    To me, this movie was about how vulnerable loneliness and fear makes people. That’s why Dani was easily manipulated by Pelle and the ending showed her going off the deep end and getting completely brainwashed by the cult.

    • @peachyqueen4399
      @peachyqueen4399 3 роки тому +382

      I love the interpretation. I kinda felt the same. I did find the directors interpretation cool though. Basically, he said this is a "family movie". Dani lost one family (her biological one), was "taken in" by another one that treated her poorly (horrible bf & his friends), then eventually finds her place within the cult (her new family). No one in her life understands her, nor do they truly care. But the cult does. The moment where all the women are crying with her, is a real cult tactic called Mirroring. It's meant to make one feel as important and as seen as possible. I found that interesting.

    • @peachyqueen4399
      @peachyqueen4399 3 роки тому +31

      @Rusty Kinks Thats literally the explanation from the director. It's meant to be twisted. Also, those were not her friends. That's made perfectly clear from the start of the movie. They are her bfs friends & they convince him to allow her to come, only because she just lost her entire family. They also didn't "frame" her bf. It's explained that they use an outsider every year to impregnate one of their women to keep a certain bloodline going, as well as to grow their peoples. They were using him & she happened to see it happening. Thats also explained by the director to really just be a lucky coincidence that she saw it. She was broken enough by that point, he was probably gonna die either way.

      I mean she sort of did. It's just not a traditional happy ending. None of the cultists are there against their will. In fact, by their rules Dany would leave the compound since she is in the summer of her life (mid-summer). She genuinely wanted to stay in the cult and found a place where she could belong. I think the fact that they barely question where their friends went when they start disappearing is very meaningful to why the cult managed to get them so easily. It‘s obvious that Christian doesn‘t particularly care about Dani, but you can see that the whole group actually doesn‘t care about each other, which is contrasted by how united the Hårga are and how much they seem to care for Dani. The whole conflict of the movie is really just possible because no one cares about anyone.

    The thing is, literally anyone can be manipulated into a cult no matter how strong your will is or if you think that you would recognize every sign. So while we’re thinking “me personally, I would have noticed this and started doing this”, in reality the characters were probably experiencing a lot of cultural shock and were disoriented from all the drugs and rituals. When they’re feeling so confused, the cult members swoop in and comfort them. Honestly unless you’re a Sherlock Holmes cult expert I don’t think Midsommar is survivable.

    • @cic1470
      @cic1470 Рік тому +516

      True, but that only applies if you respect foreign cultures. So, in theory, if you didn’t give a flying fuck about culture and traditions, you’d probably pick up on just about every red flag and/or strange occurrence in the village. Also also, you’d have to be pretty stupid to accept any unknown substance from anyone in an isolated/unmodernized village.

If ANY of the men (apart from simon) showed a crumb of concern for their fellow peer, they would have noticed sketchy things was earlier in my opinion. Yeah, I feel like people are really missing the point if they’re happy for Dani at the end. Not merely has she completely submitted to the twisted culture, traditions, and morality of the Hårga, she is also 100% culpable for the death of Christian. He was drugged and manipulated into the act that she saw. Recall too that she and Pelle shared a deep kiss before any of that, yet for Christian’s betrayal, she allows him to be killed. Ultimately, she became as bad as her sister, murdering Chris, and I don’t think her mind could recover from that. So now she’ll either be sacrificed in the remaining six days of the festival (where was last year’s may queen?) or become Pelle’s wife and have all the kids the group needs to add new genetics. She’s now a prisoner both of the Hårga and of the choices she made - she can never go back to the real world.

Dani had a very similar moment in the last scene. i’ve seen so many people say “she’s finally at piece” or “she’s finally happy” but i think that she’s quite the opposite, and that that was actually her breaking point to where she couldn’t return.

    Pelle brought Danni because she is prime cult material right now. She is lost and alone. He brings her into a community that calls itself a family that is built off of sacrifice (ie the elderly killing themselves), feeling each other’s pain (the community crying along with individuals echoing their pain), and support. They love bomb her to make her feel welcomed and supported. She finally got some sort of control in her life when she got to chose who was sacrificed and to stay.

      It’s to highlight the contrast between a all for one village vs the western society where everyone is just looking out for themselves and their complete lack of care and apathy for anyone else
      This is especially shown through Christian’s lack of consideration for not only his gfs feelings but also for the fact he’s going to basically steal his friend’s thesis idea with zero concern for what a dick move that is
      The complete lack of care mark shows as a GUEST for the environment he’s in and how he can’t seem to understand what he did wrong because of his great sense of entitlement to never having to care about anyone until now
      Also the entitlement shown in the black guys part and how he was given a strict No and how he can’t seem to understand boundaries which is apparently a common thing in our very narcissistic society
      Yes the hagra might be completely fucked up with their torture and killing shit but this is a festival that happens once every 90 years and I have to wonder, if the movie had taken place during a normal summer would the hagra be painted in a more positive light ? Maybe they are not so evil and barbaric maybe they just seem to understand the necessity for a “purge” in order to keep their way of life functional , everyone needs an outlet for their demons and western culture is full of that yet it’s painted as normal and not that big of a deal yet I’m sure in another time period it’ll be looked at as a fucked up way of life

    At the very end, the villagers inside the burning house are given the "Feel No Pain, Feel No Fear" flowers and I love that the entire trust of the cult is betrayed in the final moments. The "no pain" guy starts to burn and scream and the "no fear" guy has the scariest look on his face.
    This helps me understand both sides of the narrative. From Dani's perspective you're brainwashed into thinking the cult is life. With these last few shots on the villagers who were fully brainwashed into sacrificing themselves, told they would go in peace and then, don't. So the villagers realize this was all bullsh*t from the start. But only moments before they die (horribly) and only the elders know/believe the scam

      I think it's also mostly cause we are shown how lonely her life was that made the whole cult thing more bearable than surviving because in the end, she's got no one to run to. The May Queen dance is won by being the last one standing. This means the cult could easily fix it so Dani 'wins'. Dani is also drugged before the dance and is therefore not able to tell if her win is legitimate or not. This entire thing was orchestrated by the cult via Pelle. Pelle knew this was a dysfunctional group of friends. He knew Dani and Christian had a dysfunctional relationship. He knew Dani suffered an immense loss AND he knew she was having panic attacks since she had one right in front of him. We see Pelle manipulating her on multiple occasions. We see Dani drugged on multiple occasions. Given all that, it blows my mind that people think that ending is happy, or that Dani decided anything, or that Dani is smiling because she feels she's better off. You think they stopped the carriage within hearing distance of the mating ritual by accident? Come on. This whole thing was carefully planned. The only thing the cult couldn't control was if Dani went to Sweden. Once that decision was made Dani was never coming back because you can be sure Pelle told them everything about her as soon as they arrived. I'm assuming they don't use phones or Pelle could have told them sooner than that.

    • @onacanilao
      @onacanilao 9 місяців тому

      Agree! And it’ll be stupid to think Dani is living happily ever after with the cult. They need kids, and she is brought there for that reason. She might be drugged/forced to have babies soon after. There is also a high chance she can be picked as sacrifice in other rituals. And remember about the baby that is being raised by the community? What happened to the baby’s parents? Similar to what could have happened to Pelle’s parents. They died in a fire; was that a sacrificial ritual too? She has no control with her life, it’s the Harga that controls her.
