Keep in mind that if you play it in real hardware, the Kraftwerk sample might get a bit out of tune.
Also this is not the complete song. In fact, this is actually an old project that I never finished (probably never will).
The fact that ContentID recognized it as a real deal speaks volumes, good job
I remade a song that didn’t have an official instrumental. Same thing. I disputed the claim and won because they couldn’t find an official instrumental anywhere. It feels honestly pleasing to know you played the UA-cam AI good enough.
If the rhythm and melody fits fingerprint, it will get "recognized". It's not hard to trigger the association with the original, if it sounds like MIDI passed trough ancient sounds chips.
-zomg teh rei-
indeed, it tells you how cheap the song was actually made.
@@HangoverTelevision???
Do you realise what the equipment used to make Blue Monday would have cost in 1982?
If anyone ever criticises the Mega Drive sound hardware again, I’m sending them here.
Hell just have them listen to the Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle soundtrack
@@artstrutzenberg7197 😄 or Ristar, Rocket Knight Adventures, Ecco II…
try MelonadeM - all good times. even better one
it’s a bit shrill for my taste
@@artstrutzenberg7197 there's so many good ones, like Ristar, Rocket Knight Adventures, Ecco 2, Puggsy, most Disney games 😊
The Genesis cover is so good that ContentID recognized it as the real deal.
it's actually by New Order, not Genesis ☝🤓
@@MyScorpion42 Erm, akschually, I was referring to the Sega Genesis a.k.a Mega Drive 👆🤓
@@pabblo1 She drive on my mega til I genesis
This is phenomenal. So many sounds I never expected to hear out of the Genesis sound chips. Even the choir pad and guitar are really convincing
well the choir is just a digital sample so that shouldn't be surprising
2:43 is still the hypest shit even with this sound chip. Good work!
Bernard Sumner is represented by two channels. Peter Hook is represented by one. Barney keeps giving Hooky the shaft.
It's always amazing just how good people are with FM synthesis these days. There was so much headroom on the technology.
The tools to get there just didn't exist back then. I programmed commercial games in that era and you pretty much typed numbers and prayed the 2612 sounded like something. (Yamaha's actual synths weren't any better, which is why every 80s song had DX-7 presets but no programmed sounds). Modern VSTs like Plogue's chipSynth MD have a much better interface for creating sounds.
@@ischmidt I think the theory is: if you do some Fourier analysis of a real instrument and happen to be a living god of trigonometric identities you can just calculate what the multiplier needs to be.
I must say I was surprised how faithful this sounds. This is one of the most outstanding sound demos I've ever heard on Mega Drive hardware. Absolutely incredible! I did not think that the sound chip in the Mega Drive would be able to pull this off! And I owned a Mega Drive back in the day!
Mighty impressive stuff. The little YM2612 that could.
YM2612 + SN76489 actually. The Genesis has 10 sound channels and vast sound capabilities. It can do BOTH FM & PSG.
@@KTJohnsonkidThunder well yes, but that doesn’t really roll of the tongue quite as well.
This is real impressive. The best thing SEGA give to us wasn't the Genesis, but the Yamaha DX7 inside it.
Did it have 6 operators?
Well it's not actually a DX7 equivalent as that one can produce much richer sounds with little effort. Still, the Genesis sound chip (both of YM origin of course) can do an impressive number of sounds that the DX7 is famous for as well. And probably for a much lower price in comparison.
And yet people complain the genesis sounds terrible. Its all all a matter of opinion and the talent of the composer.
@@timvangenechten5258 True. Thogh you'd think that by now a growing number of people would know better as we now have all those videos of great MD music from its active era and, often even better, from recent homebrew and aftermarket sources. I will have to check on that though.
if only it had a Yamaha FZR400 inside
I love how you were able to get background voice chorus chant to sound so similar. 👍
it's just audio imported, it couldn't not sound similar
It reminds me when I was young, I had Blue Monday in a music program on the Amiga. I loved it.
I had the MOD without instruments in my copy of Soundblaster.
@@turrican4d599 Ahah, on Soundblaster pro? The days of my 486dx2 66Mhz, seem so long ago too :) 👍
@@turrican4d599 On Sounblaster 1.5 or pro? I remember having one on my 484DX66Mhz, that was a long time ago now.
Two of my most favourite of things, SEGA and New Order. Totally awesome composition and use of the hardware. It sounds precisely like the original in so many areas. Liked and subscribed. More please!
Really? 2 of your most favourite things? Of all the trillions things in the world? 😅
@@umageddon imagine having tastes for games and music
After the perfect chorus I wouldn' t be surprised if I start hearing lyrics. This was amazing!
Excelent cover! High attention to detail!
You make me wanna do covers now!
A motivator, you are!
Edit: This video finally got the recodnition it deserves, when he posed this he had like 47 subs now he's got 500.
those are the best non sampled drums i heard come out of the genesis, unless that's a sample snare being played on the noise channel.
definitely, can't stress that enough! now this should encourage others to try harder. ;)
This is a really well done composition!
Sounds like it wouldn't be too out of place in an Amiga game.
An Amiga version would have panpipes instead of choir ;)
@@theinternetsmrakAmiga has 4 sound channels, and it can be condensed. The Super NES has 8 sound channels and it is ADPCM.
@@KTJohnsonkidThunder And if my mother had wheels she'd be a wagon.
Both amiga and snes would just use samples almost to a perfect reproduction but not using midi at all
Hmm I wonder why.
This could've been just cool, but holey moley, DAMN!! Kudos, that's incredible!
Amazing attention to detail. The chunky bass is just right hehe
Officially added to my Awesome Chiptunes playlist
Nice Sega Genesis cover of the song, and nice use of the SN7 pulse bass as well, and how do you make those impressive realistic sounding FM drums?😄🤩😎👌
SN7 pulse deserves more use!
As for the FM drums, probably SSG-EG is what really makes the difference. The Pitch slide down effect helps a bit too, as it gives the percussion a bit of an extra punch. SN7 noise it's just there to smooth out the sound.
Oh so you use those as punctuation always not just on siiva
Was just thinking of the same question. I've not seen that much of realistic sounding synthesized drums usage as of yet and this one is one excellent example! Not to mention many of the other sounds in here as well. It also shows here that everything is put together in a way so that in conjuction it sounds as closely to the original studio recording as possible. I think I even listened to a "YM2612 remix" titled cover of this song by another homebrew musician before and obviously was not nearly as impressed.
this is so good. the brass horns sound very close to the original and the stereo effect gives it a nice depth
How in the hell did you do this... i'm good at fm synthesis but you nailed the sounds, this would take me months of tuning. Real masterpiece.
Well, just to give an idea, when I started working on this, Furnace Tracker wasn't even a thing.
Huge fan of the song and NO. And your cover is seriously mind-blowing!
That choir pad! 😳
The crazy thing is that the YM2612.is kind of like an emaciated Yamaha DX7. This is nuts Lol
This is beautiful and I'm glad it exists!
mind blown how sick this sounds
those fm drums are crazy
Bizarre Love Triangle next? Surely you've got a few more years to spare?!
Very impressive.
I was hoping that the DAC channel would blurt out a "how, do I feel" voice line from the original song.
FM2 putting in work. Just love that wave.
This is absolutely spot on with the original. Any chance of making anyone of the Last Njnja tunes? I would love to hear the Wildernes loading tune.
Not finishing things is my favorite thing to do. Well done!
This is amazing
This deserves sooooo many more views! Amazing!
gonna send this to my mother
Woah the perfect cymbals at 0:45 - that's not a sample, you synthed that!
this is nice, interesting use of expanded ch-3
This is brilliant 💯
Bloody impressive work!
dang yo! this is amazing
Surprises every minute. Nice work
Omg two of my favorite things combined ❤
I love this.
the chills going through my brain tells me this is good
Outstanding! Thank you!
Nice cover! You earned a sub.
Oh sweet 16 Bit Lord this is beautiful - a thousand thanks!
This is legit relaxin' & unique it's good to discover that song. 💜👌
This cover peaks
The visuals are great as well, thank you
Pfft, no lyrics?
Kidding! Awesome work ❤️
I love it -- sounds amazing
This is so great, I only wish that the DAC was used to have the vocals in megadrive level of speech sample instead of having it as a synth melody.
This is impressive, great sounds and a good balance to the overall track. Kudos.
Incredibly well done!
I was never a fan of the YM series of chips, but this is an astoundingly good cover. Really masterful work, congrats on really hitting it out of the ballpark...! :) That's a well spent 6 mins listening, I must say.
de lo mejor que pude haberme encontrado, sublime uso de sonidos
Excellent job 💗
Very well done 👍😊
Tell me how does it feel to defeat Sonic 2?
This the type of music to be in an EmpLemon video
Really good 👍🏼
amazingly epic
SEGA does what Nintendon't.
Impossible not to hear the entire track!
Dude this is so good
Cool! Really well made.
That FM kick is amazing!

" while we walked down to the beach "
Sounds interesting xD
Wasn’t there a bootleg game which played this song
Plenty. It was one of the mainstays of the demo scene as far as covers go, and plenty of the music from them has ended up in games.
My phone passively detected it as the real song
Dude, tell the truth, did you sample "Uranium" by Craftwerk for the signature chorus part? I'd be shocked of the Genesis could do that. It sounds super close.
The Genesis has a digital sample channel. So, since the original song had that Kraftwerk sample, it was fine to use for this, so long as it was crushed down enough and only one sample was being played at once.
@@TheGerkuman Fair enough.
My favourite tune on my favourite console (well, Megadrive that is, not Genesis).
Genesis' sound chips are really good, but unfortunately they were so misused, since there is a lot of games with poor and muffled sound quality, specially with games available for other consoles. Yuzo Koshiro was one of the composers that made a really good use of this Yamaha chips.
The drums sound sampled, but they can't be cos you're using the single DAC channel for the choir, right?
cool
Did you use GenMDM?
How does it feel to have blast processing?
Sega Genesis has never sounded better
Yesss hahaha YESSSSS
😍👏🏼
Nice
♥♥♥
Sega Mega Drive/Genesis Power ❤ i love this song
How does it feel?
Nice gj
Who else started to sing the lyrics?
shows you dont need many channels to make bangin music - fuck yeah!
