Joyce was born a truly talented actress, comedienne, story-teller, a really funny lady, and more than likely still entertaining the hundreds of actors/actresses who have left this world with her wit, and joined up with the many other funny ladies who passed away too early, but we will never forget them and their talents.
In these fractious times how refreshing to see someone who instantly lights up the day and brings a smile to audiences whether Theatre,Radio,Television or Film. Such a lovely lady.
A wonderful talent and a genuinely lovely lady. She had an amazing career and was much-loved by all who knew and worked with her. For me, she'll always be PC Ruby Gates in the St Trinian's films 📼. She left us too soon but she's never forgotten Thanks for the memories m' lady ❤ 😊
Videos like this are part of the magic of the internet which I sometimes think of as the electric mist. I have learned languages, math, history, literature and about music here but today I revisit an actress I saw in the cinema when I was a small boy in Notting Hill Gate.
Dear Joyce Grenville, I knew of you and saw you many times on the television but...... I now really know you and wished I knew you more, you are so special and must never be forgotten, God Bless.
@@QueenBee-gx4rp I would watch the old movies when I was a child and was so disappointed when I was told that I couldn't go to school there. I liked Ruby Gates. She was so sweet.
Great emotional work too. Catch 'First Flight' when her character looks directly at the camera and says: 'They're there'. Simple, layered and devastating.
I've grown up loving Joyce. The nursery school sketches still crack me up, 'George, don't do that!'. She was very musical and displayed her broad knowledge on Steve Race's 'My Music'. Also, she was brilliant in the St Trinians films!
She was a genius. Sadly for us, a far too under-used genius. She is so funny, I think it is because she is so genuine and unaffected, as well as talented. Brilliant, and that very rarest and most valuable of all things these days, a gentle-lady. If anybody broke the mould it was Joyce Grenfell.
So Sir David Attenborough is not only wise where the animal kingdom is concerned - how brilliantly perspicacious of him to see the great Joyce Grenfell's potential. Wonderful documentary - thanks for posting.
Succinctly put, Mr Finklestein. I would add, that whilst not a conventional beauty, the backdrop photograph of Joyce whilst David Attenborough is speaking, shows how truly beautiful the lady was - both aesthetically, but more significantly, within. Maureen Lipman is most apposite in stating that Ms Grenfell had "gravitas" - then, as now, it is a personal quality one rarely sees.
When I was young my Mother took me to see Joyce Grenfell. I loved her, she could bring her characters alive. The ones especially vivid were the kindergarten teacher with her "George......Don't do That!", a sketch called Tuesdays & most specially the famous musician's wife. It was a marvellous experience.
Adorable next door neighbour of impeccable pedigree. Whimsical, lighthearted and slightly distracted. Oh, where have these paragons of innocence and virtue gone, I wonder ... ? Obviously they’re still here, because I’m one of them. Nice to know, isn’t it.
I just happened upon this and I'm so grateful. I'm an American, but British comedy and drama are my favorite. I did not know of Joyce Grenfell but I can see so many other British actresses and actors in her. I watched entire video. She seemed to be a lovely person. I'll definitely continue following her. Thank you so much!
Joyce, I must say I had such a good time watching you. Your presence is still with us and your love of life and of people is so refreshing to see, especially during these times of mean-spiritedness by so many. I'm so glad I discovered you here on UA-cam. What a delightful and beautiful woman you were. Truly!
A Joyce Grenfell song, sketch or monologue will always brighten the day. National treasure is a very overused term, but entirely deserved for this much missed lady.
The mark of truly great comedy, isn’t how much it can make you laugh. It’s wether or not it can make you cry. At 42.32 I burst into tears, and wept like a baby. Victoria Wood could do it. The trick is to do it sparingly. Joyce did it very occasionally. But she did it better than anyone.
Thank you for the introduction! I'm a Yank unfamiliar with her and look forward to learning more. So far, the majority of favourite t.v. shows are from the U.K. :-}
Lovely and talented...! What natural elegance. Today, these qualities are not needed. One just needs to know which part of your clothes to take off. I’m so glad she passed her talent to entertain us!
She is quite brilliant.. Have a look for 'George don't do that', set in a nursery.. You can almost imagine all the little ones sitting in front of her..
I have just been introduced to Joyce via a link from Canterbury Cathedral morning prayers online. She reminds of of the brilliance of Miranda Hart. Cincinnati Ohio sends best wishes. February 2021.
Superlative documentary of my all-time favourite comedienne - no-one came close in my experience, & the very recognisable caricatures she played - a plethora of mannerisms that might be a distant aunt or cousin, each redolent of (at least) one person you knew, & thereby making the portrayal all the more amusing. A fine individual, gracious throughout - the true Mistress of the Preamble - wonderful !! :D
Les Reed - Absolutely, I agree. Some of the people come on You Tube and haven't a clue about the subject matter. Why are they on here if they don't like it. There are also some horrible, shitty trolls on You Tube as well. Why do these service providers allow that type.
Can anyone help. Years ago Joyce performed the most moving monologue in which she was the wife of an internationally famous singer (if I remember). She was being interviewed in the monologue by an unheard interviewer and you had to infer what she was being asked by her answers. The interviewer seemed to make many references to women that her husband had met professionally while abroad, inferring that there was more than just performing in these friendships. The monologue closes with Joyce saying quietly, 'Ah yes, but he always came back to me'.
I’m lm so excited to see this video. Over 50 years ago I lived in Washington D C for a few years. I used to like going to the Georgetown theater when they showed British films. Particularly mother St. Trinians series and and a series about doctors. Brought back great memories. Still like British humor. Thanks
Ronnie Barker as "Arkwright" parodied the Church sketch "Hymn" in his wonderful sitcom "Open All Hours" some years later. It went to show that even the great comedians had greater to teach them.
YOU-Tube Enjoyment here on tap again at the movement of the mouse. This actress and writer was "Supreme" in A'Take-Off" the-."English: Stiff Upper Lip" & ":Our Daft Ways" !
I suppose when I was young Joyce Grenfell did not seem terribly trendy but now , looking back she seems rather sweet , and funny - and attractive too , in these days of cosmetic enhancement where you don’t really know what anyone actually looks like .
wonderfull artist... of the days of the cabarets....true to herself and true to others. Very English though, but as a French woman, i love her. So much talent. Pity... Can one translate it and offer it to foreign audiences ? I can do the french texts (from previous knowledge/capacity) Who can do others...? Obviously, some "jokes" have no translation.
Not just the great comedy that should be remembered, but the humanity and greatness of heart. Thanks, this was a moving film and one to be cherished.

One of a kind. Such warmth, wit, and sharp observation of humanity. Totally uplifting.
A lovely tribute. I wish I had said that, so I'll just give it a "thumbs up".

All the way through this documentary I was hoping against hope you would play "Stately as a Galleon" and you did ! Delightful!
So sad that she died so early, great comedic and acting talent.
In these fractious times how refreshing to see someone who instantly lights up the day and brings a smile to audiences whether Theatre,Radio,Television or Film. Such a lovely lady.

Joyce Grenfell at the Coronet? Sounds like heaven

Robert Hughes Beautifully said. As an American who thought she was wonderful, I agree. I plan to rewatch the movies mentioned here.

Right back to my childhood, an old friend
"Double damask nipper-dapkins..."
Her timing and delivery were impeccable.
Joyce was just the best!
she was unique! unforgettable warm original Joyce Grenfell
Fantastic - big thank you.
I love Joyce Grenfell. I remember when she died. It was so sad. We lost two legends in 1980, Joyce, John Lennon and Peter Sellers.

Why visit the page, then, as there's nothing here that is "unlikeable" to Joyce fans?
Her singing and her choice of songs leave something to be desired.

She was wonderful
I do hope I get it right..Got me, I almost cried 😢 what a talented lady ❤
Her book of letters Darling Ma is absolutely brilliant. A true inspiration.
Amazing woman! One of the best gifts is to make people laugh. She did it so well. She reminds me of Olivia Colman!
Her human depth speaks to all of us !!
Thank you very much for sharing.

Thank you for this - always loved her.
This is a guilty crush of mine, the secret is undoubtedly that long forgotten C-word... 'Charm'! It works on us chaps as well you know. 🎯
I admire very few performers above Joyce Grenfell...only perhaps Victoria Wood. Such brilliance!
Wonderful Joyce
The good old days... Now look at it..
The female Terry-Thomas? Well, anyway, when they were acting together it was just perfect.

I remember it well. I think the husband was a pianist.
Always loved her nursery school monologues.
Stately as a galleon- a wonderful observer of how funny people are if you look closely with a positive eye
Now I've found out that she was 3/4 American as James Roose-Evans explained. Interesting point.
wonderful xx
One of the best ⚘
Like the great Margaret Rutherford (shown in a couple of the film clips) Joyce was a unique talent.

Helen Mirren too.
Don't you mean Julie Andrews ?
