The best way this movie brings Alien back to its roots is how it's about a company fucking over its employees without remorse. All these sequels focus so much on lore and gods and ultra science but like, it's so boring. This I really liked that their motivations are so simple and understandable.
Some of the most horrifying stuff in the film is just in the first ten minutes and well before the Alien comes close to showing up (besides the prologue technically).
The first three movies were definitely about corporations screwing over other people for an alien super weapon, Delivery workers, prison inmates, military members. Heck the tv show that was talked about a few years or so back was going to be corporation using poor neighborhoods, mainly minority neighborhoods, to test the Alien out
Ironically, the lore and gods made the films not only boring, but also the Aliens less scary. What made the xenomorphes such a horror icon was the way they showed how quickly humanity's hubris and need to dominate natural world could be humbled by the nature. The back story given to them in Prometheus ironically undercut that and made xenomorphes so much less impressive.

The first half of the movie was perfect. It was well shot, the retro sets match the originals, and the alien effects were awesome. Aside from the android, the characters were ok
I think this was hands down the best Alien movie after Aliens easily even just based on art direction and special effects. Actually making an attempt to continue that retro future is such a breath of fresh air for these movies. In my opinion, the biggest problem was the length of the set up. I get that it's horror and they want to build suspense, but the beginning is way too long before we get to the core meat of the film. But honestly? It was worth it. The way that it's shot and the environment its in feels really good, like the turning off the gravity thing really makes you feel like you're on an old space station. Also, the practical effects they use are great and better than any Ive seen this year, idk it's just cool as a fan of the og two seeing one of these movies bring it back to the horror focus and put real effort into sets and effects.
It’s an unfortunate balancing act because Ian Holm’s widow not only signed off but wholeheartedly endorsed it because she felt like Hollywood shafted him in the last years of his life. Fun fact: One of the producers of the film was Scott Free Productions, a property of Ridley Scott. The space station is divided into two, one of them called "Romulus" and the other "Remus", as the legendary founders of Rome. Pretty needlessly, as we never see the "Remus" part of the station. So, why the "Remus" reference? Maybe because in the roman myth, Romulus and Remus were raised by a wolf (we even see an illustration of the myth on board), and that is (almost) the title of the last Ridley Scott show for TV: "Raised by Wolves", which can be interpreted as a tribute to the original and main director of the Alien saga.
6:35 they turned up the tempsture in the room to their body temperature so it would mask them Also the alien franchise is one I can never get tired of, it has such scary creatures which can create an endless possibility of scary scenarios
David Jonsson as Andy is the best android performance I have seen in over a decade. He perfectly captures how artificial intelligence can also at times be innocent and infantile. While also being pure.
I'm delighted that Cailee Spaeny is receiving more leading roles in projects following her star turn in "Priscilla." You really feel compassion for Rain, who's as idealistic as Ripley was cynical, and want her to succeed.
To be honest, I liked the "cameo" of Rook in this movie. Afterall, he was just a model of Androids. So its not far fetched that more of him are wandering through the galaxy. You better believe that the company forgoes individuality if they can save a buck or two. And if we didnt knew the backstory, he would be a very trustworthy science officer from manerisms and looks.
You're absolutely 100% right on the practical effects, as well as especially the set design and production design. Actually real and tangible sets are an absolute game changer! And yes, the retro-futuristic and analog aesthetic that made the first Alien movie so iconic is back and it REALLY benefits this film.
The xenomorphs look amazing in this movie in my opinion, like the face huggers and the full fledged version. The environments look amazing. The way that it's shot looks amazing. The contuation of the retro future is amazing. Idk the beginning has too much set up and I could see it being annoying to get through on rewatches, but it's absolutely worth imo. I mean, the first two movies are some of my favorite movies of all time, and imo everything past that has sucked. Seeing the genuine effort they put in here to honor the atmosphere and tone of the original easily makes this the third best in the franchise for me.
This film sorta felt like a combination of Rogue One and the first Jurassic World where it’s definitely not perfect but it’s easily the best entry since the originals and gives you just enough awesome moments to keep you satisfied.
I really appreciate that they acknowledged every part of the franchise and made use of it, even the Prometheus films which you figure they’d have completely ignored or overwritten because of their divisive reception.
I actually think that is another example of what Doug said about there being too many favours to this film. As someone who had played the game, I appreciated it, but my friends who had not found those bits confusing.
Not only that, but we both talked about the Alien movies and I was telling him about how I was almost concerned about this movie until I saw it in theaters. Like I was worried that it would end up like the others after Aliens (1986). :)

This movie was everything great with the Alien franchise and everything bad with the Alien franchise meshed into one package. Still i had a good time when i saw it. Went with my dad, we both liked it enough.
I thought the tones were handled pretty well actually. The ship they’re in is split into two halves. And whenever the characters are in one side of the ship. They experience the slower horror tones of Alien. And when they’re in the other half of the ship. They experience the more blood rushing & fast action set pieces of Aliens. Also, please play Alien Isolation. It’s easily my favourite thing in this franchise since Aliens.
When I saw this movie with my dad and step mother. When the facehugers came around she literally ran out of the theatre and my dad was just freaked out by them especially with the one xeno.
On the sixteenth day of disneycember, the critic gave to me. 16 Alien invasions 15 Will Friedle sitcoms 14 Red Queens Ruling 13 scary parodies 12 meteor showers 11 Princesses sailing 10 Sandwiches 9 teens screaming 8 Jedi masters 7 cat and mouse adventures 6 Futuristic Officers 5 FUNNY SUPERHEROES 4 gliding spider-men 3 New Emotions 2 Nostalgic Mutants and A Tarantino movie
I think for Disneycember 2025, Doug should focus on historical/biopics like Johnny Tremain, Lincoln, Bridge of Spies, The Last Duel, A Hidden Life, ect.
As an Alien fan, this definitely did not disappoint and it was my biggest surprise of the year. No joke, during the third act when a reveal happens, three different people in the theater audibly said "WTF?!" at almost the exact same time
As much i kinda liked Romulus, i would have preferred a couple of things. Michael Fassbenders David in place of the Ash/Rook Droid and have that space station be the exact same one from Alien Covenant and tie up the entire Prometheus/Covenant storylines once and for all.
to me this is the modern mission imposible 2 like you said in your review while critics praised the tradional movie moments but panned it when the it become unapologetic silly at end(just watch Writer Brandon McNulty video about endings) To me in this movie tradional movie moments (or tropes) are so boring and repetitive that when the unapologetic silly moment comes out at the end it becomes more memorable and entertaining
I think it would have been better if maybe the first half of the movie was on the ship and then when they try to escape their ship crashes back on the planet with some of the aliens inside or something like that and have the second part take place on the planet. I don't know I guess I always wanted them to take another jab at what they tried in avp requiem with the aliens in a colony or some populated area and we are seeing them take over and people trying to fight back or at least survive. But anyway I did enjoy the movie though there were some plot holes and while these characters were not the dumbest cast, that goes to Covenant, I will agree with Doug that they were not the best. Although I loved how they used the facehuggers more and showed that they are just as scary as the others. Overall I saw this in theaters and I don't regret it.
Don't know how familiar y'all are with Corridor Crew, but nj, I just finished their VFX breakdown of Alien Romulus about 2 minutes ago. So imagine my surprise when this popped up in my notifications almost immediately after 😄
Almost seems like they were TRYING to go for Alien Isolation as a movie. The main character looks alot like someone who was chosen to play Amanda but later in production and writing stages... They changed it? 🤔🤔🤔
Proper limited ammo turns action horror into survival horror. Having a machine gun didn't solve all the problems, it only meant a small force could survive a large force for a limited time. And I enjoyed that the limited ammo had to be used for zero G dodging.

I loved the worldbuilding at the start of the movie, showing how mineworkers were nothing more than modern slaves. And extra points for bringing back the Pulse Rifle, coolest sci fi gun ever, forever
My girlfriend and I went to see this, she’s never seen an alien movie and I’ve seen them all countless times. For me it was a decent movie, and for her it was the introduction into the universe. She wanted to know more and see the other movies, so we did. And that’s really what Romulus is, it’s a way for new movie goers to get into the universe we all know and love…. Except 3.
This movie was actually ok. Everybody it’s saying it’s really good but for me was just fine, maybe I am crazy but I have seen much better alien movies than this, it’s better than Prometheus & Covenant but it’s nowhere as good as the first two Alien movies

As someone who hasn't watched an Aliens related movie since Prometheus... this did not encourage me to watch any of the others that came after Prometheus
It's a real pity for alien. If it's not stuck regurgitating the same plot beats, it's torn between trying to be high-minded or just plain dumb. They have never quite found that balance since 3, in my opinion, if we're not counting games, of course, but even that somewhat falls to some of those pratfalls too.
I think a common criticism with modern Alien movies is the characters, in this one yes I didn’t REALLY care about the side characters but I did kinda fear for rain and Andy’s survival since they’re siblings
I was surprised to hear that other people didn't like seeing Ash from the fist movie in this one. His appearance was by far my favorite part of this movie.
2:10 "It rhymes, like poetry." 3:05 And they still use CRT computer monitors with a limited color palette. MY brother and his now-wife took me out to see this one on my birthday (a 2nd choice after finding out BORDERLANDS SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED) and I thought it was alright. Not up there with the 1st 2 ALIEN movies, but better than most other entries. I knew as soon as the good android got upgraded and started speaking cryptically, things were going wrong. I for one didn't mind SPOILER the return of Ash, or an android that looked like the same guy, which I thought was intentionally off-puttingly creepy. But I thought the callback to PROMETHEUS was unnecessary. /SPOILER
Cailee Spaeny has such a great screen presence. She made a somewhat bland character memorable, all the actors did. I absolutely love the scene where the spaceship takes off at the beginning and her character sees the sun for the first time. It was a great way of showing instead of telling. Details like that made the movie worth it for me, and kept it from being another soulless reboot/egacy sequel.
I havent seen it, but it is being called the 3rd best Alien film made and the first good one since 1986 so I'll probably buy it. What we kind of need is a Colonial Marines film that adds to the universe. Aliens are a key role but the Marines are fighting other shit on other planets. Maybe a break from the Alien or even one Alien in a scenario of Marines vs another life form. An A symmetrical film where a single Alien is picking off both sides but both sides assume its the other and neither are engaging the Alien correctly.
I might be in the minority, but I did enjoy how they linked facehuggers to the black goo. Made sense of why (the then assumed) embryos assumed traits of the host after implantation. I think that was a very underrated way of re-writing how facebuggers worked, as we assumed for decades it just implanted some thing, instead of a chemical/DNA. Really appreciated this, but at the same, with anything, over explaining ruins the mystery. However, at this point, we have very little mystery about a Xenomorph, it shouldn't be considered a negative to connect the old with the new in a interesting way.
yeah was a serviceable movie with some gorgeous cinematography. The first 30 minutes was fantastic in its world building, beyond that though the callback tropes really distracted. The android was the best character imo

That Uncanny Valley Scene 😳
You're absolutely 100% right on the practical effects, as well as especially the set design and production design. Actually real and tangible sets are an absolute game changer!
And yes, the retro-futuristic and analog aesthetic that made the first Alien movie so iconic is back and it REALLY benefits this film.
💯
I was really surprised with how much I loved this movie, I thought the practical effects paid off greatly and the IMAX experience was amazing honestly
Agreed
That felt like kind of an abrupt ending, like Doug still had one or two more sentences he wanted to say
How is bunch of working class kids more competent than team of scientists specifically assrmbled for the mission?
It made no sense how no one else investigated the Romulus or how the characters could leave the planet.
@@anubusx If the massacre happened just recently, it would. And how did them leaving not make sense? Their job involved it.
They pulled an Armageddon.
@@XenoSpyro It is not that the kids in Romulus were particularly good, but "scientists" in Prometheus were morons.
I loved how he incorporated elements from the game Alien Isolation here.
I actually think that is another example of what Doug said about there being too many favours to this film. As someone who had played the game, I appreciated it, but my friends who had not found those bits confusing.
I consider this film now Canon to the Alien-verse since it takes place in between 2 of the greatest films ever made.
Alien was featured in Disney mgm studios and Disney world for two decades.
*The best Alien movie since Aliens.*
@@averymerrick that’s not saying much though…
@@claymccoy You’re not wrong.
0:39 I actually had met the director of this film after he had participated on the VFX breakdown of Alien: Romulus and he’s a really cool dude. :)
Not only that, but we both talked about the Alien movies and I was telling him about how I was almost concerned about this movie until I saw it in theaters. Like I was worried that it would end up like the others after Aliens (1986). :)
The ideas here have so much potential to be intense but everything is so convenient that it breaks the terror everytime
I personally thought it was a good time.
Ideas for Disneycember:
-102 Dalmatians
-101 Dalmatian Street
-Pooh's Heffalump Movie
-The Emperor's New School
-Pixar Short Films Collection: Volumes 1-3
-The Pixar Story
-Robin Hood: Men in Tights
-Everyone's Hero
-The Muppet Movie
-The Great Muppet Caper
-The Muppets Wizard of Oz
-Jim Henson Idea Man
-Mickey: The Story of a Mouse
Disney's Sing-Along Songs Series
-Mickey's Magical Christmas: Snowed in at the House of Mouse
-Prep & Landing Film Series
-Bluey
Seeing an alien movie with the disney logo is the weirdest thing ever.
Soooo true
This movie was everything great with the Alien franchise and everything bad with the Alien franchise meshed into one package. Still i had a good time when i saw it. Went with my dad, we both liked it enough.
Allen Romulus*
If you know you know
"something new" Alien Resurrection would like to speak to you.
That movie was terrible tho.
Imagine going back in time and showing Doug this.
I like how this is an DisneyCember review about Ridley's Scott's Alien: Romulus.
When I saw this movie with my dad and step mother. When the facehugers came around she literally ran out of the theatre and my dad was just freaked out by them especially with the one xeno.
Now that you've done this, Dreamworksuary, Twilight Tober Zone, and Bat May, you should do Nickuly/Aprilodeon and June Henson.
On the sixteenth day of disneycember, the critic gave to me.
16 Alien invasions
15 Will Friedle sitcoms
14 Red Queens Ruling
13 scary parodies
12 meteor showers
11 Princesses sailing
10 Sandwiches
9 teens screaming
8 Jedi masters
7 cat and mouse adventures
6 Futuristic Officers
5 FUNNY SUPERHEROES
4 gliding spider-men
3 New Emotions
2 Nostalgic Mutants
and
A Tarantino movie
It feels so weird seeing Alien Romulus on Disney+.
Prometheus and Covenant ruined the Xenomorph.
That android 'cameo' was soooooooooooooo bad.
That mouth....that mouth haunts me still.
This film wasn't that good.
to me this is the modern mission imposible 2 like you said in your review while critics praised the tradional movie moments but panned it when the it become unapologetic silly at end(just watch Writer Brandon McNulty video about endings)
To me in this movie tradional movie moments (or tropes) are so boring and repetitive that when the unapologetic silly moment comes out at the end it becomes more memorable and entertaining
On DisneyCember, no one can hear you scream.
I would love to see Doug reviewing either Event Horizon, Dark City or Virus
Didn’t he dislike Event Horizon?
I will say this about Event Horizon: It may not be a perfect movie but Sam Neil’s performance as the villain is TOP TIER! Gotta love him.
Doug already reviewed Event Horizon years ago. It was during a previous Nostalgiaween event.
I so want him to review Dark City since he did all The Matrix films and compared the films and compard them to the 1998 claasic.
@@anubusx I need to watch Dark City at some point.
never thought we'd get aliens here.
Don't know how familiar y'all are with Corridor Crew, but nj, I just finished their VFX breakdown of Alien Romulus about 2 minutes ago. So imagine my surprise when this popped up in my notifications almost immediately after 😄
This movie felt like there was a strict list of what had to be in it.
Almost seems like they were TRYING to go for Alien Isolation as a movie. The main character looks alot like someone who was chosen to play Amanda but later in production and writing stages... They changed it? 🤔🤔🤔
Aliens of a Disney logo is really hilarious and really funny Thank you
Proper limited ammo turns action horror into survival horror. Having a machine gun didn't solve all the problems, it only meant a small force could survive a large force for a limited time. And I enjoyed that the limited ammo had to be used for zero G dodging.
Disagree, the hipster that bullies the Android is really annoying!
🎶On the sixteenth disneycember Doug gave to me sixteen aliens, FIFTEEN TGIF SITCOMS, fourteen red hearts, thirteen unfunny parody movies, twelve transforemers, eleven waves made out of gold, TEN BIG SANDWICHES, nine mysterious calls, eight force witches, seven orphan girls, six broken Stalones,FIVE CAMEOS, four spider webs, three memory orbs, two Wolverine claws and a cigarette from the disney brand🎶
I was so creeped out by the face huggers and this Alien Romulus movie is good but nowhere near as Great as the first two Alien movies
Alien cromulent.
It’s a Distant 3rd best movie but far better than anything we got the last 20 or so years
I loved the worldbuilding at the start of the movie, showing how mineworkers were nothing more than modern slaves.
And extra points for bringing back the Pulse Rifle, coolest sci fi gun ever, forever
Alien resurrection done right
I'll have to get this movie on Blu-Ray after the holiday season comes and goes
My girlfriend and I went to see this, she’s never seen an alien movie and I’ve seen them all countless times. For me it was a decent movie, and for her it was the introduction into the universe. She wanted to know more and see the other movies, so we did. And that’s really what Romulus is, it’s a way for new movie goers to get into the universe we all know and love…. Except 3.
"Did it deliver? .....no...."
Seriously Doug!?!?!?!?
I can't wait for Alien: Earth next year
This movie was actually ok. Everybody it’s saying it’s really good but for me was just fine, maybe I am crazy but I have seen much better alien movies than this, it’s better than Prometheus & Covenant but it’s nowhere as good as the first two Alien movies
I actually quite enjoyed this movie alot. Have watched a few times and will def be seeing it more in the future.
wait...why Disney? did i miss something stupid?
Disney own all of Fox Studios IPs.
On the 16th "DisneyCember" my Critic gave to Me...
-. Sixteen "Alien" Movies
-. Fifteen Decent Sitcoms
-. Fourteen Teenage Villains
-. Thirteen Spoof Movies
-. Twelve Astronauts
-. Eleven "T.V Pilots"
-. Ten Fat Kids
-. Nine Slasher Killers
-. Eight Lame Jedis
-. Seven Pointless Movies
-. Six Cops From The Future
FIVE SWEARING HEROES!!
-. Four Spider-Man Games
-. Three Complex Emotions
-. Two Returning Mutants
And a Twist Dance with a lot of Feet
As someone who hasn't watched an Aliens related movie since Prometheus... this did not encourage me to watch any of the others that came after Prometheus
It's a real pity for alien. If it's not stuck regurgitating the same plot beats, it's torn between trying to be high-minded or just plain dumb. They have never quite found that balance since 3, in my opinion, if we're not counting games, of course, but even that somewhat falls to some of those pratfalls too.
I love that technically, the female Xenomorphs are Disney Princesses because their mom is a queen!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great movie. When you could actually see what was happening.
Totally gives me Disney vibes.
I think a common criticism with modern Alien movies is the characters, in this one yes I didn’t REALLY care about the side characters but I did kinda fear for rain and Andy’s survival since they’re siblings
That Disneycember logo is pretty funny though...
True😂😂😂
I was surprised to hear that other people didn't like seeing Ash from the fist movie in this one. His appearance was by far my favorite part of this movie.
What is this background music?
Drizzle to Downpour. Really good song.
REVIEW IRON WILL
Never thought I'd see the day where an Alien movie is part of the DisneyCember lineup, but I like it.
I for one didn't mind
SPOILER
the return of Ash, or an android that looked like the same guy, which I thought was intentionally off-puttingly creepy.
Details like that made the movie worth it for me, and kept it from being another soulless reboot/egacy sequel.
i stop caring after 3
I havent seen it, but it is being called the 3rd best Alien film made and the first good one since 1986 so I'll probably buy it.
Most hilarious thumbnail ever!
The thumbnail 😂
yeah was a serviceable movie with some gorgeous cinematography. The first 30 minutes was fantastic in its world building, beyond that though the callback tropes really distracted. The android was the best character imo
John Favreau’s : Chef
