  • $6.7 trillion. That is how much Americans spent using their debit or credit cards in 2019. More than 60% of those purchases were made using cards from Visa, a company that has long dominated the payment card industry. As payment cards become more essential in our daily lives, Visa has quickly grown to become one of the most valuable companies in America. So how exactly does Visa make money and why does it dominate the payment card industry? Watch the video to find out.
Clarification: The 10% mentioned in the video at 11:45 refers to 10% of the average 2.2% of the swipe fee charged to merchants.
Americans are increasingly using plastic to spend their money, enabling Visa to grow its dominance in the credit and debit card space.
People in the U.S. spent $6.7 trillion through credit and debit cards in 2019, up 88% from 2009, according to a 2020 report by HSN Consultants. Of those transactions, more than 60% were made with Visa cards.
This has helped Visa grow into one of the world’s most valuable companies. As of Oct. 19, Visa has a market valuation of more than $491 billion. Its shares are also up more than 170% over the past five years.
However, some retailers argue that Visa’s success has come at the expense of merchants who rely on them to process payments. Some have even said the fees imposed by Visa are too high for businesses to survive.
“I know a lot of business owners and it saddens me because so many people have come to accept it as it is what it is,” Hub Convenience Stores CEO Jared Scheeler said. “These prices are so ridiculous. The amount we pay in swipe fees is so high that we have to do something about it, somebody has to do something about it.”
Swipe fees collected by Visa and Mastercard ballooned to $67.6 billion in 2019 from $25.6 billion in 2009, according to data from the National Retail Federation. The overall processing fees paid by U.S. merchants to accept all card payments jumped to $116.4 billion in 2019, up 88% since 2009.
“This is a central part of the problem with their dominance,” Merchants Payments Coalition executive committee member Doug Kantor said. “The exact way they were set up was to be this dominant price-setting entity and the fact that it’s gone on this long is a problem for everybody else in the economy.”
Visa declined to comment on this story.
To be sure, those in support of Visa argue the company is on the merchants’ side.
“Visa on some level is a victim of their own success in the sense that they’re so ubiquitous and so secure and so easy to use that people begin to take it for granted,” MoffettNathanson analyst Lisa Ellis said. “Visa’s business structure is very balanced and if anything is actually skewed, believe it or not, towards the merchants. They actually get the majority of their revenue from the banks and the ecosystem that’s supporting the merchants.”

13:27 She isn't wrong. Accepting cash is expensive. I worked at McDonalds for 2 years in college:
    1) All the cashiers had to be trained to use a register, get use to counting out change
1b) Anything involving human's results in errors. 1-2 dollars per employee per day is a lot more than transaction fees
    2) The manager spent 45 minutes to an hour balancing the books every night
2b) Swapping out the change in the register takes time
2c) Running out of change is always a problem
    3) Being "short" whether actually or on paper consumes a ton of time to figure out
    4) That cash has to be securely stored and transported
With digital only: No more mistakes, instantly balanced books, no more cash storage logistics.
Additionally, you increase customer through put

Agreed. I get that merchants dislike swipe fees (duh) but the alternative (cash only) seems so much worse. Average Walmart store does about $125,000 of sales per day. 2-3% swipe fees seem relatively cheep compared to trying to move that much physical cash around every day, ensuring enough change in the drawers, and as you mentioned, just trying to keep track of it all is a huge burden. I've basically stopped shopping at places that charge extra for credit card purchases. I'm like, fine, you don't want to provide me with convivence? I guess you don't want my money. I'll go elsewhere.
The only major problem I see with credit card fees is that they use a lot of those fees to pay card holders with miles, points, cashback etc, which is a nice perk that people who don't have the credit to get these cards, or are "underbanked", basically get screwed out of for being poor or having bad credit. Like they say, "it's expensive to be poor."

Out of all the interviews and points raised in this video, Lisa Ellis' views seems the most balanced. Because she mentioned that yes, Visa's payment processing fees can be expensive, but so is cash, and cash processing can even be much higher. She also touched on the point of consumers benefitting off the convenience of swiping a card instead of paying in cash.
What however, is totally missing from this video is regarding the additional sales that card payments and other cashless payments bring to a business. I mean, it is very common sense to assume that businesses turn to card payments like Visa (well, in this case, Visa is mentioned because it is the most successful company in the card payment processing sector, just like Microsoft for commercial OS, Amazon for e-commerce and so on), because it helps increase sales. Some people don't carry much cash on them, so if a business only accepts cash, that would mean lost sales, or opportunity cost. Also, there's the concept that people spend more using cards than cash, because of they don't feel the impact straight away. There's a lot to this in the realm of psychology.
One thing though, is that because in most industries where there are highly successful companies especially with homogenous products/ services, there usually exists some sort of dubious practices, and it's these that need to be stamped out. One other thing that is obviously not mentioned is Visa's fees compared to other close competitors, in cold hard figures. Nope, all we hear at the beginning of the video is how Visa's fees are too high, second highest expense line in the P&L after labor, and so on. Interesting, to compare payment transaction fees with labor. For one, how much revenue and transactions does the company have? And actually, it's possible for transaction payment fees to be above labor, it all depends on the scale, nature of business and business model.
Overall, this is quite an interesting video, though more context needs to be given in order not to mislead some viewers.

Agree on your point about how Visa enables consumers to buy things. A lot of times, the consumer will not really bring too much cash with them to purchase something unless they specifically planned to buy something. Impulse buys are tempered by how much money a consumer has and how easy it is to access an ATM. There's also the fact that the ability to pay off purchases via monthly installments also enables consumers to buy more (and more expensive) things. This is an inherent value brought by Visa and other credit card providers.

This video needs a few updates:
The "four-party model" terminology (also the fourth party isn't the payment network e.g. Visa, it's the Acquirer/Merchant Bank) is outdated - it should be "open-loop" because there are many parties involved
"Swipe fees" is WAY too generic and doesn't give the viewer any sense of what makes up "swipe fees", which is mostly interchange and that interchange is actually between banks (issuing bank and acquiring bank) NOT the card networks. Interchange is typically set as an agreement between banks, the card payment network, and any existing legislation (e.g. Durbin).

Which is low. Yet business are charged in the 2 - 5 % range which means that 90 - 95 % of those fees are going to other parties. Will.we see a break down of thhow it gets split by the parties?

The video is very misleading. The fees that the merchants complain about go to the banks not Visa. Visa makes a few cents per transaction. If the banks were to be forced to make less money, it would minimally impact Visa. Crypto in its present form cannot compete with Visa as it takes minutes for a transaction to complete as opposed to sub second for Visa. Also, when I last did the math a few years ago the cost of processing a crypto transaction was thousands times more than a Visa transaction. Fine for a speculative medium, terrible for actually buying things. There is a lot more to it than that, but that gives a flavor of the situation.

12:30 oh my god... she's actually so deluded... It is not remotely skewed in favour of the merchants. She's a senior equities analyst and yet she doesn't understand basic accounting. Merchants don't get earn their revenue from the banks. Merchants earn their revenue from customers. Banks simply facilitate the transaction. For there to be such a significant cost just to process the transaction is absurd. Paypal does the same thing for much less. The one differentiating factor which she didn't mention which would make her argument so much stronger, is that Visa eliminates credit risk for the merchant. By using Visa, customers are able to pay on credit which is a convenience and the merchant doesn't need to take on the risk that the customer won't pay later on. That still doesn't justify the high costs however. Visa can absolutely afford to reduce their fees but there is no incentive to do so because of the lack of competition.
