Practice time! Learning how to shade with pencil

- Sketch with me! I think I've succeeded at making shading practice more fun by using interesting looking objects. We're warming up with an apple. After that comes a shiny vase, then a wooden candle stick (with candle), and as desert: a one eyed monster. Enjoy!
My name is Heleen and I want to get good at sketching. To get real good, I think I need to understand the basics of shading, form and perspective. Today we are going to focus on the shadows that appear when playing around with a lamp.💡
In this video you will get to see what drawing practice can look like for real. The pencils I'm mainly using are 4B and 8B graphite pencils. The sketch pad is a no-brand from the dollar store. If you have a common pencil and some printer paper, you are good to go!
If you've been sketching along, I'd love to see what you have made. You can share your sketches with me on Instagram @thecommonpencil or send an e-mail to heleen@commonpencil.com.

Thank you for watching! 😊
what a great perspective
I liked it so much 0:01
it changed how to look to the world
Love the little monster guy! I think the opposite of highlights are called "lowlights", but I could be wrong..
Which object was your favorite? Mine was definitely number four. 🥰 Thank you for watching!
Hey Heleen!
2:30 - > I suppose this video has been a success then ! :)
Thank you for this cosy time!
You just made my day. So happy to hear that! :D
I think the darkest part of the shadow is called an occlusion shadow.
Looks like you're right! Searching for 'occlusion shadow' brought me to a whole world of shading theory. Thanks!
No problem, I think Proko or James Gurney have UA-cam videos about it. Brilliant video, by the way. I love following you on your artistic journey.
@ Thank you, I'm very happy you like it 😊
