Lake Baikal is the largest, oldest, deepest freshwater lake on earth and even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Above all, however, he is the mirror of the Russian soul: large, mysterious and with a touch of melancholy. It is located in Siberia, a mountainous region in Russia north of the Mongolian border.
With a length of 636 kilometers and a width of between 27 and 80 kilometers, its surface is a good 31,700 square kilometers. That's about the size of Belgium. No wonder that Lake Baikal is also called "sea".
And even if Lake Baikal only ranks seventh among inland waters with its size, it holds the absolute world record with a water depth of up to 1642 meters and around 20 percent of the freshwater reserves on earth.
The water in Lake Baikal is particularly pure and clear with a visibility depth of up to 43 meters. Today Lake Baikal is the only open drinking water area in the world. The water is pumped from a depth of 400 meters and cleaned only by mechanical filters.
The age of Lake Baikal is estimated at 25 million years. The trigger for the emergence was the collision of the Indian subcontinent with Asia. As a result, plates shifted and finally a rift was formed - water collected in it and Lake Baikal grew to its current length over millions of years. Earth is still active in this region. The freshwater lake widens by around two centimeters every year, and there are also numerous hot springs.
Lake Baikal is also biologically exciting: there are around 3,500 endemic plants and animals here. For example, the Baikal seal called Nerpa, related to the Arctic sea seal, is unique.
