  • From Germany via Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary to Rumania - that's the route our two DW reporters Shabnam Surita and Laila Abdalla took. They travelled all the way through Central and Eastern Europe to find out how the Russian war against Ukraine is affecting tourism in its neighboring countries.
And Shabnam and Laila also show you what not to miss in cities like Prague, Budapest and Bratislava.

With that title, I thought that you will choose some cities nearer the border with Ukraine. You went as far west as possible 😂 You can still go to cities near the border, they are safe. In Romania, you can visit the Maramures region, also the Bucovina region, both on the north border with Ukraine, or in the summer the Danube Delta, on the eastern border with Ukraine.

It’s interesting to realise that the frontline is as far from Wrocław as is… Barcelona. But still, tourism was affected big deal, especially people from Spain are afraid of coming to Poland, Romania, Slovakia. I say: it’s safe, come visit, this supports us and indirectly Ukraine that we try to support on daily basis. And you will be part of great history, how often can one say that.

@@matthewrybnicek There was a big Ukrainian minority here even before the war started. Something about 160k from what I have found. Most of Czechs don't really have any problem with that, as they are well integrated into our society

You go to capitals of central European countries and ask if Ukraine affected them. No they didn't, they aren't even near Ukraine. And 3 capitals do not give you a realistic impression of a country. Kinda pointless from a news perspective but I'm sure it was fun.

The statues of "dwarfs" isn't actually dwarfs what you think they are Ludkové or permoníci from Western Slavic mythology, they was very close to the humans cities and even citizens of towns and tribes , they are not like dwarfs from Germanic mythology who hide themselves but like more visible and helpful for households 🇨🇿🇵🇱🇸🇰 ( also sorbians 🇩🇪)

    • @Pandzikizlasu80

In Polish skrzat, gnom and krasnal are synonyms. Gnom is rather used in mean context the other two are hiding but rather not close to houses and secretly helping good people at work, but are also mean to bad ones hiding/stilling things from them. Krasnals are a bit more often accused for bad things ;) The word skrzat has an Old Germanic etymology, krasnal is from the Old Slavic, gnom is from Latin.

Travel "nearby the war" while you stay hundreds of kilometers away and show just generic stuff what western rich tourist would do.
DW and Germany is truly a world of tolerance and mutual respect...
It only revaels the true german colonial thinking that all of those coutres are just lands to devide between Berlin and Moscow.
