Ladies, thank you so much for this informative lesson. I will check out my Asian market so I can try to cook this. I love the idea of “balancing” everything. Your culture is so wise in connecting food with health. Thank you both. I am amazed that there are no other seasonings that go into this soup.
Hi Keith, I'm so glad that you like this video! Yes, traditional Chinese culture is very profound. I'm still learning it every day. I hope you'll find all the ingredients. Best wishes! :)
Wood ear mushrooms can be found at the Asian store but its labeled as white fungus. I just bought some today at a Korean market and that's what it's called. You can make it as a salad mixed with seafood and veggies with sweet chili sauce and lime on it. Tastes delicious!
Used white fungus for the first time, and I love it! I added wonton broth, dried seaweed strips and the white fungus (both soaked and rinsed of course, and the white fungus trimmed), a bit of sliced veggies (green beans, carrots, onion, leek and chili pepperseeds), let it simmer for about 10 minutes and then at the end added wonton shrimps and let it simmer for another 3 minutes. Delicious!! I ate the whole pot in less than an hour, that's how good it is! Planning on making this daily, to help me loose a few pounds while still enjoying good food. :) Cheers.
I made this soup today. It’s alright. The flavour is subtle. The consistency reminds me of saliva, lol. It’s like a sweet saliva, lol. It almost made me gag a few times but after it sat awhile, it got cooler and it tasted better so I’m going to put the rest in the fridge and chill it. I’m still going to eat it because I made a huge pot and I don’t want it to go to waste, lol. I’m hoping the taste will grow on me, otherwise, whatever. I’ll keep eating it if I see any improvements in my beauty. Sometimes beauty is pain! 😂
Hi Cuties, I am Chinese Jamaican (Hakka) living in Miami (83 years old and hitting on the pretty girls (Hee hee!). Hello, could you please tell me if it is ok to use dehydrated dates? And would you just cook the dried dates in the pot or rehydrate them first? I thought you would know since your mom made this. Thank you for answering my question, I appreciate it...
You have to soak the dried dates before cooking. My mom soak the dried date for an hour before cooking. You can do some experiments on the dried dates too 😊
My mom makes this and I wanted to learn more about it and how its made exactly, thats what brought me to your video. So simple, and delicious I just had a bowl. Also really enjoyed your video. You explain things well and super cute.
I went to the supermarket where I've met a Chinese old man who told me to buy it. Then i bought it ( he helped me to choose the good ones and told me how to cook) . Very delicious ☺️

I was very impressed with your video presentation and went to my local Oriental market and purchased exactly the same ingredients....soaked overnight, cleaned exactly the same and cooked according to your very clear directions. It must be a cultural things...being a Westerner, my taste buds for 79 years have developed from varying flavor profiles. I tried 3 times to eat this soup, but there was no taste and the texture was most difficult for me to digest. I had such high hopes as I suffer with inflammation. Good luck to all those who are able to ingest this.
Meggie Meg Murphy, the texture is indeed peculiar but the taste can be adjusted. Have you tried incorporating a small quantity of cooked mushrooms into a smoothie or blending it into a hot chocolate ? It’s what I do with my daily teaspoon of turmeric + pepper (also anti-inflammatory) as I don’t like its flavour. I hope this message was helpful and finds you well and still trying to thrive on plants 🌱. Have a blessed day!
The Chinese lady is correct when she says White Wood Ear Mushroom in referring to Snow Fungus/White Fungus. It is not the most common name for it, but it is correct. Just like the most common name for Wood Ear Fungus is Black Fungus. The recipe is traditionally prepared with Chinese Rock Sugar; Chinese Rock Sugar is medicinal and commonplace in TCM for treating the lungs. The lungs have a powerful influence over the skin, so you can see the logic in its health being beneficial to maintaining the beauty of the skin.

I'm going to use this on top of my aging resistance to freak out youths at least 80 years from now. "That's right, I'm pushing 100, but I look like I'm 15. I'm a witch."
Hi... I was going through the comments to hopefully find something on how often to eat this soup. There's so many to go through. Can you specify please? How much per day, daily or times per week? Thank you!!!
I love this ...my grandpa always make this but since the pandemic I haven’t been able to meet him...and just buy it at my local uhm u know I dun know what its called in English 😅 its my fav and idk how my grandpa make it ...it taste like luo han guo
Suz N lol some people get confused. While in the west they’re called black fungus or snow fungus depending on their color, while in China specifically, they are known as wood ears when you take the direct translation from the character 木耳. It’s called wood ear because it’s shaped a little bit like a ear, and it grows on tree trunks and bark, making it known as “wood ear”
Snow fungus is also known by many names, such as white fungus, silver ear fungus, white wood ear fungus etc, so they're not wrong, but perhaps they could have been more specific in specifying the colour alongside as there also black fungus or black wood ear fungus avail in the markets. Anyway, the jujubes (red dates) can be boiled together from the very beginning but NOT the goji berries as goji berries are very tiny, which they will start splitting if boiled for too long.
Hi Suz, in Chinese, we generally call both the white and the black fungus mushrooms as 木耳(mu we). So the direct translation would be wood ear mushrooms. And in English, we also call the white fungus mushroom as snow fugus, snow ear, silver ear fungus, or white wood ear mushrooms. As to why I added the dried red dates and goji berries later. Here are my reasonings: if you add the dates and cook it for too long. The dates will have a sour taste. So it’s best not to cook them for more than 20 mins. As for the goqi berries, you barely need to cook them. If you cook them for too long, you will lose its nutrition.
Hi Cici and Mia, where do you get the snow fungus mushroom I love the video, your explanation of Ying and Yang, and all the benefits of Chinese medicine.
Sorry, but looking for this mushroom on Amazon. It looked like the Cauliflower Mushroom that is being sold. Their wood ear mushroom looked black and white, which does not look like what you are using. Can you help clarify on this?
This is not wood ear fungus, to be specific it is called. Tremella fuciformis. or commonly known as anyone of these name: snow fungus, snow ear, silver ear fungus, and white jelly mushroom. You can use it to cook like this dish . or make a salad out of it, it is also good .
One quick question. After simmering for 45 minutes, did you leave it on low heat when you added the dates and berries? I didn't see you turn the heat back up but I was just wanting to make sure.
After the water is at its boiling point, I turned it to low heat the entire time. That includes the time I added the red dates and the goji berries. :)
+CiCi Li Thank you very much! My girlfriend says the only thing she missed about China was the food. So I started watching your videos and cooking for her. Now we often watch your videos and cook together a lot and are closer than ever. Thank You So Much!
@@CiCiLi The soup came out great! The only thing is my red dates were huge, maybe 2 or 3x bigger than what you used and it made the soup sweet enough that I didn't really need to add honey. But I enjoyed it very much. Thanks!
Oohh I know it know, why does this dessert drink only found in chinese people market in indonesia n in singapore,.hmmmm. I love that taste, I want to try to making it as soon as possible. Thx for the menu. 😊
Now in China they have the instant packet one just add in hot water for few minutes then can you can it. I just wonder whether it’s safe to eat the instant one?

Yes. Herbs and spice are added to traditional Chinese food. The meat and vegetable are eaten I sort of a balance too. Completely different from the take out ones lol. But hey, I can have some cravings sometime right?
This looks great to try. I researched each and the goji berry seems to cause leaky gut syndrome? Can omit? Where did you purchase your cute pot from also please?
Goji berries contain betaine (9). Betaine could also be used to induce menstruation and abortion. The berries also have an estrogen-mimicking effect. Hence, they must not be used by pregnant or lactating women or anyone with diseases sensitive to estrogen. Goji berries are rich in a chemical compound that increases the risk of a digestive syndrome condition called 'leaky gut'. How to remove lectins from goji berries. The best methods is to drain and rinse after soaking then cook over high heat for 15 minutes. You can then reduce the temperature for the remains cooking time. Pressure cooking is also an effective way to reduce legume lectin levels.
Thank you for the question! While both black wood ear mushrooms and snow fungus share some similar benefits like promoting digestive health due to their high fiber content, they are not exactly the same and may have slightly different specific health advantages, with snow fungus often being associated more with moisturizing and cooling properties while wood ear mushrooms may have a stronger focus on immune support and cholesterol management.
I teach you more simple... get Koki or kochi 1/2 cup (just like red beads) & 15 dry dates wash 2 times soak them 20 minutes and boil them without honey it has natural sweet taste. You can add 1 bag Jasmine tea and boil take hot its relaxing and keeps your face skin smooth and makes you look young. You can eat kochi and the dates too.
If you like soup you can try 5 bags of Jasmine tea bag boil with half chicken and a small ginger boil them together. It is a pleasant light Chicken soup. You can add Kochi or do not add its okay. But if you care to look younger add a big tea soup of kochi boil together till the chicken is soft and tender.
