    The reason many people don't use all their vacation days is that a lot of times it is lumped together with sick days as PTO or paid time off. You don't want to use all your PTO in case you get sick.

    • @Big_Tex
      @Big_Tex 2 роки тому +6

      And another reason is that Americans are simply more into work and less into vacations. I get about 40 days between PTO and company holidays. I seldom manage to take more than 30 because I have work that needs to be done and only I can do it, and the work is fulfilling, and if I take more than a week off I get stir crazy and anxious. And it baffles me, if someone can take a month off from work without everything going to shit, why does their job even exist?

      @@Big_Tex I think the issue here is you and not people that take a month off. You have to realize that most people dont find their job fulfilling and they are only working to have food and a roof over their head. If you ever become a boss then dont be one of those that dont let people take long vacations just because you cant comprehend it. Loving your job it's fine, but your life is will be wasted if you think that's all theres to it.

      I was in public school in the 1990s and 2000s and we had to learn both. My Father also said he had to learn both in the Washington State public school system in the 1960 and 1970s. So I think it depends on the area you live in the US if you are taught it or not.

    • @ethansenter5298

      Exactly, people act as if we don’t use the metric system at all and that couldn’t the further from the truth. It gets used in science, certain areas of engineering, the military, and in packaging to name a few. Hell, technically American imperial units are defined by their metric equivalents. Never mind that almost all the measuring devices have metric markings in addition to the imperial ones.
      Honestly, the only time this hybrid system even becomes an actual issue is in engineering if you aren’t careful because you’ll have to switch between the two since your science and math is in metric but the actual product will likely be in imperial. Aside from that the only issue I can think of is that at least for me I tend to not have very good frames of reference for metric units, aside from boiling and freezing Celsius temperature measurements tell me nothing about how hot or cold it is, I have no idea how “fast” Km/h is without a static reference, and weight measurements are entirely abstracted for me. Although if I think about it I actual have a decent idea with regards to distances… probably from rules of thumb such 3 feet ~ 1 meter, gun calibers, and video games which typically measure distance in meters and klicks. Regardless, I can still use metric easily if given proper equipment and/or if operating entirely in metric such as during a science lab, honestly metric’s simplicity makes it super easy to measure with even if it’s abstract because due to a lacking frame reference for what the measurement would feel/look like.

    Fact Check: America as a whole nation like it is today was NOT a colony of Britain, ONLY the former 13 colonies in the east coast were part of Britain. The majority of the rest of America was either native Indian lands or French and Spanish territories. A very small portion of America was actually a British colony until the War of Independance when that came to an end. The vast majority of America during the British colonies was native Indian lands, French territories, Spanish(then later Mexican) territories. I say this because most people believe America as a whole was part of Britain when in fact a very small portion of America ever was. Just some FYI for the ignorants.

    The Month/Day/Year thing is easy to explain. It still follows smallest values to largest values. Yes a day is shorter than a month, and a month shorter than a year. HOWEVER, if you were to base that value, not on the length of time as you do, but instead on the number of possible inputs in the sequence, you would see it's a difference of perspective. Example. Month comes first because there are only 12 of them. Days come second because there are up to 31 of them. And years remain at the end because it is forever increasing. So we have 12-31-yyyy, based on number of input values. day-month-year is based on length of time.

      Exactly what I was thinking. I see a lot of Europeans confused by this, but as an American it's always made more sense to me. Tbh I think the solution to how a date should be written is to use letters rather than slashes or dashes. So instead of 1/30/2000 it'd be 1m30d2000 or in European style 30d1m2000, then the format literally doesn't matter since even if both the month and day are less than 13, you could tell which style it's written in (e.g. 5m6d20y)

      It gets confusing if you are searching for, say a livestream, and you have 28/4, 3/5, 15/5, 2/6 instead of 4/28, 5/3, 5/15, 6/2. Computers can't automatically organize those dates either, you'll probably get 2/6, 3/5, 15/5, 28/4 in a youtube autoplay system.

    • @DethWulf
      @DethWulf 2 роки тому +2

      I'll be quite honest, as a fellow American, that sounds like an over-engineered and complicated reasoning for something rather mundane, haha. The way I see it, we don't really need any justification for why we format our dates that way. That being said, I've long-since gotten used to formatting my dates Year - Month - Day because I organize my digital files that way, and have seldom had to write down a date by hand in the past decade since I left school. That way it's unambiguous no matter who's reading it :P

Second, and most importantly, without saying so, you're argument makes the "Military" seem (edit here:) mature and responsible. If that were the case, you'd be better off, but there's a need for military police, soldiers all the time are being discipline and paying for crimes against the military, same as in civilian life. It's illegal to drink & drive for an 18-year-old just like a 98-year-old. However, I do get your point, but it's not as compelling, (IMO) as being old enough to die for something, but not old enough to consume something. Your brother mentioned seeing FC after football team names. NFC stands for National Football Conference. AFC stands for American Football Conference. The top teams of each battle each other at season’s end for right to play the super bowl.
    Pro games are expensive, so that adds to the list of reasons why college games are so popular. One other reason is the excitement of seeing a player you cheered through college games get picked to a pro team.
    That drive time cross country doesn’t count sightseeing, but does include time for sleep and meals. If you drive shifts with a partner it takes less time, but it seems more like chore than pleasure.

    I’ll point out the obvious, that the stat that 42% Americans have passports obviously does not mean the other 58% have never left the US. Passports expire after 10 years. I currently am in the 58% who don’t have one, because the two passports I previously had expired, and I don’t currently need one. But I’ve been to 20 countries in the past. Also many people do international travel in the military and may never need a passport in their situation. I’d guess that Americans are more apt to only get a passport during some phase of life when they think they’ll travel, like when they’re in college or get a job with a multinational, but then be in no hurry to renew when that expires.

The US allows the sale of "large" drinks which are often filled about half way with ice. So a US large at 500 ml, you only typically get about 200 ml of actual soda. My good tenants would not only tip me but would cook me breakfast/lunch and even give me Christmas presents. In return I would do free unreported repairs and not report illegal "activities" I witnessed in their apartments and even hook them up with free cable. Remember maintenance sees everything not the office mngt. So be nice to your maintenance people.

    I'd definitely say that the ~9 days to get from NYC to LA is due to stopping a lot and not driving a good portion of the day. We did so many road trips growing up that we could drive from central NY state to the west coast (Oregon, Idaho, Washington) in about 3 or four days. We'd stop to see national parks, zoos, historical monuments, etc. to take up time, once we got to each of the places we had planned to stop for the night/along the way, but we did a lot of driving every day. The one time we drove to Las Vegas it took 2-2.5 days.

Depending on where an American is flying from and where they're flying too, it can take like 7-13 hours if not more to get to Europe. When I flew from Chicago to Seoul in Korea for my exchange student program, it took me 18 hours in the plane. 4 hours just to get to Seattle and the rest was over the ocean.

    I think what a lot of people outside the U.S. don't stop to think about is the fact that we're flanked by two of the biggest oceans on the planet. As of today July 23rd, a flight from NYC to London in September is anywhere from $400-600. Tack on to that any flight inside the country just to get to NYC and it could cost up to $1k and you haven't even done anything but travel.
    Why would I spend that much when I could take several vacations with the same exact amount of money and do everything from skiing to seeing historical sites to camping to swimming in the ocean and anything in between?

    I just looked at a trip to the UK and from the Washington DC area a flight to London and Hawaii are about the same cost depending on the time of year but it can take up to a day traveling to get to Hawaii vs 10 hrs to the UK, just for context. Also, we don't have livable wages so it can take years of planning to afford more than a road trip or a few states travel for many people. Lastly, there are a few US cities that are frequented more than most because the airlines are able to offer cheaper rates due to the ability to fill the planes and have multiple trips daily maximizing profit. So for example going to Las Vegas is usually very cheap no matter where you are in mainland US.

They do a whopping business and he makes a lot of money in tips. Good servers in popular restaurants can make 300-500 a nigh easy,t especially during tourist season. It's not a fortune but it's a good amount of money where we live you can certainly Live well on that.
    You guys were chatting when they were explaining why a lot of people who are servers and who eat out a lot don't want to see the system change. If the restaurants raise the base pay observers, that will pass that increase along to the customers by charging more for the food you order. They would have to make up the different somewhere. So either way you're going to pay it. Would you rather the extra money go into the pocket of the server or into the pocket of the owner?

    Date order in the US: Actually, there is both a very simple, and oddly logical reason for the way the US does dates as we do. It comes down to a linguistic quirk that ended with the second great vowel shift, and the way we do dates was independently derived linguistically rather than following a British trend.
    If we go back to the colonial era, the date was always presented year month day. You might read a date from that era as; "In this the Seventeen hundred and first year of our Lord, August the First." Which, if written out was, 1701-08-01. However, during the second great vowel shift in the US the date was rearranged and dropped "...the year of our lord." So by 1830 most people would have said: "This day, August first, 1830". This shift was translated into numerical dates, 08/01/1830, and as a format it stuck. The particular cause for the shift isn't exactly known, but it is likely to do with the politics of the time. The US Constitution and the Framers of the country found religious regiments abhorrent, even going so far as to write the First Amendment which outlawed a State Religion. So former linguistic constructs, such as "in this year of our lord" were dropped from formal political speech and that of course was presented to the public in published articles and laws.

    Tipping may seem like you rely too much on people to be generous, but the truth is that _most_ people will at least tip 10%. That can add up really quickly, and actually lead to better wages than if you had an increased flat wage from the restaurant without tips. Bartenders can make great money from tips, too. We're talking like $300 a day. Of course it depends on the restaurant and the area, but even in the suburbs, a pizza delivery driver can make pretty good money, like $180/day. That's over $20 per hour for a fairly simple job. The only drawback to being a delivery driver is you do need specific coverage from car insurance, which can eat into those tips.
