I don't think they made an entry level kit, many endorsers played Imperialstars back then. Stan Lynch of the Heartbrakers played the exact same kit I had (and still have) on the road and in the studio back then, they were Imperialstars, and Stewart Copeland used them in the late 70's.

Making room for Crestar,Granstar, and Granstar custom(which were all basically the revamped Superstars in Birch).Then along came Artstar II maple shells and Rockstar pro... those were pro lines. While also coming out with an middle level 'working music lines' Rockstar and Rockstar DX.Then in the 90's things really changed,three was the rockstar lines Artstar II then Granstar II.But then Granstar II went bye bye,Artstar II went bye bye making way for Artstar custom and Artstar ES...and the mid 90's introduction on the Starclassics.Which was basically becoming the famed Artstars coffin nails. By the end of the 90's all Artstars were killed off making way for several model lines of Starclassics. Leaving only Starclassics and entry level Rockstar models....Tama has a good catalog archive pdf files on their site. They have almost all the years from the late 70's to checj out all their past gear
I am of the belief, the more toms the better! The Simon Phillips philosophy, and let me tell you, Simon's drums in the 90s, that is pretty much the ideal drum sound!
Bravo on the tuning of those drums. They are tuned up perfectly. Sounds great. Most UA-cam drum videos I see they detuned the drum down so much they sound horrible 99% of the time.
I was lucky enough to find a nice set of MIJ TAMA STARCLASSICS a few years back. Maple shells.. Lacquer finish. Sound absolutely amazing. Would never let them go fir any amount.
Now this my friends is what a well tuned kit sounds like. Not to mention this guy is an old school beast! I’m guessing Remo clear Emperors top and bottom on the toms, Remo coated emperor on the snare and again clear Emperors with fiberskin stickers on the kicks batter side, black Tama twin ply on front with a 5 or 8 inch port hole. Again proper head choice and good tuning as well as knowing your craft makes all the difference in the world. Best of luck to you in all your future endeavors 🥁

I just stumbled on this video and had to comment, these sound amazing man. Especially that snare. I love older Tamas and actually have 2 different Tama Rockstar DX kits. They both sound amazing and are comparable to vintage Ludwigs. My one kit is an early 90s 6 piece, 22" bass, 12" and 13" rack toms, and 2 16" floor toms tuned differently with 6.5"×14" snare. I wrapped that in a dark colored textured gator skin wrap. Remo coated ambassadors all around and Remo Starfire mirrored bass resonant head. The second is an early 80s 5 piece, 24" bass, 13" rack, 16" and 18" floors, and 6.5"×14" snare. I wrapped that one in old school green sparkle. Remo black dots on the toms, Remo Emperor coated on the snare and bass batter, and Remo Starfire mirrored bass resonant head. If you have a vintage 80s Tama you have to put a mirrored head on the front of that bass with a black Tama logo 😎 BTW... most of the songs I have on my page were recorded with my 90s Tama Rockstar. Check out the song Meltdown or any of the cover songs I recorded. Those are all vintage Tama
Loved my Tama swing star ⭐️ kit. Was so much better than my First Pearl export kit. I hated the Pearl hardware mounts for the toms. Once I got my Tama kit with the omi mounts I never looked back. Even better my Roland drums are compatible with my old Tama mounts and gear ⚙️ definitely saved me a few $$ from having to buy tom mounts

Chris Andrews i have powerstroke 3s on the kick batters, pprted ebony ambassador on the resonants, no muffling. Toms have emperor clears over hazy ambassador snare resonants, except for the 16 which has a tama 200 resonant

Bought a imperialstar powertoms set with a 24" bass back new in early 80's. Similar setup like this but one bass drum. Always took care of it. Black with black Evan's heads. I work every weekend and there always another drummer that's says what are these? They sound awesome. I say just an old set I refuse to part with.
One of the best sounding kick drums i heard was an 80s 24" superstar(yeah i know different shell) The thing is, the formula for these old Tama kits have a proven track record. Shoot, i see Joey Castillo using an old concert tom imperialstar!
@@WebNstyne I agree. I just use an Evan's Emad head. Nothing inside and a port in front. Kicking the crap out of it for years along with the rest of them. Still use the old anvil cases bought with them.

My latest is bicycle inner tube muffling(on the AW channel) pool noodles also work great, but there is additional hardware to keep it seated. Emads are great, but they have fallen apart on me. i am always happy to talk shop with a fellow Zola coat Luan shell Tama enthusiast!

It was to demonstrate the drums only. I was selling them. Nobody even bit on them because i had rewrapped them in duct tape. I gave them to a friend, he rewrapped them, then gave them back tk me, and now i am selling them to Toxic Holocaust's guitarist
I gave them to a friend of mine. I gave my guitarist an early 80s imperialstar that i also couldn't sell for rhe same price. It is just hard for me to move product, and my pricing is more than fair, people just suck, so i would rather give them to a friend. Shoot, i had a 4 pc artstar 2 that i couldn't even sell for 400. A guy passed because it didn't include the origibal tom arms.
Tama drums are the best drums . They effortlessly sound great It doesn’t matter what tama set you have they are going to sound great .I love being a tama drummer myself
I don't get paid to play any one brand. There are too many good drums out there to limit me to one name. Love Tama, love Pearl, love Yamaha. These drums represent a bygone era, and i wish the formula would be revived
I recently bought a couple of pairs of Promark firegrain sticks, which left brown marks all over my coated pinstripes. White heads (on my black Tama Superstar Hyperdrive) look beautiful, but not with brown dots all over them!
@@emlix1 by the way, coated pinstripes are severely underused! I have them on a couple of my snares, and love it, especially for the being different factor, while sounding awesome
The tone of this set was so good that it took me until about 30 seconds in, to realize there were no cymbals.
It didn't take me that long maybe 10 sec!!!!

The left is an imperialstar, right is a swingstar. Swingstar had 10 lugs on the 24, but not the 22

Those were the Bruner JR sticks. There is still paint residue on my other kits viable with a black light
