My husband's getting out of the army and, after moving every year for the last seven years, trying to figure out where to settle down has been OVERWHELMING! This video helped me a lot. Thank you!
Thank you for this video! I am in a stage in my life where I think I need to relocate to a different area for my own happiness. I'm kind of overwhelmed at the logistics of the entire thing and I appreciate how down to Earth this video is. Thanks again
I watch your YNAB videos and just stumbled across this video. Pretty sure I know where you're talking about cause I grew up there. Welcome to the area!
True to your channel name in making this decision. Ugg... we just up and moved to a Caribbean without ever being here or knowing anything about it. One thing about is moving is that it one of those decisions that is easily undone. You'll like it there. We left Panama City Beach to move to the Caribbean.
My favorite area of the country! When my son got to train at Keesler, I was fortunate to visit often. We would always go to Mobile and Pensacola! You are blessed for sure! When my husband retired from law enforcement, we moved from super hot Arizona to southern Idaho. Very pretty here, and it is exploding with people. When my youngest graduates, I’d like to look at the Gulf Coast but if one of my kids has kids, that may change things...
Yes! Pensacola is a great. We spent a few weeks there in 2019 and had a great time. We love this area too. But totally understand the desire to be close to family, that's a big reason we're on the East side of the country. Hopefully you can come back and visit at least! Idaho is pretty awesome too though, we love it. Thanks for watching Kendra.
Excellent timing! Had a friend text me this week about a job opening in my specialty at an academic hospital within her health system in Dallas, Texas! The wife and I have been pondering what a move would look like across the country should I apply to the position. Family would be the big one for us, we are within 2 hours of family and Chicago, so moving to Dallas where we only know one couple would be a huge change! Cost of living (way higher) and commute (10 min now vs potentially 35-50 min) another! It is very hard as an analytical person to know at some point you have to look at the “soft” (family, friends, atmosphere, “feel”, culture, job satisfaction) reasons/line items vs the “hard” (salary, benefits, climate, budget, CoL, commute, crime)!
No way! Yeah that’s a tough decision to make for sure and a ton of things to consider! Totally understand the toughness due to family proximity. And definitely a bug change in weather as well! Lots to think through and probably great pros and cons on either side. Best of luck on the decision making!
You guys are such a charismatic couple! And excellent advice and video structure. What a breath of fresh air between the cringe 'Hit that like button now before we continue' type of videos 🙄❤️
Fantastic video! It's a potentially stressful decision, and seeing your dog doing her zen master sprawl sleep, reminded me not to take it too seriously.
Great topic! I’m contemplating this at age of 63 nearing retirement. Thinking of 55+ retirement community, renting instead of buying. Maybe VaBeach, Charlottesville, Va., just close enough to my daughters & definitely live in slow pace area. I’d like to get away from Northern Va traffic.
How do you determine adequate healthcare/hospitals in a new area? Is there a certain rating system for hospitals like GreatSchool ratings are for schools?
Great tips, thank you guys for making videos like these, they are very helpful. Our family of 4 currently live in a fifth wheel(going on 3 yrs), we don't know where life will take us next but I like watching your channel and others for tips🙂
So many good tips and reminders! The concept that took me decades to realize is "If I actually *get* most of my check list, who will, by societal default, be in my close community?" That level of privilege (dep on your list) may not lend itself to living amongst a population with any diversity. #bubble😊 (Which may be what some folks want...)
@@63Lsp Totally right, that's another huge thing to consider and make sure you think through based on your goals and priorities. I think that's a great question that most people don't ask!
@@63Lsp Exactly! And it can be a hard one to juggle. I moved to a place based mostly on demographics; multi-cultural, diverse, mixture of socio-economic situations, etc. Downside is there's a lot of crime, and lack of nature. The lack of nature is the thing that's beginning to really get to me, but I love the diverse range of people. So, it's hard to get everything.
New Subscriber....Nice video and LA is a very nice place! Just found your channel a couple days ago and have watched about 12 or so of your YNAB videos the last couple of days. I'm a numbers guy too and you've convinced me I can probably (maybe, I hope, ha ha) figure YNAB out with some trial and error. Two quick YNAB questions if I may please. Once I accomplish the basics and can move around YNAB fairly well, about how much time do you spend on your own YNAB account each week to stay on top of things? Second, do you feel the PC or MAC version of YNAB is better and easier to work with? Thanks so much and I wish you two well! You're well on your way at such a young age.
Not for us because of family. We've got friends who've moved internationally and loved it, but our #1 priority was < 8-hour drive to family in TN. So that helped limit our discussions. We found that setting clear non-negotiables helps you narrow down the decision-making. But definitely a lot of cool places abroad!
It sounds like you say "We finally settled in LA" - but then show Alabama. I listened to it twice. I then listened to about 5 minutes in. And then read your description. Still no idea where you moved. Next time pls don't swallow your words.
Nice video Nick! Guys I recommend having strong financial backup when taking decisions like this, currently I invest in Crypto has the best profit so far

Pup dog is obviously in his blissful place!
Haha she most definitely is!
Take into account
1. Cost of living
2. Community

5. Proximity
6. Schools
7. Type of city big or small or rural
8. Traffic and walkability
9. Your budget
10. Your timeline
11. Your flexibility is it gonna make you have more or less flexibility
And good churches!
Totally with you on that retiree lifestyle and Gulf coast beaches. I was staring at Margaux passed out the whole video. LOL
Haha she’s hilarious. And glad to hear you like that too!

Private vs Public schools in regards to housing is a major ninja tip. Pay attention to this people.
It's a definite hidden thing that a lot of people don't think about. I'm glad Heidi brought it up to me.
It's One of the 1st things I looked at when considering a new location recently. Definitely want the private school option
This was my favorite part and it made me understand things a bit differently
I've followed you for years, and I live in Fairhope!
Excellent video, thanks so much! Well nade 😊
Thanks!
8:30 Very helpful. Thank you!
Glad you liked it!
I live in Gulf Shores, and your town is my go-to when the beach fills up. :) Welcome to Alabama!
We love Gulf Shores! Been going there since I was a kid.

welcome to bama! I live in west alabama, and love watching your videos!
We loved it!
Oohhh puppa was such a good prop, totally heard you guys speak, but seriously gorgeous puppa had my entire attention. 🐕
haha, so glad you enjoyed seeing her, she's hilarious :)
I wish every dog could have as good a life as yours obviously do. So cute to see the little one absolutely sacked out in Hanna's arms.
Lots of things we didn’t consider. Great tips as usual. We went for rural land and a lake!
Thanks Josh! Rural + lake is a great choice. 💪
Excellent point Heidi made and true for the area in PA where I live.
I thought she made a great point too!
Great video guys. We just went through this process a couple years ago and ended up in Florida from California, it was a great move for us.
Thanks Kari! That's a great move. Florida is fantastic, so glad it was a good move for you!
Thank you so much! I am looking to move in about 2yrs after my son graduates high school, and this video has helped me figure out how to decide where.
Congrats guys!!! Excited to visit LA!
It's a great place to be :)
This is extraordinarily helpful and perfect timing for me! Thanks so much
Thanks so glad it was good timing!

Great video. Lots to think about and discuss for sure. Thank you
Hey thanks Eleanor, good to see you :)
Awesome video guys! Thank you for the ideas!
Thanks Heath! Really appreciate it man.
Your dog made me subscribe!
Thanks :) she's glad to hear it!

Thanks!

LA?!?! Oh!
Lower Alabama is where it’s at :)

Y’all moved to my home state
I'm trying to pay attention but seeing your adorable pup knocked out is distracting. He is soo cute.
Haha she’s a mess! She’s only got two speeds, passed out or wide open crazy.
@@mappedoutmoney Is her name Margot, not Marco? I kept hearing Marco.

Did any international options come up in your discussions?

We found that setting clear non-negotiables helps you narrow down the decision-making.

One aspect is earthquakes vs hurricanes :-).
Haha yes, everywhere has their natural disasters!
I absolutely cannot live with the humidity one more summer. I won’t physically or mentally survive GA’s long hot summers. No more southern states 🥵
It's certainly not for everyone! We personally can't stand the cold, so I'll take humidity anyday. But I totally understand where you're coming from.
You missed healthcare? Proximity to hospitals?
Ahh yes, of course! Proximity to hospitals is huge. And we did take that into account for us. We’re fairly close to some good hospitals.
Surprised you didn’t choose NC🤣 Everyone else does!😅😅
haha, NC was on the list, but again - east coast beaches < gulf coast beaches :)
We do love NC though!
I stopped listening when I realized how deep that puppy was sleeping. 😬😂
It sounds like you say "We finally settled in LA" - but then show Alabama. I listened to it twice. I then listened to about 5 minutes in. And then read your description. Still no idea where you moved. Next time pls don't swallow your words.
