Everything about this episode to me was superb. I don't think Jake would ever quit being a cop, because I think they wanna use him to show that maybe there's still a little hope within the force and within law enforcement as a whole but I would've liked to see him quit and become Rosa's partner, that might have even reinforced the prevalence of the corruption more so, if someone whose only dream has been to protect and serve takes a step back. But whichever way they go with it at the end of the day, I'll be here for all of it
Especially with the Mac storyline from last episode, I’m wondering if he’ll quit to become a stay at home dad (or take on a different job where he can be more involved with Mac)
Holt told Terry a very similar thing when he was racially profiled and wanted to file a complaint. Terry’s job application was denied. She would likely pay with her career. It’s a travesty that good cops are punished for doing the right thing.
that's it. it's not that there are no "good" cops or acab, it's being a rat/snitch most likely causes you to lose (promotion/job/pension) while somehow being corrupt or violent doesn't
It's true. An officer who refused to shoot a Black man who was clearly going through a mental health crisis was blackballed and harassed so badly he was forced to quit. The thing you have to keep in mind is that when we talk about "good cops" and the PDs talk about "good cops", we're not talking about the same cops. This corruption continues because it's what defines "good cops" in the PD.
I remember watching this scene and smiling like hell, waiting for the glorious payoff of when they’d walk out of the office and Rosa would reveal she made a copy of the footage and was recording the whole conversation, and they’d go to the press, and justice would be served. Then… that doesn’t happen. The system doesn’t change, it protects itself at the cost of the people it claims to serve.
Well that's Real life, it's probably happening now, it will be Idealistic if the System changed because the way the world is right, this displays the sad truth Americans live in.
honestly kinda crazy that Rosa didnt make a copy. She wasn't at all surprised about the footage getting deleted and she never trusted the female captain. Just putting it online could've gotten something done, but I suppose that could've led to retaliation against her client
One thing I like about this is that they don't strawman the captain here, they kinda steelman her. Everything she says is true, and yet she still did the wrong thing.
I loved this as well... Like, yeah, it's terrible to say, but from my perspective, much like Jake, she was firmly still one of "the good ones", solely on the fact that she sincerly condemn those actions. But that was the point, even without being utterly corrupted and morally bankrupt, a cop is still a pig just by being part of an oppressive system that only serve to defend the offenders.
Yeah. She wasn’t actually one of the good ones. Sure she wouldn’t do what that officer did. Maybe. But she was lazy and jaded. She should have reported them and started the process because that’s the right thing to do 🤷🏽♀️
I get the whole: do the right thing, thing, but the entire scene was about how she specifically could not do that because she couldn't actually get them fired.
@@sammiepittman3130 She was neither tired nor lazy. She explained how the doing the good thing would not work, and would result her losing her office. She's one of the good ones, which should make you realize that the organization is fundamentally corrupt. She's trying to be a positive change, and knows she can't stick her neck out too far.
What I appreciate most about this episode is how it showed that a “good” cop is of help to no-one because they’re still working for a fundamentally f’ed up system.
I love the fact that they actually explain the technicalities and complications with handling issues within the police force, instead of just slapping racism down and that's why no one does anything about it. Situations like these are not easy to solve.
There needs to be a compilation of Jake just being the audience. “Oh no, your a villain!” and Jake’s face when Holt is flirting with the judge should both be on it.
I really like how, as with every other social issue presented on the show, there was really no solution for the main conflict since both the audience and the characters learned that this issue is way too fucking complicated for it to be solved easily. Always reminded me that Brooklyn 99 was a step ahead of other sitcoms or even other TV shows going to *that* territory. Kudos to the writers, director, actors, and everyone else who made it feel real in a silly cops show.
Brooklyn 99 is a better cop-show than something like "Purse-snatcher throws himself off of a tall building to break his legs and frame an honest detective for Police-Brutality after said detective already threatened to throw him off of a tall building"-Blue Bloods.

That's actually a relatively accurate representation of any organisation. But I'm surprised she wasn't enraged and just told them to get the hell out of there or sneakily delete the footage....but I guess it all for the show
I would justify it as that the character actually believes her own BS about being "one of the good ones" and if she'd done the things you listed it would be harder for her to lie to herself.
"Yep I heard it Rosa you can stop staring daggers at me let's just leave" the TONE he realizes not only that she said exactly what he said but he realizes WHERE he learned that from and that it's a lie and they should just leave lol
I like how corrupt here is a bit of your normal corruption, but mostly it's "insane bureaucracy, rules, and financial costs" that make you feel like it's pointless to even try.
What I don't get is why Rosa didn't make a copy before they gave the proof to that corrupt captain.. I mean, she quit being a cop for a reason, she's smart, it's was obvious that's what she'll do.. I guess the whole point was that Jake will understand that the police is corrupt and not really get justice to that woman who was arrested so they didn't really develop the storyline further, but still, it's weird that this is how they chose to end this.
I think was the point was “what’s the point”. What would she do with it after it was laid out how drawn out it would’ve been. Even if it got out there nothing would happen, and it happens in real life too.
@@HistoryMonarch1999 She could have given the footage to the woman who hired her and that woman could do with it whatever she thought would benefit her, after all, that's why she hired Rosa, to help her. That's lazy writing.
i saw a tweet that was like b99 should just come back as a paper selling company for their final season during the height of the protests last year, gotta be honest not sure how they can tackle issues in a real way when there are no real answers (at least ones that probably wont land for b99 humor)
That footage gets out O'Sullivan knows he is the only who has it so either someone hacked into his computer or broke into his office to physically get it she gets caught and sent to prison (again)
She is right that she would have been forced out while the officers would have probably gotten a settlement check and an apology. There are no actual "good ones" in this context because they would have never made it even close to Captain.
@@elliotwilson7050 in the first ever episode after Jake asked Holt why it took him so long to have his own command he said he was gay and he became captain now because the NYPD wanted to show off that they have a gay black high ranking officer after times have changed. Djdjdjd have some people on these comments ever watched this show?????? They have ALWAYS talked about corruption within cops????? Like… there’s multiple storylines amongst the seasons and even small jokes throughout the whole series about it. And they have tackled political issues several times before. Only difference was that they used to be “thats horrible thank god we are good” and now the characters are being more retrospective on the paper they played on the big picture. B99 has ALWAYS been left leaning in its politics and themes. I get Republicans disliking it but people saying “i used to love the show and now..” did you????? Because these type of storylines are not new at all to the show. So you either watched a couple episodes per season or are just a troll that doesn’t watch the show. The target audience for this show has always been aware of this issues and has talked about this before. It would have been tone deaf and nonsensical for the show NOT to have a storyline written like this post 2020, bc they always have been about this message.
It's always been left-leaning of a show, correct, however they never got very political, I'm not even a Republican, both parties disgust me, but this show used to be somewhat entertaining and now it is just boring tbh
@@polskamapping6116 nah. They always had more than one plotline about politics, not every episode but more than one ep per season. Same here. You can’t expect to have a political explosion in 2020 and then have the show pretend it didn’t happen. Not all the episodes will deal with that, but with the pilot beint the aftermath of 2020 after jake and amy’s parental leave, they HAD to focus on it on the pilot. Otherwise it would have been tone dead considering the stance the show has always taken and that the premise of it is about the exact political issue that exploded
Exactly! I have been one of the OG watchers of the show way back since 2014, I introduced this show to most of my friends. But B 99 is a lot of political messages and very less humor now. In the earlier seasons, the humor was based on character development, since season 6 maybe because they are on NBC, I don't know exactly why but the show is just boring, not funny.
Right?? How do you watch A COP SHOW and then not expect it to talk about real-life political issue involving COPS? If you don't want your shows to get "too political", then go watch fucking barney or something
I actually get a more neutral take from this. The captain here isn’t a bad person. She isn’t even really a villain. She’s a villain in Jake’s eyes because he expects the system to work, to get rid of the bad guys. She didn’t fully bury it immediately, she gave them the benefit of explaining to them why this wouldn’t work. She’s desensitised, clearly, with her whole “one of the good ones” shit. But I can see the conflict. Its hard to stomach not being able to do much in the face of shitty corrupt cops but simultaneously, there is an element of “well if I quit, that’s one more gap that can be filled by a trigger happy lunatic. Is it better to tolerate fucked up things if you’re there to potentially stop them getting worse? And how do you stop yourself from getting so desensitised, you don’t even fight for anything anymore?
@@Quirozom From a country where police budgets have been repeatedly cut for decades even as the population increases, cutting police funding without any plan for replacement services doesn't produce great results, you have tired, overstretched officers who grow apathetic about anything short of a murder if there isn't public or political pressure behind it. Our police also aren't generally armed with lethal weaponry like handguns so even with a larger force we had lesser, though not non-existent, issues with police brutality but perhaps at the frictional level (i.e. the level that should be the expected minimum when at an optimum with other measures of crime prevention). Mob rule/community enforcement is not an efficient or reliable way to police crime that's why vigilantism is outlawed in most developed countries. There is no such thing as „reverse racism“. Racism is the differential application of any given rule set on the basis of phenotype. Or in less words, its discrimination, as in: a difference in treatment, on the basis of race. Racism is racism. I find it really fascinating that american culture seems to struggle with this concept so much
A very good explanation of institutional racism. Not all the individual actors are necessarily racist, but the institution as a whole marginalize and persecute minorities with machine like efficiency and devours anyone who gets in it's way.

@@theseus4729 it's so not necessary, it's supposed to be satire and a comedy show but if you take up George Floyd and make him a hero after everything he's done it's just wrong
Probably ome of the most important scenes in the whole series. Not for the plot, but as a media piece. It doesn't end with some optimism based high note. Rather, it's all about making sure it uses itself as a platform to inform watchers how screwed up the situation is. We can point fingers to the immediate "culprits", but simply put, the system itself is nothing short of a sham.
To be fair, it does fall into tropes that are typical to police propaganda. It's probably the best, or one of the best, police shows I know of, because it's self-aware and careful about a lot of things, especially now, but it has made light of police violence (ironically, Rosa had a problem with this in the past; there was an episode where she was laughing about an LRAD specifically due to its potential to hurt someone) and fallen into the trope of making HR seem tedious and annoying. And just in general, if a show depicts the police violating people's right to privacy, etc. and makes the viewer think "Good, they're close to catching the bad guy!", that's something one should be wary of. It's a fun show, and I enjoy watching it, but it's also good to be conscious of its flaws.

@@jasonpatterson8091 Nearly every comedy show covers serious things like this from time to time. "The fresh prince", family matters, Big Bang theory, Everybody hates Chris, Blackish. These are all comedies that do have episodes that are about real world problems (no just police issues). I feel that Brooklyn 99 did it very well and it seems that several cops even agree with this clip.
It took Jake 8 years (seasons) to realize the NYPD was corrupt, ignoring all the times he and the 99 did bad, unorthodox, and even sometimes illegal stuff, and got away with it and/or suffered little to no consequences. Like there's the episode where they make a big deal about Terry being racially profiled even though Jake has done exactly that on at least 2 different occasions. And only got a stern talking to by Holt.
A perfect explanation for ACAB. Everyone here knows what happened is wrong, but all feel the need to protect themselves against the system and so become complicit.
This was kind of great. The captain actually explains why it's difficult to hold police officers accountable for bad behavior. They're discussing the actual institutional forces at work in these situations, not obscure ideas about race and the history of the United States. In my experience, that's a much more effective way of getting people on the right side of this issue.
And the difficult thing is, many of those policies exist for good reason. It’s just that bad people have learned how to make good policies work for them and people like them.
I initially didn’t like how this plot point got dropped and I thought they’d solve it. But then I realise this based on real life problem hasn’t exactly met it’s end either, so how could the fiction writers end it
I actually quite enjoyed this episode once the first 5 or so minutes had happened I suppose you need them for people watching in future but it just felt like "Oh here's real life things that everyone know's happened" and just felt idk, a little out of place? The story itself was well done and pretty needed considering everything, the first few minutes just seemed very clunky I guess
i really like the episode and it did feel a little weird. after all many people watch tv to escape the reality of the world but 100% the show had to talk about it. im glad they did and that not every episode is like this one
I like the idea, i thought on paper it was a good plot and character development, also dealing with the issues in one show was a good idea... But it just wasnt a funny episode... Which i wouldnt have minded if they were purposely doing a serious episode, but they were clearly trying to deliver jokes. For me the comedy side was flat, which in comparison the Jeffords racism episode managed to do really well. I did laugh at the oh no youre a villain though.
She didn't "feel a lot of rage at him" per se, but she's frustrated that jake, for almost the entirety of the episode, doesn't realize how big of an issue they're dealing with. This case meant a lot to rosa as a POC witnessing firsthand the injustices that her community had to go through, and jake simply made it all about himself and trying to prove rosa wrong.
Not rage, but frustration I can see why, because Jake tries way too hard to prove himself good ( and as the whole episode went for ' I am the good ones' or 'I am not like it'.... You might have seen comments like these whenever people talk about police now) and its sad because some people try to make it all about themselves and it diverts from the main topic, the shame trait of his was then expressed further in second ep where he tried a lot hard to get Holt and Kevin together despite their wishes
Jake sees the police how society generally regards them. Good, honest officers that we can rely on to do the right thing. Rosa tried to explain to him, no that’s not always the case. He wouldn’t listen and insisted that the police would do the right thing. They didn’t. She’s not angry at him I don’t thing, she’s hurt and she’s frustrated and she’s furious AT the system because she’s been let down again. It’s very much I told you so, why didn’t you just listen to me so that we didn’t have to sit through this? I think the series will end with Jake leaving the force.
Nobody who said “I’m one of the good ones” was really much of a good one. The only responsible thing to say is “I’m part of the problem and I’m sorry for that, but I’m listening and learning about how I can help fix things.”
While I can appreciate b99 tackling this issue because it is very prevalent in our society I feel like they rushed it with just one episode whereas I feel like this could honestly be a series long arc discussing the issue in less ham fisted ways
Rosa is a good cop, if she leaves doesn't that ensure the system stays corrupt? If more officers were like her and her coworkers than these issues would be severely lessened. Rather than quit she should've done what Holt did and move up the ladder enough to affect change for the better even a little then encourage other good cops to do the same and good people to join the force. I understand why she quit, knowing her character as we have this whole series it just looks like she took the easy way out.
it would be nice if more people were like her but that just isnt the case, especially with higher ups. also, the cards would be stacked against her to climb up the ladder since she's a bisexual person of color. holt might be commissioner by now if he werent a gay black man

Yup, the system to get rid of corrupt cops has to come from public pressure. The more a public spotlight is put on these corrupt cops, the better the chances of getting rid of them. System is broken. Might as well give the evidence to the media, or better, social media instead to get results.
There is no antiracism, just racism. But yeah, this is why the incestuous relationship between courts, police and politicians is fucking awful. The whole thing becomes corrupt and broken. No accountability for those who abuse their power, when they should be held to the highest standards.
Ah, yes. I love it when a beloved series makes seven seasons of great television then decides to go out with a bang by making the final season more focused on sociopolitical problems than the show itself.

But whichever way they go with it at the end of the day, I'll be here for all of it
But I did get the feeling that Jake might soon quit. I guess we'll have to wait and see
Especially with the Mac storyline from last episode, I’m wondering if he’ll quit to become a stay at home dad (or take on a different job where he can be more involved with Mac)
@@stephaniewestrick3721 I still think he'd work better with Rosa. Maybe it'll happen in the series finale

Then… that doesn’t happen. The system doesn’t change, it protects itself at the cost of the people it claims to serve.
Well that's Real life, it's probably happening now, it will be Idealistic if the System changed because the way the world is right, this displays the sad truth Americans live in.

@Jon Guiriba if the system is flawed then it needs to change. Police corruption shouldn't be tolerated
Yeah at the time, the recent police incidents really affected the show's writing
honestly kinda crazy that Rosa didnt make a copy.

Our police also aren't generally armed with lethal weaponry like handguns so even with a larger force we had lesser, though not non-existent, issues with police brutality but perhaps at the frictional level (i.e. the level that should be the expected minimum when at an optimum with other measures of crime prevention).

I initially didn’t like how this plot point got dropped and I thought they’d solve it. But then I realise this based on real life problem hasn’t exactly met it’s end either, so how could the fiction writers end it
I actually quite enjoyed this episode once the first 5 or so minutes had happened
I suppose you need them for people watching in future but it just felt like "Oh here's real life things that everyone know's happened" and just felt idk, a little out of place?
"classic racism" this show is perfect
I truly never hear a police force that are not corrupt
dam she wasnt even a villan she just knows how fuked the system is
Was there a main reason Rosa Diaz felt a lot of rage at Jake just asking
Just that he said he could sort everything and that he made it about him rather than the policing issues
He said the same thing earlier, about how he was one of the good ones.
I miss jake y Rosa toguether
i was absolutely expecting rosa to say "you think that's our only copy?"
Nobody who said “I’m one of the good ones” was really much of a good one. The only responsible thing to say is “I’m part of the problem and I’m sorry for that, but I’m listening and learning about how I can help fix things.”
actually a good representation of events
While I can appreciate b99 tackling this issue because it is very prevalent in our society I feel like they rushed it with just one episode whereas I feel like this could honestly be a series long arc discussing the issue in less ham fisted ways
They only got 13 episodes in both seasons 7 & 8. They were doing the best they can with what they got and they nailed it.
Season 8 is only 10 episodes not 13
@@MarkCalloway whaaaat. That sucks. I thought it was 13 eps.
I'd imagine there'll be more episodes
they brought it back in episode 3
Oh no, you're a villain!
Jake: Why’d you delete it?! You said you’d help us if we got proof!
kinda like finding that vader is your daddy kinda vibe
If you have to work that hard to convince someone, and yourself, that you're "one of the good ones", you're not one of the good ones.
Toit!
Toite* !
@@brendonscloud4743 aha yes very toite indeed
The fact it took him 8 seasons to realize that is kinda crazy but not surprising
Somehow more realistic than Law and Order.
I understand why she quit, knowing her character as we have this whole series it just looks like she took the easy way out.
it would be nice if more people were like her but that just isnt the case, especially with higher ups. also, the cards would be stacked against her to climb up the ladder since she's a bisexual person of color. holt might be commissioner by now if he werent a gay black man
@@ouchiehampton True, I mean it toke him like 30 years to become captain. Rosa being a bisexual Latina with a juvie record it'd take her like a decade just to be a sergeant.
It really contrasts well with why Holt didn't and how his marriage suffered I love this hsow for showing everything that got affected due to this
There's never an easy answer for something like this, there's no obviously right option. Each of us just has to do what we feel helps best
rosa is not a good cop. she is a good person. bad cops can be good people but as long as they are cops, they are bad. they are part of a system that simply does not work and therefore part of the problem.
Im not trying to bug u but will u put ep 3 clips soon
Episode 3 won’t be out till Thursday so I will when i can’t till it’s actually out
@@MarkCalloway i meant like those sneak peeks you gave b4 episodes 1 and 2
Yeah they aren’t out yet, the sneak peaks usually come out on a Monday
@@MarkCalloway oh alright
@@123abcdefghijklmnopqrstuv will post them when I see them but
This basically sums up the problem with bureaucracy and how corruption never gets cleaned up.
No accountability for those who abuse their power, when they should be held to the highest standards.
cool cool cool cool cool cool, our country is broken
When comedy and reality are the same
I love her in Ghosts
I just want to find one clip with Frank O'Sullivan in it and it's impossible for some reason
I’m posting that tomorrow
@@MarkCalloway yay!
Where can I watch it now, just because I missed the first two episodes on NBC at 8 p.m?
It might be there
@@123abcdefghijklmnopqrstuv no, it's not there
Then type brooklyn nine nine
Then u can watch it but i wont recommend.
Or u cod just wait till next week
How can you watch this? I cant this in amazon prime ( season 8 )
She’s not a villain for being evil; she’s a villain for hating bureaucracy, and I feel that.
John oliver did a great piece on this issue. Explains some details this explanation left out.
John Oliver does a really good segment on why this is actually a thing.
This was a kida a spoiler for me haven't seen any of the new session keeping away from it on UA-cam until I've watched it at least 5 times
I know this is supposed to be satirical comedy, but honestly this explains a. lot.
its a not bad episode but kinda heavy for starting the season tho
I like that they just didn’t waste time. Like just run in and said, “We are doing this!”
yea season was shit
Ah, yes. I love it when a beloved series makes seven seasons of great television then decides to go out with a bang by making the final season more focused on sociopolitical problems than the show itself.
Love it or hate it, it was the responsible thing to do as a show focused on police force to adress those problem directly without trying to smooth the edge given the context during the show's production. I'm glad that they didn't completely scrapped the show or just replaced the characters completely.
@@bdletoast09What do you mean responsible?
It's a daytime fictional comedy. How much do you really think they influenced what the police may or may not have done/ will do?
People switch to things like B99 to get away from the relentless barrage of racial politics on the news
@@Rascal-of-War The point is not to influence the police action, the point is to point out how fucked up it is that it keeps happening. Not acknowelding this in a cop comedy show just because it's uncomfortable is exactly what results in the police getting away with it. It smooths things over, makes it seem like it's not that big of a deal and that it's fine to ignore it. When even a funny TV show that presents its cop characters as good guys makes a point of reminding the audience how horrendous the system is, it's trying to lift your apathy so that you don't passively encourage that system.
@@bdletoast09 That's a stupid argument. It's a comedy. And as mentioned before people don't want this heavy handed political messaging in something that's supposed to be generally light hearted. Especially during times such as these.
The writers of the show didn't profile people. The cast didn't set fire to their neighbourhoods in riots.
So how is it their responsibility to try to fix these issues, when they themselves probably don't understand them well enough?
The writers thought they'd lose views due to the stupid racial tension being stirred up by the media so they went hard on the messaging in an attempt to protect the shows popularity.
@@Rascal-of-War When people believe that not being responsible for issues means that they don't need to lift a single finger to try and at the very least adress them, that's when we all get crush by the system. Thinking like this is why we're losing. This is the bear minimum, they're not canceling the show as an act of protest, they're just reminding the audience that despite this show being funny, the actual police is actively awful and we need to remember that, we don't get to just ignore it while it's making people suffer around us.
So sure, you can be cynical and think it's all about ratings, and who knows, you might be right, it's not like TV networks are known for their great ethic. But you're entirely wrong if you think that entertainment should not comment on real life politics. Especially comedy.
This scene was soooo long lmao
Qualified immunity is a hitch
