Arod and Retzlaff lost this game. BYUs luck has run out. I don't understand why tight ends are grossly underutilized. Defense was great, although time after time, BYU held them to 3rd and long, then could not stop their conversion. This late in the season I don't expect BYUs anemic offense to improve and they will lose more games..
Agree with all the previous comments. The play calling and just the mental readiness of the offense is not there. Retzlaff has not played well the last 2 games. Poor throws, missing wide open receivers, bad audibles, poor red zone decisions, etc. Retzlaff does some things well and you cant question his heart and desire. But the offense simply is not getting it done and i put that on the OC and the head coach.
I love my Cougs, I agree, with you. The tight ends are very skilled, and don’t get used as much as they should. I know that A rod, uses that bunch for the most part as another line man. I’m disappointed in the way they have been used in the last 6 or 7 games.
This loss was a huge hit on BYU's at large playoff chances. If BYU went into the CCG undefeated the playoffs would be clinched. Now they have to win out in order to make the playoffs. And Colorado is playing much better than they are right now. I don't see BYU beating Colorado with the way they are playing right now. They need to take a huge step forward to have a chance of winning this conference.
The false start didn't seal the deal, it was ARods ridiculous play calling. The guy was playing like a field goal was going to win it. Time and time again he proves that he is focused on the wrong things. He was trying to drain the clock when he needed to score a TD. He completely abandoned the lass in this game trying to prove that his team can run the ball. That alone cost BYU 25 points. I'm sick of the "Drain the clock" instead of score points approach to this offence. It could have cost them 2 maybe 3 other games, if it weren't for their defenses. If I was the Hill, I'd be pissed at ARod this week, yelling in his ear "You win games by scoring points!!!!!!!! I want you to score 49 points against A State this week and 70 if possible." Seriously, I don't care if BYU goes 11-1 this season, wins the championship and goes to the playoffs, if ARod keeps this crap up he needs to go. He's a liability.
I do like A ROD but man the slow pace the offense goes a lot of the time drives me nuts. They have wasted multiple timeouts with how fast the offense attemptingbtk start the play.
The OL has struggled with injuries and the unit was poor again. Physicality is lacking. Blitz pickups weak. They have to be better. Next, Jake has to take what the D gives more often. Sometimes that’s the quick underneath to the TE he’s ignoring. I think sometimes Jake looks for the home Runner or the big play a little bit too often and he needs to get in the mindset of moving the chains more frequently to get into more manageable down a distance, especially early in games. He is the reason the tight ends aren’t utilized as much because he doesn’t look to them very often. He needs to change that because some of those quick underneath throws the tights are there. So take them and make the back account for it which means they can’t drop as deep sometimes which will open up better lanes for the wide receivers. So take those early
I have no problem with the field goal in the middle of the third quarter. BYU‘s defense was playing amazing. They knew what they needed to do to keep the Kansas offense in check. Taking the three points would have won the game if a punt didn’t hit a player in the back of the helmet.
If that player used more awareness he would've known it was a punt !! And they are 3-6. I don't care if they are a "good" 3-6. We needed to blow them out and we failed. It's been a fun season but just mentally prepare yourself for the breakdown of the decade for our cougs
Defense came ready to play. Offense flatout SUCKED. There was NO FIRE in the Coaches or the players. The contrast between BYU and Kansas's intensity was black & white. Jake youve been an apologist for ARod for 3 long years now. The last two games was like Ground Hogs Day... ARod trying to bleed the clock instead of punching it in at the end of the game was assinine. The Offense struggled the whole game. Leaving a minute and a half on the clock for Kansas when our D was playing well should have been more preferrable to what ARod did...
Disagree! Although you were right in mentioning that Collins got eaten alive all the way down the field on the first drive, so much so that they yanked him out for two series after that. He did have a timely pick along the sidelines, but the Kansas QB and WR were on different pages and the pass was thrown directly to Collins as the WR continued downfield. Later in the fourth quarter, Kansas had a third and long and Collins ended up one-on-one with a tall WR who went up and high-pointed the catch taking it away from Collins and giving Kansas another set of downs. I noticed that BYU has rotated their DBs more than ever before and maybe they are playing some guys at certain times that shouldn't be playing then. We'll see as the season comes to an end.
I'll admit I agree with most everything that's been said about their performance against KU,at least with the ones who know what they're talking about.
Unfortunately I think the best we can hope for is a good bowl game. ASU looks really good and Colorado will not lose. BYU has had offensive problems all year. Even their high scores were often driven by special teams or defense. The luck ran out but with a couple of better execution on plays they would have won. The end zone interception at the half was a big big mistake. The short pass at the end of the game, another really bad decision. and prior to that the play designs were not good. But it has been a fun year, an exciting year, but the team needs better offensive play design and execution. Gotta love the team though and glad they are in a conference.
This is such a a dumb take. We have a better team than both ASU and CU. Yes they are up and we are down right now but I believe we are a very capable to take care of the conference. Coaches just need to get their game together and Jake just needs to regain his confidence. We will be okay.
You can hate the speed option all you want, the fact of the matter is we had the numbers for it, and we ran the exact play vs Utah and it worked, sometimes you gotta just give the defense credit for making a play🤷🏼♂️
BYU is so close to being in a position to win a lot. With The defense and coaches set now it's time to overhaul the offense like he did the defense hiring Jay and his staff. BYU needs a prolific OC, they have the offensive line coach so not much to change. The play calling has always been bad it's just evident AROD struggles with personnel in important situations. So BYU is close and fans should be excited they have great talent on offense now it's time to get somebody calling plays that can take advantage of this. 9-1 is great but with a great OC this team can get to a championship. There is nothing wrong wanting a different coach doesn't make you a bad person it's the game of Football.
How many plays were correctly made but the offense / QB didnt execute it ? Think about the open reciever that Ratzleff overthrough for a touchdown or he throws a very weak pass in the endzone for an interception. Is it Rodericks fault when that happens?
The Kansas loss could be a good thing for the Cougs. "Be humble. Love and Learn." This year's team has overachieved and been real good. The question remains: "Will they be great?" The opportunity is still there.
If we had a better quarterback we'd be playing him but we don't (probably too late for Bohanon) and I'm pleased with our record with what we've got. Also, I think excellent QBs can make any OC's offense shine so let's get an excellent QB for next season. I think the success of this season so far will attract them.
To much long ball. If you use it to open up underneath fine But I don’t see it. Jake What are the stats for tight ends this year? What are hill’s stats!
Jake needs to settle down and get back into the rhythm he had at the beginning of the season. Time to start looking off receivers. During that interception in the 2nd quarter you had a wide open receiver on the back line of the Endzone. The TE was locked up, but it was also a bad throw. However you throw it to the wide open guy, a bad throw then falls incomplete instead of intercepted.
Been saying it all season: ARod's moronic play calling was going to lose us a game. I'd swear he was calling the plays drunk if it wasn't BYU and he hadn't been calling it like this all season. End of the half with 48 seconds left - 2 timeouts - on the 5 - obvious power run plays to get 5 yards. Except ARod is dumb and calls a back corner fade with an inaccurate QB and it gets picked. 7 points taken away with bad play calling. End of the game - the power run has been working ALL DAY! We have over a minute. ARod tries to get cute with the run game and we lose. Season's shaping up to be a nightmare now if we don't beat AZST. We'd miss the title game, the playoff and ARod would STILL be out OC. If that happens, I'd rather have gone 6-6 and fired him.
We don't need to fire Roderick. We are delusional about our options as OC. every change goes with growing pain. You'll be calling for his replacement before the end of the season.
BYU has to win AZ St., Houston, and Big 12 championship and they're in the playoffs. The thing is, and you touched on this, the offense has fallen asleep. You're right on with the last 23 possessions. The offense looks troubled. And why? The play calling has lost what it had in the 1st couple weeks, especially at home against K-State. Coach Sitake needs to fix the offensive play calling now. Something has switched with the offensive play calling. Retzlaff looks apprehensive and hogtied in what he feels he's allowed to do. The saddest thing about this for me as an alum '02 is that this team is one of the most talented teams in college football, both as a team, and as individual players, especially on defense. They had, and I believe, still have legendary player, team chemistry. Meaning, they individually love the game of football and they love each other as brothers. They play for each other as brothers. So, what's wrong? The OC. The coaching. The coaching was superb beginning of season. They allowed the boys to be themselves and play. They supported them, with their natural talent and ability. So, like so often the case with managers and bosses, when employees make managers and owners look good, the management and owners get scared, wig out about losing what the employees/players have given them and they start to micromanage the employees/players, which causes, makes the employees/players tight, up-tight, and doesn't allow them or enable them to be themselves. Solution: coaches, back off and let the players play. Stop worrying about the pundits, the stress, the talk of playoffs, and everything else. Let the boys play the game they love and simply support them like you did in spring ball and at the beginning the of the season. You can win the remaining 2 reg. season games. You can win the Big 12 Championship, even against Colorado. You have the stuff. Especially the defensive stuff. But you gotta let em play. Don't micromanage them. Coaches, don't take your stress out on them, the players. I ache for the boys, the players. Coaches win or lose championships for their boys, at any level. I've seen it many times. BYU MUST win the Big 12 championship or they're out. Not that the committee wants them out. It's not that. It's that there are other teams and situations waiting in the wings that really would be more deserving to get the playoff spot over BYU. I love my boys. Like I said, I'm an alum, '02. But I'm also a professional business consultant. Therefore I assess objectively and call a spade a spade. Here, now, BYU has to win out, even win the Big 12 Championship to get in. Otherwise they won't. Personally, I have them ranked around 14 right now. Just outside the playoffs, on the bubble. It's sad to me because if they play like they did at SMU and against K-St., they could compete against any. Coach prime lets his boys do what they do. He lets them play. Sitake needs to do the same. Coach Sitake is saying the right things, but his actions, mannerisms, behavior, and feeling the guys feel from him don't match his words the last couple of games. Coach needs to feel them with a feeling of NO DOUBT! From his heart, not faking it. He need to have them feel he knows without a doubt in his heart they can do this. And if he does, they will. This is the difference between a great coach and a championship coach. It took Andy Ried 30+ years and 3 teams to learn this. And now look at him! Retzaff's INT end of 1st half was not him. It was on the coaches. The way they were running the ball, the play caller should have called creative running plays to score. The RPO is THE best friend of BYU's offense. Guys, we can do this! You did it already at the beginning. It's not that other teams have gotten better. It's that you lost your mojo you had earlier. You can get it back! Just play BABY! You got this! You practice it! It's not a fluke. Trust yourself! Trust each other! And go and do it! You will! I have faith in you. But it's not a matter of faith. It's a matter of the practice and hard work you've put in and will put in this week. Now go and execute it at AZ ST., like you did at UCF, SMU, and Baylor. And yes, drop to your knees and ask the Lord, God, your Heavenly Father, to help you execute what you've practiced. And He will bless you. Like He did in the beginning of the season. Then after, give all glory and credit to him. This is truly how life goes. How life is, even if others don't know or understand it, and don't give glory and credit to God. I've tested this scientifically over and over and over again in my life. It's true. It works. He will bless you for your unselfish efforts to glorify Him. But it's got to be for Him, not you. Only you know that in your heart. And your hearts are there. Why? They were there in the beginning. And Retlaff, well, he's got a strong faith in God his father being a great member of his Jewish faith and community. That's really why we wanted him. We're so grateful to have him among our Christian ranks at the Y. He's wonderful. You do what you do brother Jake. Play your game and you'll be fine. Band together brothers and go win for God and the Lord. It is Their will! Just praise them each step of the way. Prayin for you.
They need to balance the team more. I mean use the defense more. Use special teams A LOT more and use offense less. AROD is the weakest link in the coaches offices.
Absolutely agree. Kalani's philosophy of "Be Humble, Love and Learn" has created a cohesive team culture, and good execution makes A-Rod look like a genius. BYU must get back to their basic team culture and execute to have a chance against ASU.
BYU needs to find a better QB. Appreciate Jake’s efforts and attitude. But he’s not good enough to get that offense clicking consistently. The offensive play calling has been a problem. Maybe because Jake is not quick enough getting the ball out with the right timing. The game plan against Kansas was so difficult to watch. Defensive end was amazing! Offensively it was embarrassing. Called plays and the sluggish approach to eat clock, looked cowardly.
Everyone freaking out. Top programs drop games, it happens. The key is to be able to rebound and right the ship. Don’t be mad just trust in what got us here.
The eagles fired there offensive coordinator after a 11-6 season and making the playoffs. At the very least they need to bring roderick some help. His playcalling has always been atrocious. This is nothing new. Just ask utah
BYU choked. Retzlaff throwing that horrible int in the end zone. That flukey punt. Losing to crappy Kansas. No excuses. And they’re gonna choke again at ASU this week. No big 12 championship invite this season. We’ve seen this movie before.
DEION = WINNER!!!! Sitake = Sweet, nice guy If DEION coached BYU , these kids would be playing for a NATTY!!!! There’s a reason why BYU cannot attract a good QB & it starts with the HC & OC!!
Great takes, Jake. Love your UA-cam podcasts!

Offense needs some urgency. Stop running clock until you’re a couple scores up.

Agreed. Players were screwing around the side line after getting stopped by the Kansas D. Kilani needs to whip a little coach boone out
I think the intensity of the Utes game may have taken the wind out of BYUs sails.

@og5981 Big, long diatribe. I still don't get it. "Let the boys play". What does that mean? They do play.
They need to balance the team more. I mean use the defense more. Use special teams A LOT more and use offense less. AROD is the weakest link in the coaches offices.
Give GB a chance.
BYU just isn't a program built to go the distance.
Every 2 loss SEC team was celebrating after this game.
We don’t need new coaching. So let me get this straight. We lose a game and we want coaches fired?
BYU can do it and finish out strong they just need to not settle and go about games to try to win!
BYU offense clearly lost this game. So frustrating BYU clearly better team. That third down call at end of game was a bad call why run right there????
Also “byu” is said way to much on this podcast. Every sentence byu byu. Hard to listen to. Otherwise nice podcast and will continue to listen
All of this commenting has had enough of my time for today.
DEION = WINNER!!!! Sitake = Sweet, nice guy
If DEION coached BYU , these kids would be playing for a NATTY!!!!
There’s a reason why BYU cannot attract a good QB & it starts with the HC & OC!!
