Hi Richard. This weekend I bought my Dual CS-505-1 (purchased in 1982) out of storage, plugged it in and .... nothing. I then found your wonderful Part 1 & Part 2 UA-cam videos and can report a very successful couple of hours spent dismantling, cleaning, fresh lubrication and reassembling. My beloved turntable now works beautifully again. I just wanted to say thanks!
Yeah... nothing worse for an electromechanical device than abandoning it an attic or shed for decades, but an enormous number of people did just that with the advent of CD.
Hi Neil, Thanks - no smoke from mine but the board had come away hence it would not work - Its now being "road tested" in my office at home and working well to date. Warm regards Richard
Hi Richard, well done, very informative and helpful. One small error in your video. The Dual 505 wasn't introduced until the early 1980s, so the 'date' on the platter mat, isn't actually a date, probably a part number or ref. My mat is stamped 1954 2, which interestingly is the month and year of my birth, but I know they weren't producing the 505 then :-) Thanks again, Geoff
I got my old Dual 505-2 out. It will not start to turn. I want to access the lower portion of the unit but am embarrassed to admit I don't don't know how to accomplish that feat. Do I have to remove the staples along the outer edge? Thanks so much.
Richard. I am having terrible trouble getting my 505-2 to actually engage the motor when I bring the arm across. At best it is temperamental. At worst it just does not work. I have taken it to be fixed but it still fails to move if it is not in almost constant use. Can you help?
Hi Richard, I found your video while searching for a repair shop for my Dual CS505-2 which I bought in 1987 and have loved using ever since. The problem is that it has suddenly started playing very slow and the speed changer seems to make little or no difference, other than that it is in excellent condition and has never given me any problems, Do you have any ideas what the problem could be?
Hi Richard, Good video! Obvious question, I have a Dual CS 505-4 and it seems to be smoking! I have ordered a replacement drive belt because the other one had perished but there is a slight smell and visual smoke which appears when it is turned on! I therefore need to remove the top cover and check to see where the smoke is coming from. Could you tell me how to remove the top plate? I have loosened both screws which normally release the springs, but it does not seem to want to come free. Any advice greatly appreciated. Cheers, Robin.
Robin Perko hello. Do you solve that issue (the smoke from motor) with the new belt?? l have the same problem with mine 505-4 . Thanks in andvance and sorry for the delate..
Your pronunciation is interesting. "strode" should be 'strobe' and "Tech-neeks" should be 'Tech-niks' (Technics). Also I can't find Part II, and I'd like to know how to get the turntable base out of the surround, mine seems to be stuck at one of the srews, on the RH side.
I don't mind your waffle if the whole video was you just talking I wouldn't care I like talkng videoed have you been reguarly watching my videos you don't comment very much! Keep the videos coming Richard we love them! .george F
Hi Richard very interesting info from you on the Dual 505 deck. Can you help me please? My deck has been in storage for some time and now will not work when powered up. Most comments on this subject indicate the switch that powers up the motor when the arm is moved over to play being stuck. I would hope to sort this myself but cannot see how to gain access to the switch or any of the internal mechanics. Can you advise me how to gain access please?
Hi there, I have a Dual 505-4, which I thought I had repaired, but the turntable refuses to turn again. When it did work briefly, it would only play 33 1/3. Any suggestions and do you do repairs?
Richard - do you have the pt.2 for the Dual 505-2 video series you did. I can't find it on youtube and was eager to see that part. Also I just bought this same table and have just run it plugged in without connecting to the full setup yet. When the platter is spinning I hear a tick...tick...tick - once on every full rotation of the platter. Inspecting the underneath of the platter I noticed that there is a small diagonal piece of plastic where the belt goes around the center circle and I believe that hits a small little movable piece on the board. Seems purposeful. Best way I can describe it. Is this normal and should I hear that 'tick' once every revolution? Thanks for any help, Mike
Michael Johnson Hi Michael The plastic bit is the piece to catch the return the arm when the record has finished - the ticking could be the belt catching due to wear maybe as no sound should be heard. I think I moved Pt 2 due to copyright - I have searched my archive but can't find it as I have changed computer since 2012. Hope this helps Warm regards Richard
Richard Macintyre Richard - thanks for the reply. I figured out the issue. A slightly sticky mechanism at location I suspected. Nothing wrong with the belt. I have another question. I am struggling to figure out how the tonearm up/down mechanism works. Mine does not and when I look at the parts I can quite make out how the arm that goes from the tonearm lever should be connected at each end or what it should rest on. It is connected at the center via a small spring loaded plastic piece that locks in place. Do you have any pictures of the underneath on the 505-2. I can't seem to find any online that show this well and the service manual isn't really any help. Mike
Michael Johnson Hi Michael - I have checked my pictures and nothing about the arm lift - it can be a tricky one as the lift is in a tube with oil to damp the lowering and rising. May not be able to help on this one as I can't remember how I got mine going - unless I take it apart again - which as I am using it would be not much fun. Warm regards Richard
Hi - Yes the belt runs up on the spindle when you change the speed - a arm moves this so the belt moves. Some times the belt gets slack and will not move so you can take the turntable off and move it manually. Or buy a Duel new belt. Warm regards Richard
EBay bought the Leaf spring 102 How I component that you have a picture. Because according to what I found online that does not work. What you meant little belt
I don't think the four-digit number on the bottom of the mat indicates the date of manufacture. From what I can tell, the Dual 505-2 was not manufactured before 1984. The rubber mat on my Dual 1264 has "1957" on the underside. It was purchased new around 1980.
Hi Richard. I am restoring a Dual 505-1 which was delivered to me in parts. I was wondering if you know where the black wire from the motor goes towards the switch plate circuit board. On your record player the black wire is connected to the same pin (1) where the green wire has to be connected. But i am not sure myself because i can't find any information about it in the service manual. Additional: is part two of the Dual 505-2 (1984-89) still available? I can't seem to find it on UA-cam.
Having serviced Dual for years at the retail level and being the owner of several 1229, a 701 and a 741...I do not understand the attraction to these, especially when at least stateside one can buy vastly superior Rega's and Systemdek's for nearly the same money. The Plessey Garrard DD75 is a delightful unit, especially when the Plessey cap's are replaced and on occasion can be had for under $100 dollars on Ebay
Re Dual dating; the number under the turntable mat is not date- related, and it is a 'strobe' light, not strode, used for checking turntable speed. Other than that, you have a pleasant voice but would be nice to see a bit more of the workings rather than hear about your train travels.

You are my Hero, picked up a Dual 1237 and had no clue how to set it up, you video got me playing and enjoying my old vinyl in less than half an hour!
Another enjoyable video. Thanks to you (and Mr. Panasonic)
Thanks for this. Very clear. I must get mine out of the loft and see if it still works.

richard, you saved my day! excellent video. bless you
Glad to see you mention Paul.

Hi Scott
I use a mix of 3 in one and graphite oil - I use gearbox grease for other parts.

Sounds like a oil and a new belt is the problem at first glance.
Hope this helps
