  • We spend a quick weekend on Fyn and stay in a wonderful AirBnB just outside of Svendborg on the island of Tåsinge.
    We caught boats finishing the Silver Rudder race, explored Danmarks Museum for Lystsejlads, and walked around the shore of Thurø. Brisket had an absolute blast!! It was a nice and relaxing weekend.

    Those crates are highly collectable. My dad has quite a few and he keeps some of his vinyl records in them. They are called "Øl kasser" (beer crates). You can usually find them at second hand stores, thrift markets (loppe markeder) or even online. Some are more rare than others. The best thing would be to go to a second hand store or a thrift market - otherwise the crates can be very expensive. I know you are located on Sjælland, so I don't know the go to place there. But there's a store that I like to go visit in Vejle whenever I'm there, called "Fundstedet". So if you ever come to Vejle I'd recommend taking a look there.
    (Edit: there might be a place called "Blå Kors" on Sjælland, where you might be able to find some crates. I remember seeing some in the Blå Kors store in my hometown.)

    Nice to see you really enjoyed your stay in Svendborg. The SB crates are from the now closed down Svendborg Bryghus , or Svendborg Brewery. You really nailed the pronunciation of "hygge". Keep traveling and stay young.

    Really nice video, thanks - I guess Brisket just loves hearing the magic sound of his tiny feet galloping all over those echoing floor boards? 🤗
    Wow, pronouncing "hygge" exactly correct - I am really impressed 🤗
    Not very many English speaking folks have mastered that one yet, even though this word has recently been borrowed into British English ( after the success of several Danish TV series in Britain during the past decade ).
    It usually becomes pronounced [ hoog-ga ] or [ hug-gaa ] or similar instead in English (🙄), even though Old English actually did have this "Scandinavian" y-vowel - for instance in the word "sky" = cloud (!!!), which it still means in Danish etc.
    Or borrowed back into English, I should say, since OE did have the verb "hycgan", meaning "to think / reflect on things / recall", which was also the original meaning in Older Danish and Norwegian ( from Old Norse ).

    Tåsinge's pride, Valdemars Slot is worth a trip if/when you visit Svendborg & area again
    The place where Elvira Madigan and Sixten Sparre commited suicide is also worth a visit (beautiful walk in the woods)and their last resting place in Skt Jørgens churchyard...
    If you want to see a romantic movie, Elvira Madigan is a doozy!! 💕

    Joshua, Mirinda, Maya and Brisket. U make my every daily day complete. I adore u. Keep up the splendid work! I hope u stay here forever. And ps, Maya, force your friends to spreak danish to you, u already nailed the fluency, the grammer we couldnt care less about (ull get there eventually)! Get told in danish, reply in danish, and within a year, ull happily speak danish instead of english with your closest friends, trust me! (Sorry mom and dad, u are obviously doing insanely good as well, but your daughter is slamming it! As a saying in danish, "its hard to learn an old dog new tricks" its prolly gonna be a greater challange for u, but keep in mind, we dont care! Grammer or what not! Can u communicate, its good) It might sound offensive in it self calling u "old dogs", but thats not the case! U are doing brilliantly! Congratulations on the second module finished! I should go to bed, just got home from a party and its like 06.00, and i dont feel like im coming out the right way! xD (What i mean is that Maya is a sponge and she'll pick up the rest rly quick, if she kinda force her friends :P)

      We haven't done a video about our relationship yet though I guess we could some day! We got married super young (even by American standards). Josh had just turned 24 and I was 21. It's definitely not a path for everyone and people who get married so young often don't stay together. We have been very lucky though. We have been a team right from the start and have been together 23 years. He's the planner and I'm the runner (to get things) and we both enjoy and embrace those "roles" in our relationship. As for travel, we have always traveled and love doing that together. It also helps that we both love the same kind of travel (where you visit eleventy billion churches and museums wherever you go :D). Our honeymoon was to Egypt in the days before internet travel planning was really a thing. We decided if we could survive that we could survive anything! - M

    7:09 This is a beer box. It holds 50 standard 33 cl beer bottles. They were very heavy when full. SB most likely means Svenborg Bryggeri. They were replaced with plastic frames some time in my childhood. The new frames, still used, hold only 30 bottles. They are much easier to lift. I remember this well, being a grocer's son.

    It's not *that* much larger than the Golden Gate Bridge, you know. Doesn't it degrade to a mere dream eventually? I work there and I know the guard rails will hold - and then it's just a small hill on the motorway.

    Question for the live stream, Sunday evening:
    (This question is for all of you 🙂)
    What are your current long-term plans for staying in Denmark? Do you want to keep living here, or do you want to try another part of the world? Or maybe even move back to the States again?
    And for Maya too of course, when she moves out at some point, to start her own adult life and career?
    And it Maya wants to find a good place to rent when she does move out, make sure to be written up to several renting places. And do it sooner rather than later.
    The wait times can be very long in the greater Copenhagen area.
    Both for student housing and for normal apartments...

    You seem to struggle with the 24h clock. In Danish we'd say "klokken 20" so I think that you could just say "20 o'clock" in English and not sound too awkward. Anyway, people still use 12h format in daily speech in Denmark, but we use "om natten/morgenen" if it's AM and "om eftermiddagen/aftenen" when it's PM...
    Which gets me to think about what's most difficult to understand about AM/PM as a Dane when learning the system... Why does it go from 11AM to 12PM and vice versa? Then it's just easier to learn how to count to 23.
    Edit: my English teacher taught me to say good morning, before noon, good day, until 6, and good evening between 6 and bedtime, when it's good night. But what to say if you're out late and want to greet a passerby at 02:30? In Danish we just roll back and say good evening, until the sunrise comes.

    • @Bjowolf2

      It's act. from Latin -
      AM = Ante Meridiem ( before mid-day ),
      PM = Post Meridiem ( after / past (!) midday ).
      The "Danish" / Continental European ( and US military! 😅 ) system makes it a lot easier to figure out how long some activity will take, or when you will arrive, if the clock happens to pass midday during your activity or travel. ( just count on from 12 / noon - and then subract 12, if you absolutely need to 😉).
