When I first watched this as a kid, that's what I thought that he was going to do. But to address your query, Adam can't do that. Because as soon as he calls on the power of Grayskull, he'll automatically transform. The only combinations you can have are: Adam and Cringer.
He Man and Battle Cat.
He Man and Cringer.
So basically, Battle Cat can't exist without He Man.
Although in the Masks of Power mini comic, you do have Prince Adam and Battle Cat.

It wasn't that bad. Finally watched it a day ago. I think if it was done in 2002, it would've been looked at differently. Also, it should've likely been titled something different to give people a better idea of the story. Masters of the Universe: The Rise of Teela or some such :p

Why is Cringer afraid of transformation?
His whole personality is being afraid of virtually anything, hence the name "Cringer". I think we learn some of his backstory in episode "Battlecat". ua-cam.com/video/Fz_ZHKz7Djo/v-deo.html
Cringer HATES becoming Battlecat. He's afraid one day that brutish, savage personality will completely take over his entire being.
He actually doesn't know, and he questions this in the episode Fraidy Cat.
But even though he hates transforming into Battle Cat, he's fine at the other end of the transformation. He is also glad when Battle Cat is around when he's needed as he also has said.

hi. this is from trouble in trolla, cringer hates trolla after the goings on in dawn of dragoon. i'd watch that to see why he hates going there. another great cringer ep is fraidycat, proper cringer that one, and if you want to see cringer stop the transformation, then complain about not being battlecat five minutes later, then temple of the sun is your friend. i love cringer as a character, they really did well with him, his dialogue is wonderful, and what alan openhimer did with cringer's voice is fantastic. i recently watched he-man again, and i just want to give cringer the biggest hug in the universe.
If they ever make a third incarnation of 'He-Man', maybe they can mix elements from both past versions. Maybe they can have Cringer speak, but not sound so wimpy.
Yeah, but Cringer's voice is part of his charm and part of the reason why decades later people still care about him.
@Kagereneko Perhaps a "werewolf duality" aspect could be added; as Battlecat, he is not in true control of himself and is a force of destruction that he does not like being, but chooses to become Battlecat when needs must because as afraid as he is, Cringer is brave enough to do what must be done to fight evil.
Adam needs to come out of the closet already.
Battle Cat is still cringer. Only difference is size and is made brave in the transformation. Battle Cat is what Cringer is in the inside. He knows what has to be done as Cringer but is scared. As Battle Cat he does not do anything againist his will.
