The Maxi was my first moped and still own one 30 years later (in parts plus spares) The engine you took out looked like a Peugeot with a Variomatic drive. That engine needs to swing under tension of a compression spring for the Vario to function. Not nearly as reliable as the maxi engine but a lot more efficient at low speed. Very rare these days, though Maxis are still easy to find, running or easily fixed.
What a kool Project! Remember to leave some slack on the chain about 1 to 1 1/2 inch because when you sit on the moped the chain will tense up and you want the front and rear sprockets and chain o last. installing a chain tensor with a spring also helps. You got craft !
Your wife will thank you for a mudguard on the rear wheel (to prevent dirty water to splash onto her back, ruining her coat) Good project, would love to do this myself!
I would of taken off all the rust while you were at it and had it disassembled, taken off the stickers, sprayed it with primer, then rattle can painted it with your wife's favorite color of enamel. Baby light blue is a real pretty color on these things. For low maintenance and less cleaning and easier touch ups, silver of black (flat or gloss) are the best colors). Silver looks pretty sharp, flat black hides drips. A whizzer wheel on a drill, plus soaked in cheap apple cider vinengar, then brushed with a tooth bursh with phosphoric acid from Lowes to keep it from rerusting until you get it painted... does a good job of derusting. Polish up those chrome rims with some Mother's Polish and a 0000 steel wool.
4:55 I see myself struggle decades ago lol. Taking off tyre: Fully deflate, start taking off tyre at the valve, so the other side can slide or be pushed into the middle of the rim. Putting on a new tyre: Get one side to sit in the middle of the rim, so the other end can slide on (no tools req). Put the tube in (with baby powder), barely inflated, rather flat but not completely flat! Get the other side of the tyre to sit in the middle of the rim, OPPOSITE of the valve. Slide the last end of the tyre onto the rim (probably no tools or soap req) Hope that helps. Thanks for the video, I'm curious how it's gonna turn out.
Wow! I had a Maxi in the mid '70's when they first became popular in the US. Love what you're doing with this. Going to be a wheelie machine with that gearing! 😉
I doubt that the sprocket adapter you made ever appears in any machining class or handbook - but it is exactly the kind of thing that makes this channel so brilliant, and what I think engineering is all about! Now I got to sit here and wait until you reappear…. :0)
I have that motor / controller - blew up the controller but you could connect the white (learn) wire and set it to run in the opposite direction without switching wires.
Man I can’t believe how much you’ve learned and know over the years. I don’t own a metal working lathe yet….I’m jealous 😊 And I don’t know if the viewers understand the thought that has to go into making a part….the order of operations. It can be really tricky. Even on a simple part lol👍😄
I'm hoping there will be some kind of chain guard! 😬 looks like fun, and a lot quicker to do than the jeep! (I get project fatigue on long projects). Give me a shout if you need any help with the battery.
If that's vevor's 1800w 48v kit, I ran the same one on a go-kart for a while, but ended up burning out the speed controller on a hot day. I replaced the speed controller with a 3000w one I found on ebay, and everything been going along just fine ever since. stout little motor for a pre-teen version of power wheels
being a machinist as a trade I picked out back in 1983 i have seen many unnecessary accidents around me, and watching these video's clenching my what's left of my teeth be careful around metal lathes, thats all!
Can I just say, it's nice to FINALLY hear someone actually call a Mo Per a Mo Per instead of scooter and not call a scooter a Mo Per since anyone with a grade 1 education can see how obviously a Mo Pet is a motorised, pedal assisted vehicle unlike scooters which are obviously not. So I thank you for having common sense! Great Vid I convert all my Vespa and Lambretta Scooters to Electric, 72v system, Kelly Controller, 10kw in hub motor wheel, 520 nm of torque, 0-100 kph in 1.2 sec, top speed of 175 kph, 80ah LiFePo4 72v battery (I refuse to waste my money or time on Li Ion they are rubbish and simply way too dangerous lol)
I see lots of poeple using this motor recently, is this the vevor motir and speed controller combo? i would like to buy one but im worried about water, do you know anything about this motors water resistance?
The motor is definitely not sealed in any way (I guess in part for air cooling). But being a brushless motor, I’m not sure if water in the motor would kill the electrical bits or not….but isn’t probably not great for the bearings at any rate.
Kad sam zivio u Hrvatskoj prije 50 godina ja sam imao i vozio Tomos dugo godina i nikad nisam imao problema s nicim. Jedino sto mu je falilo je drugo sjedalo... hvala na videu
The problem you were having when threading, is that most of the cheap tap and die sets, tend to have dies that are on good for recutting old and damaged threads.
sticker = Rolling Stones ? I'd take off road as trail bike but here in city would be an active death warrant, saw a guy knocked off cycle a mile from residence... also cool would be a honda engine or a homemade alternative, and then run it on woodgas, used vege oil, or do a diesel one....
It a great build actually really like that frame despite it being a design I usually don't like. However I'm really sad you didn't do a complete job of it and get the rust of everything and give it a new paint job. Thus bike could be awesome rather than just nice.
19:36 I hope you weren't using the "good scissors" to cut that cardboard. When I was a kid, using the "good scissors" for some project was almost a capital offence.
I'm not a psychiatrist, but I play one on UA-cam, so, if you got into machining to build an electric moped, finish this moped, deliver the Jeep to the woods and sell the tools, it's not to late to save yourself, if not, you'll end up disappearing into the woods only to re-appear 15 years later wearing a dress claiming you Natalie woods re-incarnated. I know it happened to me, and it still pisses me off the local news didn't even bother to show up at my press conference. Good luck and may the force be with you.
That's a brilliant idea. Just like the Jeep. Go for it, Jeremy.
Opening line!!!! That is the story of my life!
I would love it if PUCH would build electric maxis. We had a maxi when i was in my early teens. So much nostalgia
Nice solution for the sprocket to motor adapter.
Brilliant!! Jeep conversion and moped conversion videos to look forward to! Love the journey!
Industrial robot battery, you can't drop that in the final seconds then end the video!!! Looking forward to the next exciting frankenmoped installment
Oh man, I’ve been there. Three tire spoons at the same time!
Ha, old 2 strokes are the best version of 2 strokes. They cant be beaten.
Love is:
A million side projects on the way to doing that one special project for your wife. ❤

The drive system was of a Vespa/piaggio moped. It’s a duel variator set up, so the rear pulley expands and contracts to tension the belt.
Good job 👍👍👍Thank you for sharing. Be safe 🇨🇦

I had one in the 90's. but then it was made by piagio not stayer. was basicly the same as the '70's model.
I did not expect you to once work on a austrian Moped :P I love mine ... manufactured only a few 100 km from where I live in the early 80s
250km from where I live. Have you been to the Puch Museum in Graz? 😄

Nice. I'm converting a 79' batavus to 72V 3kw electric right now
I have that motor / controller - blew up the controller but you could connect the white (learn) wire and set it to run in the opposite direction without switching wires.
Excellent idea! But gosh now I want one 👀
Very cool! My random guess would be: battery in a backpack 😅
Good video, with little bit humor in it 🤌

"Hey Honey - I made you a prototype electric bike for you to commute 6Km to your work"
"Thanks... but I'll be taking the car. Enjoy your new toy!"
:)
We can only hope.
See, this is how you add a project in the middle of another.

Is there any way we could make the battery range to 100 or so miles cause i wanna make this a daily driver
Hey Jeremy, check chain tension through the range of motion of swing arm. you may need 1.75" of slack.
Good job
I can see an electric bike in my future.
being a machinist as a trade I picked out back in 1983 i have seen many unnecessary accidents around me, and watching these video's clenching my what's left of my teeth be careful around metal lathes, thats all!
Thought Anchor Lube was really just for stainless? Works well on everything else?
It works pretty well on most metals. I like that is doesn’t drip off and that it doesn’t smoke.

Scooters (50cc) just get classed in with mopeds because they have similar size, weight and engine power...
Will the chain hit the shock under compression?
How does that off center belt pulley thingy work on the old rear wheel? (sorry, don't know anything about mopeds)
There’s a gearbox inside the hub, and there’s a centrifugal clutch on the pulley.
Why wouldn't you clean off that shock retainer bolt while its apart??? Looks pretty rusty.
Neat, looking forward to the rest. Do you expect any issues with the swing arm pivot point and motor center being so far apart?
I don’t think it will be a problem, it’s about 2” farther forward than the stick motor. But I like to leave room for failure.
@@JeremyMakesThings hahahah, leaving room for failure is good planning

Yessiirrr i have been waiting for something like this!
20:53 It's been my experience that any more than about 2 seconds on those impact drivers and you've over tightened the bolt😉
I’ll be more careful next time. 😆
@@JeremyMakesThings 👍
Why such a huge rear sprocket ?
I see lots of poeple using this motor recently, is this the vevor motir and speed controller combo? i would like to buy one but im worried about water, do you know anything about this motors water resistance?

Jeremy you might wanna get that wrist looked at, it sounded a little creaky bolting the motor to it’s plate
The problem you were having when threading, is that most of the cheap tap and die sets, tend to have dies that are on good for recutting old and damaged threads.
When is coming part 2
I’ve been hoping I’ll wrap it up “next week” for about the past month.

The lathe part I think is out of focus. Either way, great video!
TIL that those connectors had a way to remove pins!
lmao the sound of u tighting it by hand
I’ve built 5 maxis now. What the heck engine is on there?
It’s a Solo motor. Super weird German water cooled motor, but it was just a closed water jacket around the cylinder (no lines or radiator).
You should get a Mobylette seat. Comfiest seats out there.@@JeremyMakesThings
This is exactly what I was looking for. thank you and I hope to see the next parts of the series! +1 like and +1 Sub
Muito bom !
Why didn't this make an appearance at Gauleyfest?
It’s not done yet.
@@JeremyMakesThings yup, that comment came out before I finished the video. Looks like quite the battery you have for it lol

poor puch
Don't do that to this buitifull maxi
excellent vid thanks
old 2 strokes are unreliable? 🤣 Maybe if they are not maintained and rusted to shit..
