Two additions according to my knowledge: 1. Only Synology M.2 NVME drives can be used for the hard drive pool. If you use third party NVME, these drives can only be used as cache drives. 2. Programs like Plex will be a problem on the Ryzen CPU as the iGPU does not support HEVC transcoding. The iGPU on the Celeron does, however. Anyhow, I still would buy the current DS7xx series for future-proofness.
Thanks for the additional info on the M.2 NVME drives and information regarding the iGPU. I'll pin your comment so others can see the info you provided as well.
@@digital_aloha Thanks, I basically extracted that information from a German tech website, which also tested these units. So the NVME must be on the list of supported drives. Maybe some Seagate or Western Digitial drive is on the supported drive list. But I don't know of any at the moment.
@@digital_aloha I don’t have any but I see loads of complains about plex being impacted by missing integrated graphics. So trying to figure it out before I buy a 723+ or 923+.
if i only want a NAS for synology photos with video playback from videos backed up form an iPhone, if that is the only purpose for the NAS which would you recommend?
Thanks for this video. I have 2 questions regarding memory upgrade: 1- On the 224+, I saw other videos stating that the max memory permitted is 6 Gb (2Gb onboard + 4 GB). When you put a 16 Gb chip, does the system recognize and use the full 18 Gb (2Gb on board + 16 Gb) or only 6 Gb? On the 723+ you recommend non ECC memory. Does this give the same speed as ECC memory?
The DS723+ does have a higher power consumption. Check out Synology's comparision for more details -> www.synology.com/en-us/products/compare/DS224+/DS723+.
I went with UGreen 4 bay, way better hardware and i'm not self hosting the planet just plex and pihole. I rather have current hardware then 2010 hardware that synology offers no matter how many apps their software offer lol

How do get around using plex without issues on 723+?
@@Amsfxyz What are the specific issues you are having with plex on the DS723+?

Good comparison video. Thanks
You're welcome!! Glad to hear that the video was helpful.
How has performance been on the DS224 with the addition of 16GB memory? I am thinking about upgrading.
The memory makes a huge difference on a DS224+. I highly recommend upgrading the memory.
What memory did you go with?

Can we connect USB HD to the USB port of Synology DS224 to extend the storage capacity?
Yes, you can definitely extend storage capacity with an external USB HD.
What is the difference in power consumption?
The DS723+ does have a higher power consumption. Check out Synology's comparision for more details -> www.synology.com/en-us/products/compare/DS224+/DS723+.
is it possible to make a RAID10 between 2xNVME and 2xHDD/SSD? All disks are the same size.

But not better Software.
