One seems to feel Beethovens confidence growing. After the well-written, but relatively tame symphonies 1 & 2, this piece is a different calibre. It has so much energy and character and its own voice. Beethovens even takes the risk as nearly breaking the borders of coherence as the funebre march very much stands on its own in this set.

Absolutely! You’ve just experienced Beethoven’s pure genius and you need some quiet, pensive time (not some loudmouth selling something immediately afterwards).
The comments here just show how difficult it can be to box up Beethoven with a label. Beethoven is clearly not Classical as in Mozart and Haydn, but neither is he Romantic as in Schumann, Chopin, Mendelssohn, and Liszt. Perhaps the best solution is to call him post-Classical, along with some of his contemporaries like Cherubini.
