What tools would you recommend as a starting point for the budding home mechanic? (besides really basic things like Allen/ torx keys, pumps etc) Are cassette tools, BB wrenches, headset presses essential first pieces of kit, or maybe things like a stool, nice workstand, or tool wall are more important? What couldn't you live without in your workshop?

#askgmbntech Hi Doddy, I was looking at getting a new enduro bike for racing and general use, when I ride trails I tend to ride hard and would like an aggressive and fast bike that can handle rough use. Love the channel!

Wait until the market tries to sell you a trigger shifter that is slower and looks bulky but says a bunch of crap to make it sound good......oh wait !!!
Now wait until the market tries to sell you a bigger wheel saying a bunch of crap so sell...oh wait !!!
Now wait until the market tries to eliminate the bar ends even though they work great...oh wait !!!
Now until the market tries to sell you a seatpost that can be height adjusted on the fly even though normal seatposts have been used for decades with no problems.....oh wait !!!

I also had so many pedals and they always made some sort of noise. I use platform and found that the Race Face Atlas are the best even though the small bearings might give out a bit sooner than expected. They also did make clicking sound during each revolution, and reason was that from factory the small outboard bearings are simply pushed in without any grease. I made sure to set each bearing in grease so there is a grease barrier between the pedal body and bearing. No more noise! This will be problem with most pedals which utilize sealed bearings. No matter how accurate the machining is there will always be a little bit of movement when giving it some power.

Clutch explaination is light in my opinion: I wish you explain why friction is applied only in one direction. Indeed, as it become older, shim clutch system tend to lock rotation in both direction... I never really managed to understand why and had hard time to fix it.

kerosene is really good because it’s safe and doesn’t have any vapor. But because of that you have to wait for it to drip off or better yet, I use wax so when heated the kerosene rises and I don’t need to clean my chain or the solvent so I spend 0 time cleaning anything but the process does take some time about 20 minutes every 2-3 weeks to do 1 chain or 10 chains. So it’s great for people with many bikes or chains.

Doddy in reply to the fork creek it can also be the stanchions into the crown I was talking to a suspension service company because mine do it and it happens because the crown slightly oxidises and allows the steerer or stanchions to move very very slightly and therefore a creek but it can be fixed by taking it to where you get your forks serviced and ask if they can sort it some places have the tools some don’t but all they do it press the steerer or stanchions out the crown then add a compound that I don’t know what is but it stops this oxidation and the creek

#askgmbntech Hi doddy, I have a question on drivetrain: why with the advent of 1x set up there are no big manufacturers going to fixed hub and front freewheel on the crank? This setup will give the possibility to change gear without pedaling, better weight distribution, and it is easier and cheaper to change a freewheel on the crank rather than the rear hub.

Hey Doddy I'm thinking of getting new wheels. Should I get a mid-range wheelset (X1700) or a posh rear wheel (XR1501). Are better front wheels noticable or would a really good rear wheel make a noticable performance increase (36t vs. 18t). I'm only getting DT Swiss because I want to get XT M8100 when it comes out.

10:12 gripshit ha ha ha never heard that. Did use them, no complaints. Sram 7.0 though. Accidental gear change is practically non-existent. Maybe once or twice in 2 years. Not best soolution for massive long hands. It can be hard for squizing narrow shifter, in rain with no gloves especially problematic. For normal hands - no noticable downsides.

Grip shifts=blisters and if you use gloves there pretty unconfortable. Maybe its different for some people but I preferrer regular shifters

#askcalvin two people sitting next to one another who are known for their distinctive hair (granted we're talking lip and scalp respectively). How regularly do you maintain yours, what products do you use, and would you consider swapping?

#askcalvin Can you change out the FIT Grip damper in something like a FOX 36 Performance fork for the higher end FIT4 or GRIP2 and effectively making it a Performance Elite model?
And are the charger 2 damper upgrade kits from 2018 usable on the new 2019 DebonAir Yari Fork?

Eric Sjöström yes you can do that. The yari has the externals between both years. So the damper would fit from 2018 to 2019. Fox you can do the same. All the different models use the same chassis. So you can swap the dampers as you like to the better one

In my old wheel i want to take my freehub off, but it needs a tool with 2 notches to fit into the freehub body and unscrew it. What tool do i need?

#askgmbntech I want to buy a coil shock but can’t find one with the same lengths. There is one with a shorter eye to eye hole but longer stroke length. How would this affect the bike and is there any for my bike that will specifically fit (Vitus Sommet VRS 2018)

#askgmbntech Hey Doddy, the creak could also be the fork stanchions that may need removal from the crown and to be re-set
Ive seen a suspension specialist deal with these all the time with creaks from forks

#askcalvin I recently acquired an old retro bike with a 1 inch threaded headset and a single piece crankset. I want to convert this to a 2 or three piece crankset and a threadless fork. Is this possible to do and do you have any advice on doing it?
