I have friends that fish marlin around the world and they tell stories about some that have tail danced into the cockpit of sportfishers and a couple wear the scars from the bill striking them. That was a nice fish. All billfish should be catch and release.
Hey Unc, thanks for the advice. After this video I actually read about a woman in Florida that got stabbed in the leg with the bill of a marlin. I had no idea…Tom was definitely right about being unequipped for keeping it. I’m glad it got away to be honest, it would have been more than we could handle.

i always wondered about hooks left in fish...apparently they rust out within a dayr or 2.. uh oh, that housing is expensive! i know b/c i gouged it when i was changing the seals last time!
Clearly David has never watched The Perfect Storm, after watching that movie and seeing how one of the fishermen in the movie got impaled by a sword fish, I would never stand or much less stick my head in the water between a sword fish and the person who has it hooked on the other end, that is unless I am standing 5ft above deck from the fish and ready to hook it
man i love that movie but don't remember that scene...good to know. as you can see I'm a newly minted fisherman...going 2 weeks strong in this video! The 1st fish we ever caught on the boat was that 5ft wahoo and then i was all in.
@@david_shih Not sure if maybe I might be mistaken it with the shark scene. But I did use to live in a fishing area and have heard a few cases on long line fishing boats getting impaled, sword fish can swim very fast specially when frighten, where I lived sifhermen would take the bony area in the sword and sharpen it even more to protect them selves from pirates. Cheers from Costa Rica, if you are ever in the area I would love to meet up with you guys. Pura Vida 🤟
Prop story dont hold. He was too strong on the rod breaker. Give more slack when the fish is strong. Always a man at the helm ready to move away the line when it’s about to go under the boat. Jockeying the helm is super important. Man with rod slacks tension when boat have to move away from line.
@@david_shih I get that you are an entertainer and you have to indulge certain lesser intellects. I also know there are far more stupid people that need that kind of interaction. But for the others who see things hooked massive marlin and DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. That doesn't inspire a lot of confidence that you should even be on a boat. Yes I know this comment will draw out the trolls like the moth to the flame. But the can look at me like they stepped in dog sh*t all the want. Acting stupid to draw in views annoys the sh*t out of me. Yes for the taxi cab confessional, I live a very stressful life being surrounded by stupidity. Cheers.
hey Freaki...pretty cool name btw. so confession time...i had only been fishing for 2 weeks when we filmed this. At the risk of drawing out the judgemental comments myself, I really don't know much about fishing, much less how to land a marlin. I was actually considering jumping in with the pole to unwrap it from the rudder/prop--obviously stupid in hindsight. i had no idea the power behind these bill fish as i had only handled a wahoo, mahi, and a few small tuna up until this point. I frequently get comments about how I don't deserve to own a cat b/c don't have enough experience or I shouldn't be out sailing bc I dont know what I'm doing. But I see it differently, i've discovered the best way for me to learn is to jump in head 1st and get rid of any way to back out. Then i can't quit and I always figure it out. I do however, try surround myself with some experts and learn on the way!
@@david_shih I certainly didn't say you don't deserve to own one. If you're able to get one, then yes; you deserve one. I however built mine. So I am an outcast/black sheep of the sailing community because I didn't buy one. It's not a question of whether or not you know what you are doing. Everyone at one point didn't know what they were doing. I have nothing against people trying to learn and indulge the community. No amount of education will ever trump experience. Anyone who says otherwise is a moron. I have a problem with people using misleading advertising to draw in views and that is what your caption came off as. Someone running around like a chicken with his head cut off so that it would draw in people, particularly even more lesser intellects that post comments like, here's what you should have done.
Pura Vida 🤟
crazy. never knew people used the bill as a weapon! cool
Tom about to lose he's rat tail?
i think so! i was trying to cut it off in his sleep on this trip!
😂😂
there is a god...
Wait - 2 videos in 1 week?
i know i know, it's crazy...but I'm trying to get more consistent with these!
First to like!! ❤
wow Mac you're fast!
Is this video streak is because of the new macbook
I'm sure that's what he's telling Mary.🤣
yes...that is exactly what i told mary haha.
@@KenrikoYup thats what he told me. 🤦🏻♀️
does 6 minutes really count?
too short? this next video is looking like it's going to be 3-4x as long... still working on cutting it down though. I can't stand any boring moments.
Prop story dont hold. He was too strong on the rod breaker. Give more slack when the fish is strong. Always a man at the helm ready to move away the line when it’s about to go under the boat. Jockeying the helm is super important. Man with rod slacks tension when boat have to move away from line.
who would have thought there was so much to fishing?! so much to learn :)
Noah called he's gonna need that rod and reel back on the arc..
Bahahaha. You’re not the 1st to laugh at that setup. But it did land every fish we caught so far.
I've giving you a thumbs down for the patronizing click bait title.
aw you don't like my title? serious question though, what do you mean by patronizing? Maybe i'll change it.
HOWEVER, that is not the case. You legitimately say you don't know what you are doing. So I apologizing for misinterpreting and being an ass. As mentioned you just happen to catch me in the mood. Maybe I'll see you on the water.
@@svfreakitiki no apology needed my friend! I must say it's rare, but much appreciated, to have a productive conversation on the comments. Thank you for that. It's pretty amazing that you built your cat...i built (or rebuilt) 1% of mine and can't imagine having to do the other 99%! See you on the water one day!
David you are so cool. I have had the opportunity to meet you a few times and I love that you are real and so energetic!! I hope to meet up again some day and hang out and hear your stories!!
You’re too kind. And quite cool yourself. According to mary I love talking, so let’s do it! Beers at the rundown marina bar one day!
@@david_shih My favorite type of bar :)
and mine tooo.
