Jim Al-Khalili is Distinguished Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Surrey and one of Britain's best-known science communicators. He has written numerous books, including 'The World According to Physics' (Princeton), 'Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed' and 'Life on the Edge: The Coming of Age of Quantum Biology'. He is a fellow of the Royal Society.

I've watched Prof. Al-Khalili's presentations and lectures for years, some of them several times. He is one of the few presenters who can help me feel better without making me cringe. Rational, hopeful, witty (in a good way) -- sort of a hero for me.
Jim Al-Khalili is always worth a listen.
He did great in his hardest challenge yet, the Cunk on Earth interview ;)
To be able to just stand there with no props or whizz bang, just the odd slide and keep you entrigued is the sign of a great communicator. Great presentation.

Professor Al-Khalili is one of the view scientists who really understand the simple minds of the common people (like me) and make them understand nature in all its ways.

As part of my devotion to overcoming Human disabilities this was a very well Lecture. I also took notes. I am reading up more about, All clocks on earth at sea level tick at the same rate and The rainbow is not a semicircle. If you were to stand on a mountain you will see it is a full circle.
Respect to you and science, this is why we don't need politicians/so called leaders with a fixed self bias

2022 the year of science , thank you .
Science is the curiousity about our own existence. Trying to get a grasp of why. Asking the fundamental question "why do I exist", "what is existence", "do I understand what I am talking about", "does all come from 'nothing' where even 'nothing' comes from". Doubting is asking these fundamental questions and not expecting to find answers for all our questions.
I think poetry and science are intertwined... Jim knows how to explain things... 👍
Poor Jim-he was at the Royal Society a couple of days ago, complaining that his book did *_not_* win the _Royal Society Science Book Prize_ 😢. Had this talk been uploaded earlier-seeing as it was recorded on 5 April 2022-perhaps it might have helped popularize his book in time to get nominated. Why the delay, RI?

Really interesting. My first assumption would be that the atoms patterns change due to interference from electricity used in the camera device? Hence why turning it off resumes the pattern back to the one similar to light? I know nothing on this subject, this is just where my mind went. 😅

20:00 this sounds nice, but is in fact really dangerous. You argue that it is not allowed to challenge a scientific fact unless you create science anew. The inevitable result is that it becomes impossible to distinguish facts from dogmas, making science to become more and more a religion over time. It also challenges what you started out with as the difference between a scientist and a conspiracy theorist, as you essentially argue that unless someone can redo all of scientific history themselves, they cannot change the scientific mind, which is effectively identical to staying silent like the conspiracy theorist.
Enjoyed the lecture. Agree lots of biases. Certain scientists do NOT admit when they get wrong and don’t print retractions. Especially climatologists who made some outlandish predictions. I agree climate change is real BUT certain predictions have not come true and it’s not the crisis we are lead to believe
Can you give an example of what kind of predictions that have not come true (yet) please?
Florida being flooded . Increases activity in tornadoes and hurricanes . Melting of polar ice caps etc look it up yourself
Climate models are highly unreliable
Polar bears were intensely hunted
1976 world banned much hunting
Polar bear population recovered and now at its highest in 6 decades

If time runs the same everywhere at sea level, I guess from a spacetime point of view, the earth IS flat after all. Its non-euclidian, parellel lines meet, but so what? Lots of places in the universe are non-euclidian.
Global warming is real and man-made, but it's not the end of the world. It is a manageable problem.
Most of the alarmism about climate change tends to ignore our ability to adapt.

I totally agree with most he says, but:
18:55 nothing travels faster through space then light. That is NOT true ....
I learned that it is theoretically possible there are particle that faster then light, but can't SLOW DOWN to the light speed.
So symmetrical to our slower then light speed situation.
Also StarTrek uses the smart SF trick, that it does NOT travel THROUGH SPACE. They morph space itself or tunnel through space,
so the light speed through space doesn't matter.
Archaeologists have no explanation for Gobeklï Tebë and they have said nothing will change their mind that hunter gatherers suddenly quarried, carried and built great big megalithic structures, then went back to hunting.
So by your own definition, Archaeologists are conspiracy theorists.
Almost all archeologists have nothing to do with excavations at Gobeklï Tebë. The methods archeologists approach digs with are sound.
This is a good and potentially productive video. Nonetheless. science is, fundamentally, a social phenomenon; e.g., peer reviewed; distinguishable from other, very similar, phenomena like religion and politics by the criterion of verifiable empirical experiment. Mere observation alone, despite the intricacy of linguistic explanatory models, is not sufficient, ultimately, for the genuine ascription of the definition of "science". Correlation is not causation. That is to say, even the most intricately articulated explanation of our experience of phenomena is, in-and-of-itself, not sufficient to verify a scientific theory or hypothesis as to what it is and how it arises (although it may very well serve heuristic purpose in developing them).
Without going into hopefully unnecessary detail, then, I would say that ultimately, despite the hopes and aspirations of those who wish to call themselves "scientists" and their like-minded social community (which is everything we as humans are doing, after all), science and technology are FUNDAMENTALLY connected epistemologically, and we must recognize the central importance of language in the domain of epistemology. But that aside, there is no such-a-thing as "pure science." And science and technology, philosophy, and religion are part of a continuum, along with the arts, of course :) And let us not forget language itself !!

Big fan of Dr. A but disappointed about the comment regarding the 2020 US presidential election. Those who do not find it critical to fully evaluate legitimate concerns about election integrity are those who are creating their own reality. What if Copernicus merely blew by annoying quirks in his observations because they did not fit the prevailing view?
Big fan, but didn't appreciate when scientists try to be political. Sorry, but last thing that I want to hear is politics. Maybe Doctor should implement some of his adviced, and he will find out that involving political commentary just shows his belief and is not part of scientific methodology. Love most his lectures, but this one is disappointing.

There was a point to be made that explained it well. He missed a lot by not introducing reproducibility as a concept and clearly stating that he meant empirical science. I'm a microbiologist active in my field and this has to be one of the least adept ways I've seen the scientific method described. The joy of science is that you can discover these truths on your own, that you define the experiment in cleaver ways to trick nature into spilling the beans. I was really put off by his dismissal of History as a science, I understand that he meant an empirical science but his way of explaining sounds like a fanatic ramble. Collaboration is also one of the joys of doing science, maybe if he had invited other people into this project each putting in biographical anecdotes or at least checking the way the ideas are portrayed, this talk (and the book if this lecture is a good summary of it) would have been at least engaging. I quitted 16 minutes in.
What he says is true of pure science.
What he fails to realise is that we live in a real world and science is no longer pure.
Science, it appears, is the new politics, and politics is the new science. How much is he getting paid for his propaganda..
