  • "The idea of being able to make a thing that didn't exist before...that's one of the coolest things you can do."
In episode 2 of Employee Rides, we get to hear from Joe McCollough about his 1930 Model A Ford project.
At 23 years old, a younger Joe had giant aspirations. So much so, he spent first paycheck out of college on the body and dreamed of finishing his vision in a single year.
One might be tempted to fault the younger Joe for flying too close to the sun, but we've all been that crazy about a car. Most of us still are.
Today, Joe's vision looks a little different, but he’s set on transforming his 1930 Ford Model A into something that could drive off the pages of a late 50s hot rod magazine.

One of the truest UA-cam videos. The storyline and feeling resonate with the majority of hot rodders out there. I’m 69 and in the last couple of years I finally got to drive my 30 A sedan. I met the car when I was 19 and finally got to own it when I was around 55. I did most of the work myself in my garage (filled with all sorts of stuff). We don’t have a team to help us. No 4 week deadline. No camera crew. Not every tool from the tool truck. We work with what we have or what we can find. Limited resources to buy things help garner your ingenuity and creativeness. Sitting in an unfinished hot rod making car noises is normal. Enjoy the process. It’s worth it!

I had a 1930 Chevrolet 1 1/2 ton truck that took me 10 years to put together.i kept plugging away at it. Painted it with shaker cans in a one car garage. It was truly a love/hate relationship. If I had any idea what I was doing it would have made such a difference. But it was fun and something not everybody gets to experience. Your family will have such a great legacy to share with your car.

Life is about the journey, not the destination. That is what I have learned. Great video and thanks for sharing.

Great video. I am building a 1923 Model T roadster with a Disney theme. A rolling work of art. Keeping the victorian look with lots of brass and a DISNEY flare. I to cant wait till she is done. BUT half the fun of the destination is the journey. When your ride is done enjoy the smiles it will generate. With all the parts I am buying from Speedway I am helping to put your kids through college. :) Dont skimp on the detail to rush to the road you will regret it. I can tell you wont.

Joe may I ask what size are your tires and wheels? I’m building a 1930 Model A pickup. Also I have a Vega steering box, what is best way to center pitman arm so drag link will be centered?

They are 450/475-16 fronts (www.speedwaymotors.com/Coker-Tire-633500-Firestone-Blackwall-Bias-Ply-Tire-450-475-16,106452.html) and the rears are 7.50-16 (www.speedwaymotors.com/Coker-Tire-682300-Firestone-Blackwall-Bias-Ply-Tire-7-50-16,106491.html). The standard answer for just about any box is to count the turns from lock to lock, then divide in half to center. I believe our Vega boxes are 5 turns lock to lock, so turning the input 2 and a half turns from full lock will center it, but you should count the turns on your box because some are different.
