I've fished Texas flats for 30-years. My favorite lure is a jointed Red-Fin. I find your observations the same as mine; slow steady retrieve, creating a wake for Redfish, and popping, darting action for Trout. Since Cordell sold the company, the product offering is minimual. I have some old colors I guard with my life....Thank you for your post.
Ross, absolutely awesome work as always man. Big fan of yours, I just don't post much. I'm new to boat fishing as I've just purchased a Shallow Stalker back in May. I fish here in the Upper Laguna/Baffin area, but your videos have helped me tremendously in my efforts to catch fish. Just wanted to say thanks for the info and keep up the good work with the postings as I know we all appreciate it here. Thanks again man.
you're absolutely right about the Lactic Acid building up in the muscles for the smaller to medium fish during a prolonged fight. I have noticed the same thing. The fishes recovery seems to be slower when reviving them beside the boat. Also want to add though, you dont keep the fish out of the water for long periods of time which is a huge factor.
+RedfishRoss I hear that the best way to get rid of the lactic acid build up in fish is to give them a side to side motion rather than back and forth . I have used this technique and it works.
Very good information in this video Ross. There's a jeweler here in my town who makes fishing jewelry like the redfish you got he's awesome I got a Texas slam pendent. I've never used green and white I always go to morning glory or pink or matagorda Magic. Goons have to buy a pack to keep in my bag. Thanks again
Great video, thank you for passing along this priceless knowledge. I had 4 questions for you: 1. How long is the leader for the Queen Cocaho? 2. What size barrel swivel do you use? 3. What size snap do you use?
Glad to see someone mentioning spinnerbaits. I've been using a few for a month or so now. Almost always catch fish. One thing that confused me in the beginning. I wasn't prepared for the amount of vibration they have. I thought I had a problem with the bait, so I changed it out to another spinner. Same thing. It vibrates so much you can REALLY feel it in the rod. I am used to the bass spinners with the willow blades. I don't know if the vibration comes from the bait or its the more sensitive braided line or the quality of rods I use now. Very likely a combination of it all. You make great instructive videos Ross!
Ross: I got to thinking that I hadn't bugged you for any info lately, and you might wonder if I was OK :). Well, I broke myself to lure fishing ONLY in freshwater about fifty years ago, but for some reason, I have not been able to shake off a certain amount of dependence on bait in salt water. Oh, I fish lures, but still have to mess with live and dead bait and all the trouble and mess that entails. What I value most about your videos is that the success you demonstrate tends to lead to a greater confidence level (in myself, at least) in an artificial-only approach. I know, of course, that other factors enter into success--such as the knowledge where fish will be at any given time--but i figure this is a start. Now, I have all my tackle neatly organized in boxes marked "Jetty", "Bay Bait", "Bank Fishing", "Tripletail" etc. etc. Accordingly (and this is not a joke!) I am putting together a box to be marked "Redfish Ross Box", containing the go-to lures on which you rely. Everything is complete, except I need to run out and pick up 2 or 3 Mirrodines and a couple of stick baits. So far, i have not been able to find any of the vertically floating variety that float with their tail end submerged and their nose in the air. Do you have any brand names for that type of lure? I know I have used big honking ones offshore for Yellowfin Tuna that float that way, but can't find any suitable for redfish and trout. Thanks as always, Russ
OK. I have my box pretty much put together. I have made three of your modded broken backs, and bought some Mirrodines. I already had all of the Gulp varieties, spinner-baits, Cocahoes, and curly tails, and quite a few Spook Juniors. Only thing I am missing is the stick bait that sits with it's tail in the water. I struck out, describing it to the folks at Tackle Town in Rockport and Roy's and Academy in Corpus. Any guidance on what it is called or where a man might order a handful? Thanks. Russ
Oh, and I went down to Little Bay and tried out your homemade Redfin. And Wow! I am not a redfish, but I had the urge to jump into the bay and grab it in my mouth...well, almost. The action is terrific.
@@redfishross hey buddy first off hope your feeling well i live in fla and do alot of snook and trout fishing artificial only like you and the old lure's still produce well at night it's a chartruese bomber floater or a rattle trap 1/4 oz johnson gold sprite these lure's been around 40 yrs
Bob Gill Hey Bob , I don't run a leader on hard baits but do use braid for top water lures because it floats. All other hard baits I'm using 12 # Stren Sensor that sadly they don't make any more.
True, there is nothing like fishing. Thank you for your videos Ross!
Great video and information on how to release fish back into water. Keep the videos coming!
Evelyn Lowery Thanks Evelyn.
Outstanding Ross. You're One of the best inshore teachers on UA-cam. You have made me a better fisherman, and I appreciate it more than you know.

Thanks, Ross. That's a good lead. I'll go by there again. They usually know their stock pretty well.
that cotton cordell has been around a long time
Very true , I remember them when I was a young man.

This saltwater rookie always learns something from your videos! Thanks for sharing! How do you keep your pre-tied leaders organized?
+RedfishRoss That makes sense. I was picturing you going out on the water with 6 or 8 leaders and different lures already tied for quick changes.
I wanted to ask if you have ever used a Topwater Plug, by MirrOlure the 5M models? I like the 5M21, 5M18, 5MS, 5MG, for Trout & Reds..
hey where can I get that color from because I went to their website they don't sell that color any more
Okay thanks for replying
Hey red fish Ross do u sell the lure u make top water kind
Paulino Bermudez Hey Paulino, no I don’t sell them.
Ross, what kind of stick bait is that?
Good evening sir! Is that Mirrordine lure the XL (27MR) or the smaller one 17MR?
thank u
Is the Waker the same as a BABY 1-MINUS?
Jack Groce Hey Jack , no it’s not the same , the Waker is a bigger lure but the are basically the same shape.
hey Ross, what is the size you are using on those reds?
J.J. Hey J.J. , it really doesn’t have a size they just call it the Waker.
RedfishRoss thank you!
What material, test strength, length do you use for the hard baits? Thanks.
Bob Gill Hey Bob , I don't run a leader on hard baits but do use braid for top water lures because it floats. All other hard baits I'm using 12 # Stren Sensor that sadly they don't make any more.
