      Yes, you are right, but I think the focus should be on steering rather than on leaning. You just steer, and the bike takes care of the leaning itself. Steer and trust the lean. (Yes, for the pedants out there, steering on a bike means counter-steering.)

    #2 While it's sad, extremely sad, that the biker got taken out like that. I would hazard the guess the the driver of the vehicle said they couldn't see or was confused by what they saw when looking down road. When the vehicle hit the stop line the rider wouldn't be visible or just be a jumble of visual information because of that sign, entirely possible. Myself I think its a poorly placed sign and should be back another 50' at least.

      @Isaac_132 2 місяці тому +1

      @@charlesbynum non se·qui·tur - noun - a conclusion or statement that does not logically follow from the previous argument or statement.
      You don't have to be a good driver or even a driver to recognize bad driving. You just have to know the rules of the road. For instance, signaling a lane change is a legal requirement in every state and territory in the US. In my state you have to signal a minimum of 100 feet prior to making the lane change. I know the law. Being a good driver would include not just knowing the law but obeying it too. When the 6-year old across the street said that the guy who didn't stop at the STOP sign was a bad driver he was not wrong.
      When you change lanes it’s the responsibility of the driver changing lanes to ensure the lane they wish to move into is clear of other motorists and that it’s safe to make the lane change. Typically a driver would do that by looking. The driver of the truck obviously didn’t look and just changed lanes without any regard for other road users.
      Since a lot of people seem to get this one wrong, turn signals don’t give you the right to move over. They signal other drivers of what you’d like to do but you still have to ensure it’s safe to make the lane change.

    Here's the thing guys, the motorcycle safety courses lie to you. Braking while leaned over at speed through a corner is absolutely viable, you don't need to stand the bike up and run off the road. The only caveat is that you can't just mash the brakes as hard as you can, you need to know how to progressively increase pressure and you never want to add lean angle while you add input. Think you're gonna run wide? Damn dude drag some brakes and keep the bike leaned over.
    You can have the brakes on consistent and lean the bike or have the lean consistent and apply brakes. You can make the corner!

      While this is certainly true, the big deal here is that people just have to lean over. Most of these clips of riders going too fast into the corner show them not even coming close to the maximum performance of their tires and bike. Even without any braking, most of these guys would have been totally fine if they didn't essentially give up early and let the bike stand up.

      In the past, rider courses taught to straighten the bike before braking, but that has changed.
      Download the MSF book, and you’ll see that it no longer says that you can’t brake while leaned over.

      PS. I absolutely agree with you. When the … hits the fan, keep braking and keep steering the bike through the turn. Never ever give up on a turn, trust your tires and stay on the road whatever it takes. You can absolutely make the corner if you are determined to do so.
      Don’t use a lot of rear brake in a turn, front brake is safer regardless of what people say. You just have to apply it smoothly. The earlier the better.

    The bike will go through the turn at these speeds if you lean farther and make the bike do it. Otherwise it will take you off the road every time. Chickens don't need to ride fast and maybe not at all. Lean off the seat if you have to to get it around the curve. Unless you hit something that causes a traction problem bikes with today's tires can be almost laid on the ground before they will slide out from under you. Racers are now scraping not just their knees but now their elbows too. No amateur is going to take a bike over that far but it should show them that their bike is capable of a lot more than the rider is!

    • @crudboy12
      @crudboy12 2 місяці тому

      Yeah, most of the people who run wide run wide when they could have made it through the corner. That type of crash kills a lot of motorcyclists each year and I don't think the MSF and other courses do a great job of emphasizing the importance of not giving up when you think you are going to crash. It's easy to focus on speed, target fixation, and poor lines as causes for these crashes but most of these are completely savable up until the tires leave the pavement. You aren't turning as hard as you can until the footpeg is touching the ground usually, and even in poor traction conditions, it's better to chance it and turn as hard as you need to make the turn.

    • @dgphi

      "their bike is capable of a lot more than the rider is"
      That's true up to a point. Yes, in most of the clips where people run wide, the crash was caused by a simple failure to steer. If the riders had simply committed and steered through the curve, they would have been fine. The bike would have easily been able to handle it, like you say.
      However, it's a bad idea to think that the bike can take whatever abuse you throw at it. At some point it won't, and you will crash. For instance we often see clips where someone cranks open the throttle mid-turn, and they lose the rear. And we often see people who stomp on the rear brake mid-turn and lose the rear.
      The pro racers can scrape elbow because they are very smooth and expert with their inputs (and they have high quality bikes too of course). The message should be: Be smooth with your inputs, and the bike will be highly capable.
