- Excellent quality audio from a "new" (to me) old Opal show recording I acquired recently via the dimeadozen live show torrent sharing site.
I believe this show recording has the best sounding audio of Hope era Opal I've yet heard. I intend to soon up the whole show to my yt channel [later edit - one of many projects I didn't get around to doing yet, but still intend to].
I thought I'd start with upping just one song from the show. I like the Velvet Underground a lot, and their song "Heroin" is one of my faves. And though Hope is one of my fave singers and I generally love the covers she's done of others' songs, I never before upped as a single upload Hope singing "Heroin" (it's included in the 1988 Italy video I've upped, however), although I have quite a few different examples of it 'cause there are a bunch 1988 shows available with Hope singing the song.
At many 1988 Opal shows, Hope abbreviated the song's lyrics down to just a handful of lines she'd repeat. Lou Reed's lyrics on that song are so good, imo, if perhaps over-stated in spots (e.g. "I feel just like Jesus' son")! So, I'm pleased Hope includes more original lines from Lou's song in this Frankfurt show than at some other 1988 shows, though it's still an abbreviated version, lyrically. And her vocals are nice and clear in this recording.
Hope joined Opal in November, 1987 about a week after original singer Kendra Smith quit abruptly mid-tour after the band's Nov. 12, Providence, RI show. Opal played North Amercan tour shows, primarily opening for JAMC, into December, 1987 with Hope singing. In March & April, 1988, Opal-with-Hope played this European tour. In 1989, Opal changed their name to Mazzy Star.
Btw, it perhaps should be noted that, contrary to false rumours spread even by some journalists at well known music mags over the years, multiple reliable sources report Hope's and the band's main drug of choice has been wine, not opioids! Not a band of junkies.
Thanks go to technically-able kneesfudd for improving and sharing the recording, and to hanwaker for putting it on the dimeadozen site on his behalf, which is where I acquired it.
The on stage pics are all screenshots from the live video from Opal's March, 1988 show at Rimini, Italy, findable on my channel.
Anyone interested can DL an audio file of the whole show in lossless FLAC format where I upped it, here: drive.google.c...
Listening... you're right about Hope's vocals being clear in the mix and not buried in it. I download, then burn the flac files to CD for full spectrum audio to play at home or in my car.
I mostly listen to UA-cam and mp3 music while using a Bluetooth speaker. One day lossless will be the standard, but not today.
Thanks for sharing mate, keep up the great work!!

Not a good cover version from a girl without any veins ! She looks like drinking one coffee would kill her ! Bloodless and not fitting ! I prefer when she sings her own songs !
I prefer when Hope sings anything.
so post your own version "with veins" dear mr Cowell
You're off your head,,, if you feel the song I'd say it's anyones song,,, love early Hope and later stuff to,,, this song suits and although they went into dreamscope music later they were known to people in the know they were users,,, there's a few different versions some are better than this personally,,, either way great cover by a supposed unlikely singer,,, such a true song if you've been there
