D-20/10/110 may not be as popular and powerful sound as D-50, but it has plenty of features not found in the D-50, such as it's 8-part multi-timbral capability and has the drum and percussion part. I believe this D-20 is the beginning of the Roland Sound Canvas series.
Good demo and for those of you wondering what this synthesizer is worth: dive into the manual and program any sound dry and turn off internal effects. Then route the output of the D20 through a decent recent effectpedal or module and it will sound like a 1000 bucks... when played right. For this and any other synthesizer goes - garbage in, garbage out. If you're a decent keyboard player it will sound decent and if you're proficient it may even sound great! In the end it's still the player that defines the sound. ;-) So give you're synth the love it deserves, happy playing!
Yeah it's my Jewel, D-20 to D-50 i had a 4 track & did wonders with 2 Synths Combined. Wish i never sold it $600, i bought it $3,500 NZ when 1st Imported 87"
Je n'arrive pas à croire que je trouvais le Roland D-20 excellent en 1990. Les sons me semblent tellement artificiels aujourd'hui, c'est incroyable la différence avec les machines récentes.
i have a question my roland d 20 half has a sound and the other half another like bass and piano and i want it to only have one sound on the whole piano
Most sounds were built-in, but you could load additional banks from floppies, as well as customizing your own sounds and save everything (sequencer songs + bank) on a floppy disk.
Hello i just brought one and it didnt come with cards. Do i need a card to get sound from this keyboard. Im new to this. It turns on but gives no sound

If anyone is able to look up for me and help, which would you say is the preset for the intro of Sidi h'bibi by Mano Negra? I would be eternally grateful.
I don't think this is as bad as some people make out, I personally like some of the sounds on the D-20 even though it's not something I would choose to buy. I did consider getting a D-110 but instead I decided to get a CM-32L and CM-32P that were sold together mainly because I didn't want the fuss of having to reload sysex files to get all the patches back and wasn't really bothered about editing the patches. In general I prefer the U series as the PCM instruments tend to generally sound better, I also have a Roland U-220.
Hello! I was wondering if it could be possible to control parameters of those (extremely tedious to edit) patches using an external midi controller with knobs sending CC or sysex to the synth? Since the PG10 could be used at the time to do that, I'm wondering if any midi controller could do that too...
Hello i just brought one and it didnt come with cards. Do i need a card to get sound from this keyboard. Im new to this. It turns on but gives no sound
This is the only piano I have, my dad got it back in the 80s. It is SO HARD to use, the thing has got to be the most unintuitive ui I can think of, makes sense I guess. I’ve learned the rudiments of other instruments quicker than I learned how to operate this thing on a basic level 😂
The claviature on this feels great, I use it mainly as a MIDI controller even though it takes up quite a lot of space on my desk. The synth can yield some interesting results because of the uncommon synthesis method, Linear Arithmetic synthesis (LAS). It is regular subtractive synthesis with PCM samples for the transient and embellishment of the sound. The intention of the transient samples was to make the sound more percussive and FM-like, wanting to compete with DX7, but it kind of became it's own thing. Many of the factory patches are wonky and not useful, so you need to learn to operate it to get the most out of it. The D-20 and D-50 has potential for some naive, weird, warm FM-esque sounds. The D-50 sounds much better than D-20. They are cumbersome to program since the user interface is shitty.
It's a very nice instrument. I've had the D-50 for quite some time, and recently acquired the W-30. If I find a MINT D-20 I'll certaiinly be tempted to get it.
***** I got the W-30 because I never had a keyboard sampler. The sound of the W-30 is fantastic. I can't advise about the sequencer, unfortunately. I trigger the W-30 form a weighted A-80 controller. I just play the keyboard. Haven't done sequencing for years. But from what I hear, the W-30 is on par or better than MC-500. So, it should be quite powerful. It's all about how much you are willing to learn it. Any sequencer or a musical instrument is only as good as its user can use it.
***** Of course. W-30 is a professional fully programmable instrument. W-30 is not only a sampler with which you can create multi-sample sets with velocity switch and all, but also a powerful synthesizer with resonant filter, LFO, multistage envelopes, etc. Moreover, you can create sounds while the W-30 sequencer is playing. I mean, sky is the limit.
HELLO MY FRIEND ...YOU SAVED MY LIFE I HAVE YEARS SEARCHING JUST ONE SOUND .....3:37 I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE NAME OF THAT SOUND .... AND HOW CAN I CONTACT YOU?
I got one in 1989 and it was pretty nice at the time. This D20 sounds pretty dull and shitty but I learned a lot using the sequencer/drummachine/soundediting Plastic sounds not very enjoyable
@@Henrik_Mikkelsenthe key to enjoying it is to embrace the fact that it won't sound realistic and that the built-in sounds and reverb aren't that great. It's a relatively powerful synth all its own, but it needs the right knowhow and mindset to get the most out of it.
I just unboxed one that my dad gave me years ago I need help navigating to get through the patches! It looks like your pressing combinations of numbers is there some kind of formula? Thanks
Start with the internal/card button on "I" and the A/B group button on A. Press the #1 bank button on the top row, then do 1 through 8 on the bottom row. Then press #2 on the top row, then 1 through 8 again on the bottom row. After A-88, switch to B and go through the whole sequence again
Yeah, the presets are rubbish, but if you edit the sounds (preferably with a software editor), you can get close to D-50 quality sounds. (Provided you bring your own effects, but you should be doing that anyway if you want to make music with any synth)
5:20 Celesta 1 14:32 Oboe 2002 Both are used in Wario's Woods SNES and the Kirby SNES games. Oboe 2002 is used as a bassline in these games. (But it's not in Kirby's Dream Course or Kirby's Dream Land 3.)
One of the nicest partials on this synth, b48 Steel Drum. Great to blend with other tones to get more attack and brighten up the sound. In performance mode it's a patch on A72, in multi timbral it's a patch on B68.
Okay, so there are different levels of abstraction. The highest level of abstraction would be to buy a synthesizer for its demo songs. D-50 has no demo songs, so that's out of the way. Then one can buy a synthesizer for its factory patches. But aren't factory patches just a set of demo sounds? Judging a synthesizer by its demo patches should be similar to judging a musical instrument by its demo songs, no? My instrument has more demo songs, and therefore it's better. Logic has more loops and phrases than anything else, therefore it's best music program. But it's more of a high level things really better? Or just a dead end rabbit hole? Hey ma, I can't play this piano. Let me upgrade to a better one. Actually no, let me upgrade to the one with more sounds. Oh, better yet, let me upgrade to the one with more demo songs. Then I won't have to practice or even play music at all anymore. :)
