Nice demonstration; just bought the ICOM 92AD, "amazing piece of technology" on top of that I am new to the Ham Radio situation and learning the ropes.

TNX for the flick. Good info. Only drawback ... next time set your backlit display to continuous on, that way we don't have to watch a blank nothing part of the time. All in all --U dun good. 73

When convenient, could you have a video on installing an external antenna on the ID51A?
I reside in a condo which has a strict ban on antennas, so it would be portable, if possible.
(ie. What hookups are needed, what type of antenna to use etc).
    Thx 73

just pick up a dual band magnet mount mobile antenna, and find a small piece of sheet metal steel to stick it to, it will work...MFJenterprises has a huge selection of them... The radio has SMA-female, so you want an SMA-male antenna adapter.. or an antenna with BNC will work just buy a SMA-F to BNC adapter..

Check out the N9TAX antenna. I purchased two dual banders and they work well indoors or out! 73s KD9JEO

Hi HMC, really like listening to your vids you present them in a very clear and down to earth way.Can I make a request if possible for you to make a vid about loft antenna and getting out on CB without a repeater using an indoor aerial? I worry that it could fry my brain, lol, is there a risk? and does the antenna have to be outside?. It is difficult for people in apartments to get long distance, etc ...Lots of vids can't explain this properly and they either miss major info or use too much tech jargon. Can you make it idiot proof please.S.

I'm new to this and I am having a hard time grasping some of the terminology. What exactly is a "reflector" and what does it do? Is it the same as a repeater? If so, why do people use different terminology for the same thing?

Well a reflector is what everyone links to... 4 or 5 repeaters can be tethered to a reflector instead of linking one repeater to another.... so your local dstar repeater would operate as a repeater, or yoy can link to reflector 007c which is where we link our machine up to on Tuesdays 830pm EST so others can join the net by linking their repeater to that reflector.. hope this helps

is there a limit to how big the outside antenna can be? like say 13ft?

You would have to figure out the RF loss of your coax, but running on high power would be similar to running a base unit on low power. Shouldn't have too much loss and it should work fine. 13' is nothing to worry about.

The ID-51 is relatively immune to intermod. I'm running a Diamond X200A through 50 feet of LMR-400 UltraFlex and have no issues. I get excellent signal reports, and people are often shocked that I'm transmitting on 5 Watts. I often hear, "You sound like you are right next to the repeater." I say go for the huge antenna!

Well i guess you guys should get a kickback from Icom cause you just sold another one...

They sold me on them too. Just got it about a month ago and recently got the openspot by sharkRF. Trying to figure it all out, but it's coming together. Good luck and happy hamming.

very cool features but my $39 Ballenger sounds better. There is no excuse for vibrating speakers.
