@@begreater226 he told her a story that the Vikings stole all they beautiful women and outs almost like he’s saying it to her as he choses her . It definitely was planned
@@lindaramirez1852 Think about the tapestry. It starts off with death. I have a suspicion her family were sacrificed by Pele. If not by him directly, then by pushing Dani's sister to commit murder suicide. Everything was planned.
To me, this movie was about how vulnerable loneliness and fear makes people. That’s why Dani was easily manipulated by Pelle and the ending showed her going off the deep end and getting completely brainwashed by the cult.
I love the interpretation. I kinda felt the same. I did find the directors interpretation cool though. Basically, he said this is a "family movie". Dani lost one family (her biological one), was "taken in" by another one that treated her poorly (horrible bf & his friends), then eventually finds her place within the cult (her new family). No one in her life understands her, nor do they truly care. But the cult does. The moment where all the women are crying with her, is a real cult tactic called Mirroring. It's meant to make one feel as important and as seen as possible. I found that interesting.
@Rusty Kinks Thats literally the explanation from the director. It's meant to be twisted. Also, those were not her friends. That's made perfectly clear from the start of the movie. They are her bfs friends & they convince him to allow her to come, only because she just lost her entire family. They also didn't "frame" her bf. It's explained that they use an outsider every year to impregnate one of their women to keep a certain bloodline going, as well as to grow their peoples. They were using him & she happened to see it happening. Thats also explained by the director to really just be a lucky coincidence that she saw it. She was broken enough by that point, he was probably gonna die either way.
yes i agree, i‘ve seen people say you have to be insane or stupid to feel brainwashed by the movie/ending,,, but i think its all about psychological/emotional strength of the moment, if Dani wasnt lonely and traumatised, she wouldn’t have been so brainwashed by this cult.....
@@LeFrogCage She was cast as the lead by an artistic production company. This ain't no Marvel movie filled with familiar pretty faces. Florence Pugh is an artist, not a Hollywood product.
As a Swedish person I’d like to say that when they enter the village everyone gets treated with a “welcome” yet Danny gets treated with “welcome home” probably meaning that pele wanted Danny to come and had planned this weeks in advance
Perhaps the worst thing here is that people went out of this movie thinking it was a genuinely happy ending. They were manipulated into believing that Dani got a happy ending when in fact she's trapped for life
I mean she sort of did. It's just not a traditional happy ending. None of the cultists are there against their will. In fact, by their rules Dany would leave the compound since she is in the summer of her life (mid-summer). She genuinely wanted to stay in the cult and found a place where she could belong. It's a fucked up place, but her life is fucked up.
@@Jooooger it's a cult that brainwashes people who are lonely and (feeling like they're) left all alone in the world. her vulnerability is what made her an easy target for the cult leaders and first off the man who brought them all to sweden. it was a tactically woven plan and dani is sadly not the first or the last victim
@@pazhdiskova1030 Sure, I agree with all that except Dani's victimhood. In fact, as May Queen she was the most empowered she has ever been, hence the smile at the end. @@enagrubesic6080 who says that Pelle didn't drug her and made it appear like suicide? It seems he specifically chose Dani way before they were in Sweden
I think the fact that they barely question where their friends went when they start disappearing is very meaningful to why the cult managed to get them so easily. It‘s obvious that Christian doesn‘t particularly care about Dani, but you can see that the whole group actually doesn‘t care about each other, which is contrasted by how united the Hårga are and how much they seem to care for Dani. The whole conflict of the movie is really just possible because no one cares about anyone.
It makes it even worse that even if no one would offend the villagers (Mark not peeing on the tree, Josh not sneaking inside the temple) they would still be sacrificed since the ceremony required 4 outsiders anyway.
"He gives in and makes the biggest mistake of his life", the girl takes off her face, which was a mask to reveal that she's actually Chris Hansen, and this whole commune was just a ruse to catch a predator.
The thing is, literally anyone can be manipulated into a cult no matter how strong your will is or if you think that you would recognize every sign. So while we’re thinking “me personally, I would have noticed this and started doing this”, in reality the characters were probably experiencing a lot of cultural shock and were disoriented from all the drugs and rituals. When they’re feeling so confused, the cult members swoop in and comfort them. Honestly unless you’re a Sherlock Holmes cult expert I don’t think Midsommar is survivable.
True, but that only applies if you respect foreign cultures. So, in theory, if you didn’t give a flying fuck about culture and traditions, you’d probably pick up on just about every red flag and/or strange occurrence in the village. Also also, you’d have to be pretty stupid to accept any unknown substance from anyone in an isolated/unmodernized village.
I think the fact the group of "friends" were each assholes in general and to each other is what led to their downfall. If ANY of the men (apart from simon) showed a crumb of concern for their fellow peer, they would have noticed sketchy things was earlier in my opinion. Mark just wanted to bang a foreigner, and christian and josh were too focused on one-upping the other to pay attention to what was actually going on.

You don't beat Midsomar. Just make sure you're crowned as the May Queen. Then, when you're off in another country to recruit more community members/sacrificial victims, just disappear to stay there and don't return to the community.
Except that it is implied the festivities are not over yet at the end of the movie (they should take 9 days). So... what is in store for the May Queen? Maybe we should not find that out.
@@mrs7195 we can't say that for sure, cause time was so messed up because of the sun that we can't actually say how many days passed since they arrived. I personally agree with the theory that every day one person is killed, as there are 9 sacrifices and 9 days of festivity, and, since nobody is killed on the first day, they kill the two elders on the second one, Simon on the third, Connie on the fourth, Mark on the fifth, Josh on the sixth and the other villages on the following days.

Nah you should do drugs (but probably not if you’re struggling psychologically like Dani is.) And also, Sweden in real life sounds like a lovely place.
I'm low-key disturbed when people say 'good for her' at the end of the movie. They do realize that Dani's toxic boyfriend just got replaced by an even worse toxic community, right?

@@Nexils tbh yeah he is a selfish prick. I think its still disturbing how he screwed that girl she was probably like 16 or 17 idk that makes me uncomfortable af
Yeah, I feel like people are really missing the point if they’re happy for Dani at the end. Not merely has she completely submitted to the twisted culture, traditions, and morality of the Hårga, she is also 100% culpable for the death of Christian. He was drugged and manipulated into the act that she saw. Recall too that she and Pelle shared a deep kiss before any of that, yet for Christian’s betrayal, she allows him to be killed. Ultimately, she became as bad as her sister, murdering Chris, and I don’t think her mind could recover from that. So now she’ll either be sacrificed in the remaining six days of the festival (where was last year’s may queen?) or become Pelle’s wife and have all the kids the group needs to add new genetics. She’s now a prisoner both of the Hårga and of the choices she made - she can never go back to the real world.
@@orangejuiceking7173 - Your issue is that he had sex with her, when he was drugged and manipulated into it? Her smile at the end reminded me of scenes in which the demon wins and finally takes possession of its host. In both this cult movie and possession movies they choose vulnerable hosts ripe from trauma. It really drives home that much of horror is a metaphor for things humans are already doing to each other.

Anyone noticed how Dani never got to go past the in denial stage of grief? Everytime family is mentioned she runs away and cries. When Pelle talked to her about his parents, she kept denying that she was upset about what happened to hers. I think that contributes so much to her trauma and why she breaks down when she's reminded of her family. All she needed was time and someone to be actually be there and Christian neglected to do that. I mean yeah he was there but it's clear that he's drifting away from her.
i don’t think that she “realized that that’s where she belongs”, i think she finally cracked. we can see a similar example in the Joker Movie when he’s on TV and realizes that his favourite host doesn’t respect him, just like everyone else. you can see him crack when he finally realizes that he’s going to kill him as revenge. Dani had a very similar moment in the last scene. i’ve seen so many people say “she’s finally at piece” or “she’s finally happy” but i think that she’s quite the opposite, and that that was actually her breaking point to where she couldn’t return.
Just like with "Heriditary" (SPOILERS!!)- the mom "snapped" when the dad suddenly spontaneously combusted, the way Toni Collete's expression just collasped- total blank, brilliant acting- it was like her brain/her pysche just said "enough!! It was more because Pelle had already set his sights on them as a group, and Dani in particular. He was controlling things all along, possibly even suggesting the thesis subject.
The place didn't seem to be particularly well guarded. It seemed like a pretty easy thing to just sneak out of bed at night, exit through the wooden gate, and trek back the way you came in. Another important thing is once realizing that you're in the midst of a cult, to just play along and not make a scene about leaving like the British couple did.
I'm sure it was guarded because they have to sacrifice atleast 4 outsiders, there's no way they're not keeping an eye on them, especially after the cliff jumping.
when josh went to take photos of the sacred texts at night it looked like no one was there but then he got killed pretty immediatly so to me that says they are always watching
Here’s my 2 step plan to beat midsomar Step 1 do some research from home by asking the friend who is from there and look up the history of the culture Step 2 realize that you are not a field anthropologist and just write your paper from home.

Does anyone actually think that Chris was going to leave there alive? Even if she didn't pick him to die, are they really going to say, "Thank you for visiting our death cult! Please don't tell anyone that we murdered all of your friends. Have a safe trip back!"
They probably would have found a way to convince him to stay, like by having him marry Maya or pressure him to stay for the baby he just helped create.

Putting Danni in a psych ward after their loved one dies is not actually a good idea. If someone did that to me after my parent died I would be so upset. That's a time where you need to be with loved ones to support you instead of being with strangers.
... Her loved ones were dead, though. That's the point. He had already fallen out of love with her and was coming to terms with it, but stayed with her because he didn't want to add to her grief. Honestly, I've been in a psych ward. The stability and dialogue really can help - and unlike loved ones who don't know effective ways to help you get over your grief, psychologists at least have a few proven methods to approach the situation from. My mom even left me there without actually telling me I'd be staying there. Yeah, I was angry for the first week or two, but I got over it. Sometimes this sort of stuff is necessary for growth.

Pelle brought Danni because she is prime cult material right now. She is lost and alone. He brings her into a community that calls itself a family that is built off of sacrifice (ie the elderly killing themselves), feeling each other’s pain (the community crying along with individuals echoing their pain), and support. They love bomb her to make her feel welcomed and supported. She finally got some sort of control in her life when she got to chose who was sacrificed and to stay.
Yup no one talks about Dani being the perfect cut for the cult. That makes the couch conversation they jad before leaving for Sweden creeper when he assures her how happy he is that she is joining her, he knew he had a recruit.
I mean honestly, the part I disagree with the least is the elderly sacrifice. That just makes sense in a community without access to tons of medical equipment to support elderly peoples various medical conditions as they age. 75 is a pretty decent age I think most ppl would have had time to come to peace with it and would want to go out on their own terms.
i always took her laughing at the end to be from the mental stress and trying to cope with the dichotomy of losing everyone she loves and then realizing the kind of power she's holding
I think what disturbed me the most in this movie was how Christian was raped. I understand he's a shitty guy who eventually wanted to pursue the young girl, but he didn't. He was drugged heavily and forced into doing it. It's sad how a lot of people see this as cheating when it's actually rape.
people don't seem to realize that another form of rape is the victim being drugged up and not being sober enough to consent because they're not in the right state of mind at all. which is what happened to christian. and then how society treats sexual assault cases where the victim is a guy. it's really sad.
I read a comment somewhere that'll clear this up. Yes, Pelle lead all of his friends to slaughter, but I don't think he had any ill intentions. That's just how he was raised, so he didn't know any better. I'm NOT saying that excuses his actions, but this is just looking at it in a different angle, ig.

As I recall, and I'm nitpicking here, the "Blood Eagle" was not a sacrifice to Odin, but a cruel execution for criminals. Sacrifices to Odin were made by hanging people from trees, to mimic Odin's own hanging.
Yah there’s a bit of inconsistencies he mentions. He included a scene of Ragnar being thrown into a pit of snakes but we all know it wasn’t done by the Vikings nor was Ragnar a human sacrifice… lol

“And that is what will set off the chain in getting him and his friends killed. This is how to beat Cinema Summary’s, first I need to say is that you can’t.”
I think that people forget that sometimes fear and survival instinct is really different for everybody. And seeing something so shocking early on can be used as a great way to divide and seek out who can be manipulated to stay forever. People don't usually have the time to think straight and realise they should act convincingly that they are okay and make a run for it when nobody is checking. Which actually could take a lot of time.
I love how you don't really see much violence in this movie, cause the true horror, imo , is how these people really didn't care much about each other. Everything's white and a lot of stuff happens in daylight, almost as to focus on how nobody cares when someone goes missing. The way they don't react and stand together is truly disturbing.
It’s to highlight the contrast between a all for one village vs the western society where everyone is just looking out for themselves and their complete lack of care and apathy for anyone else This is especially shown through Christian’s lack of consideration for not only his gfs feelings but also for the fact he’s going to basically steal his friend’s thesis idea with zero concern for what a dick move that is The complete lack of care mark shows as a GUEST for the environment he’s in and how he can’t seem to understand what he did wrong because of his great sense of entitlement to never having to care about anyone until now Also the entitlement shown in the black guys part and how he was given a strict No and how he can’t seem to understand boundaries which is apparently a common thing in our very narcissistic society Yes the hagra might be completely fucked up with their torture and killing shit but this is a festival that happens once every 90 years and I have to wonder, if the movie had taken place during a normal summer would the hagra be painted in a more positive light ? Maybe they are not so evil and barbaric maybe they just seem to understand the necessity for a “purge” in order to keep their way of life functional , everyone needs an outlet for their demons and western culture is full of that yet it’s painted as normal and not that big of a deal yet I’m sure in another time period it’ll be looked at as a fucked up way of life

One of my favorite "horror" movies. No monster that we all know doesn't exist but a bunch of brainwashed people. Bright colours and a weird vibe the whole movie long.
I think it’s interesting how Pelle was studying anthropology. He was studying American society as an observer. It’s a great way to put space between assimilation by researching a culture. Whereas Josh and later Christian approached the cult as a sideshow curiosity that would make a good thesis. Josh did start out with good intentions and knew way more about the culture than Christian but as soon as it got crazy he was all about exploiting the cult for recognition.

We (in sweden) have a lot of this kind of architecthure in older cities and villages still! It isn't quite that packed with symbolism, but it's pretty when you're driving on a countryside ^^
At the very end, the villagers inside the burning house are given the "Feel No Pain, Feel No Fear" flowers and I love that the entire trust of the cult is betrayed in the final moments. The "no pain" guy starts to burn and scream and the "no fear" guy has the scariest look on his face. This helps me understand both sides of the narrative. From Dani's perspective you're brainwashed into thinking the cult is life. With these last few shots on the villagers who were fully brainwashed into sacrificing themselves, told they would go in peace and then, don't. So the villagers realize this was all bullsh*t from the start. But only moments before they die (horribly) and only the elders know/believe the scam
I think that the reason people are so divided on whether Danni has a happy ending is because she's brainwashed into thinking this is her happy ending. She might believe it herself, but on the outside we can see how twisted it really is.
I think it's also mostly cause we are shown how lonely her life was that made the whole cult thing more bearable than surviving because in the end, she's got no one to run to. Some people collectively believed it is better to be brainwashed into a community than see her already tragic life ends in more tragedy.
In my humble opinion I think people think she had a happy ending because she’s smiling at the end of movie but to me this smile isn’t happiness but a broken woman.
The May Queen dance is won by being the last one standing. This means the cult could easily fix it so Dani 'wins'. Dani is also drugged before the dance and is therefore not able to tell if her win is legitimate or not. This entire thing was orchestrated by the cult via Pelle. Pelle knew this was a dysfunctional group of friends. He knew Dani and Christian had a dysfunctional relationship. He knew Dani suffered an immense loss AND he knew she was having panic attacks since she had one right in front of him. We see Pelle manipulating her on multiple occasions. We see Dani drugged on multiple occasions. Given all that, it blows my mind that people think that ending is happy, or that Dani decided anything, or that Dani is smiling because she feels she's better off. You think they stopped the carriage within hearing distance of the mating ritual by accident? Come on. This whole thing was carefully planned. The only thing the cult couldn't control was if Dani went to Sweden. Once that decision was made Dani was never coming back because you can be sure Pelle told them everything about her as soon as they arrived. I'm assuming they don't use phones or Pelle could have told them sooner than that.
Agree! And it’ll be stupid to think Dani is living happily ever after with the cult. They need kids, and she is brought there for that reason. She might be drugged/forced to have babies soon after. There is also a high chance she can be picked as sacrifice in other rituals. And remember about the baby that is being raised by the community? What happened to the baby’s parents? Similar to what could have happened to Pelle’s parents. They died in a fire; was that a sacrificial ritual too? She has no control with her life, it’s the Harga that controls her.
3:55 as an artist myself I can say that he probably did that in at least two minutes and at most five minutes. Stuff like that doesn't take long to do and is possible to do it on a blanket.
I feel it is important to mention that the blood eagle (the ribs getting pulled out the back) wasn’t a sacrificial rite, but a type of execution. It was meant to be a symbol of revenge
yes! it shows that she finally cracked and has gone insane. so insane, that even after all that she’s seen and all the trauma she has built, she will push it all aside because she will stay with the cult
as someone who has been in a cult i just agree with everything on this video. i hope this movie helps to spread awareness about cults, they might not get famous or sacrifice people exaclty like that, but all of them are deadly anyways.

IM EARLY AS HELL DAWG
hello master some guy
I found that interesting.
yes, if people are scared they are more easily controlled
what your saying is basic 101 how to recruit people into a cult. Literally what real life cults do to get people to join and stay in their cults.

I’ve done lots of psychedelics so I would probably be able to stay level headed
I’m willing to bet a people hater like Brock lesnar can’t be swayed into a cult.

@@willow9912 sweden creeper ahaha
Plot twist: Pelle killed the family
I mean honestly, the part I disagree with the least is the elderly sacrifice. That just makes sense in a community without access to tons of medical equipment to support elderly peoples various medical conditions as they age. 75 is a pretty decent age I think most ppl would have had time to come to peace with it and would want to go out on their own terms.

I think what disturbed me the most in this movie was how Christian was raped.
I understand he's a shitty guy who eventually wanted to pursue the young girl, but he didn't. He was drugged heavily and forced into doing it.
It's sad how a lot of people see this as cheating when it's actually rape.
Goes to show not only how much the Hårga manipulated the characters, but also the audience. I also can't believe people think it's his fault
I think the issue is people not knowing how the drug works.
people don't seem to realize that another form of rape is the victim being drugged up and not being sober enough to consent because they're not in the right state of mind at all. which is what happened to christian. and then how society treats sexual assault cases where the victim is a guy. it's really sad.

Which actually could take a lot of time.
i love the way this movie is coloured, it shows horror movies don't have to be dark with gloomy colours
I remember the interviews for this and that was totally a focal point for the design
I love how you don't really see much violence in this movie, cause the true horror, imo , is how these people really didn't care much about each other. Everything's white and a lot of stuff happens in daylight, almost as to focus on how nobody cares when someone goes missing. The way they don't react and stand together is truly disturbing.
It’s to highlight the contrast between a all for one village vs the western society where everyone is just looking out for themselves and their complete lack of care and apathy for anyone else
This is especially shown through Christian’s lack of consideration for not only his gfs feelings but also for the fact he’s going to basically steal his friend’s thesis idea with zero concern for what a dick move that is
The complete lack of care mark shows as a GUEST for the environment he’s in and how he can’t seem to understand what he did wrong because of his great sense of entitlement to never having to care about anyone until now
Also the entitlement shown in the black guys part and how he was given a strict No and how he can’t seem to understand boundaries which is apparently a common thing in our very narcissistic society

I think the smile at the end is haunting as she’s been brainwashed by the cult
She finally snapped!
yes! it shows that she finally cracked and has gone insane. so insane, that even after all that she’s seen and all the trauma she has built, she will push it all aside because she will stay with the cult
