never, ever put filler/putty on bare steel. It wil rust quickly because fillers are higroscopic and you trapped moisture inside. It will react with steel, sou you must cut fillers off to avoid rusting. You should spray epoxy primer directly on steel, then filler/putty and next epoxy primer again. Then use acrylic primer and paint. Keep going, Iam not a fan of BMW but admire your work.

This is the moment we've all been waiting for. So satisfying to hear that engine cranking up and starting for the first time in a long time. Full engine/engine bay restored, she's practically brand new 😍😍👌👌🤜👍👏👏
Biggest takeaway from this episode is recognizing that when you take stuff apart, label it. Even if he got a new loom, might have helped avoid the guess work. Love the episode. I wanna do a project just like this when I get the chance. You're a real inspiration, and probably the best youtuber out there showing the restoration process
Dude, you're so responsive in the comments, and you always take the suggestions so well. Seriously, I haven't seen such great restoration vids AND as active of a creator as you. I'm just glad I fell in love with the E30 in a time when someone like you showed that it was possible to bring them back to life
I’ve wanted to own a VW Golf since I was 16 years old and now I do. I’ve also wanted to own a E30 Touring but in that wonderful dark blue colour. I’d still like to own one at some point. They have such wonderful character. This epic project you embarked on deserves every success!
Sooo good. Way to go! I don't mean to sound patronizing when I say this but I'm super proud of you. I know that feeling of when it FINALLY starts. Best wishes.
Great job! It takes a lot of persistence, stamina, and patience to do these types of tasks, along with some kind of stress management strategy for those times when those three traits are really put to the test. Great to see you continuing to have success, and thanks for your hard work and focus-it’s a great example for the rest of us.
I’ve watched a few of your earlier RestoreIT videos but the E30 restoration content has become addictive... what with having recently purchased one myself. The content you create is top quality, no BS and informative... IMO your humility, patience and acknowledgement that things do go wrong shows great character and makes your videos watchable. Keep the great work up and all the best with the 325i restoration. 👍🏽
It’s refreshing to see the trials and tribulations, usually on videos this is hidden but that’s what I enjoy the most. I’d say I’m a competent home mechanic but I always encounter problems, sometimes even on simple jobs like changing a set of discs and pads! Bravo and lovely work my friend!
Huge kudos to you for having the guts to try again until you nail it. I've seen so many projects being abandoned due to frustration for years and years. I bet it was the most satisfying feeling ever, to be able to hear that engine after all the work you put into every part, bolt and nut of the car. Have a nice trip!
Thank you for including your struggles. Too many UA-camrs only show the good parts and not the bad. Also there is a lot of bad info on UA-cam that you kind of addressed here. For instance I am a proud owner of a late model manual swap but I have an early model ...
Great video @Restore It. I always love watching E30 videos and yours are my favorite because of the ability to mechanically follow along with what you're doing. Have a safe move and keep it going strong, brother!

Ohhh maaaan it was so so satisfying to hear it start after so long! I had to replay that bit a couple of times, knowing you put so much love and effort onto your E30!
Got the notification this time bud. Loving the regular uploads. 👍 Also don't get down about removing the engine again, im an experience mechanic and I've done mistakes like this before. Live and learn the hard way sometimes 😊
Hooray! I once couldn't start an Alfasud engine no matter what I tried - turns out I had to turn the distributor rotor shaft 180 degrees! Glad you found the issue.
When I Did by e30 swap I had a similar issue... all I did was buy another engine loom that matches the face lift ecu and ran one wire to the glove box for all the dash and instruments gauges. Then boom started on the first key turn .
Very commendable to do the troubleshooting, it purrs like a kitten now! I've had to do some troubleshooting myself on my Mk3 Golf, misfiring issues and all that. Turned out coil was bad (got zapped when I wanted to touch it, great way to test ha) and even after replacing that, it went from misfires in wet weather to constantly running on 3. Popped the spark plug wires one by one and found the one that was broken. Such a great feeling.

I did a motronic 1.3 conversion on my e28 this summer. So I could ditch the gearbox sensors and all that old stuff. It's pretty easy actually. You only need a few wires to make it start. Power to dme, both from batterie AND ignition to wake up the ecu, power to coil, power to starter (one wire is enough the other is to unload the circuit), grounds etc. Turn the key to the on position, you should hear the relays click and the air vane buzz. If not you have a problem already (mine had a faulty dme relay which was too resistant, only had 2 volts out), changed it, then had spark but no start, my 6 injectors were gummed up, changed those and it started immediately. The motronic 1.3 is the better platform and more modern, stick to this one, as it's also the one from the car. The engine is the same, it's just the sensors that are related to which generation of dme and wiring you want.

I know your pain with that flywheel. My Volvo 940 had a trigger on the flywheel and I had to take the transmission out TWICE to get it aligned properly. The first time I did it the crank pulley tdc mark was incorrect, and the second time I used a guide for an older car and so it was still wrong. Third time I finally got it
The wiring side of engine work can be the most frustrating... The connectors on my e30's original harness are beginning to crumble. Glad you got this sorted 👍 Thank You for the video!
Where abouts in uk you be coming,,,i know that feeling when you got it started.... took me a week to find out it was a cable under steering that got loose .....
Wow, I am so sorry to see all this trouble that you went through. Although that’s an awesome amount of experience you are getting out of it. We had the same problem on our e30 when we removed the wiring in the engine bay. If we learnt something out of it, was that tagging is your best friend on these old cars. Good job though!!!
That red engine tilter (my dad has an orange one just like it) is so much less useful than strong ratchet straps on four corners of the engine, especially in a fwd style awd vehicle, I used dollar store ones instead and just doubled them up to slack one off (strap second strap across first and tighten to seat first, then release and tighten to less than the one holding the drivetrain and release that one, the distance between the two you can have is determined by how far it can move suddenly, alternatively you can pull the release on just the handle and open it not all the way to the release point, then hold tension on the handle and release the latch side to transfer the weight to the handle, keep in mind there is a pinch chance here as the handle will want to force itself closed where your fingers are holding the latch, use appropriate precautions) where the engine tilter wanted to move either two directions at once if mounted diagonally, or it relied on balance to tilt across from it’s axis, this was where I first started using ratchet straps in this context and later with just a chain to hold the weight, finally evolving to trusting the straps entirely, works good with new straps and less so with rusted ones that were holding everything over the winter...
Overcoming all of those problems says a lot about you, you are a winner, well done.
I was going to get a touring but it sold, this one is the best I’ve seen
Cheers Dillan!

I just hope, now that you've figured out where all the plugs go, that you label the wire loom!!
Great idea! I will now :D
@@RestoreIt No need for that: You gonna know that particular model's loom-quirks by heart for good I reckon 😂
