Games are more and more using facial capture of real living actors. Recent female characters aren't being masculinized; previous female characters were being over-feminized. Games are going away from overly feminized women characters to naturalistic women characters. The women characters you think are the norm are, in fact, not the norm.
Not really. In many big budget Western games the male characters resemble their actual models while the female characters tend to look off. So they're not consistent with regards to their faithfulness to the model's likeness in many cases.

This was like when the second Horizon game came out and people were complaining about Aloy being 'ugly' and I was just like ' nah her face seems more realistic and less game character now' There are cases where character designers have made characters look a certain way to try and dissuade the 'male gaze' and have made characters look worse in doing so. Harley from the Arkham series into Kill the Justice League for instance. Or do it at the start but the DOOM Dark Ages lady doesn't look like that's the case, so it's a case of people just being blind and dumb.

Two things, there’s some nuance to this. People are upset over female video game characters being unattractive, but additionally people are upset about female video game characters being made too masculine. The girl in the example isn’t unattractive, but she isn’t attractive in a feminine way. It was the same with the girl from GTA VI. It’s not that she’s ugly but that she’s too masculine.

And in both cases, each side relies on a bespoke array of anecdotes (falsely labelled as evidence) to back up their claim that an individual example is something sinister (applying a general to a specific is bad logic), throwing out the agency and interests of the creators in the process. I guarantee that Stellar Blade and Rivals have done far more to promote attractive character designs than the totality of all internet complaints about characters not being attractive enough, because what people want to buy - whether it be games or skins - is ultimately what matters.

Witcher 4 is many years away so we’ll have to wait and see how that goes, to me a dev is as good as their last release, phantom liberty was their last release, so i’m optomistic that witcher 4 will be a great game, but who knows it could turn out to be a real fumble, lets hope not.

I get your criticism in this particular example but it would be dumb to ignore the overall pattern of masculinized female characters in Western games.
Games are more and more using facial capture of real living actors. Recent female characters aren't being masculinized; previous female characters were being over-feminized. Games are going away from overly feminized women characters to naturalistic women characters.
The women characters you think are the norm are, in fact, not the norm.
Not really. In many big budget Western games the male characters resemble their actual models while the female characters tend to look off. So they're not consistent with regards to their faithfulness to the model's likeness in many cases.

Ugly or not, I'm surprised that Doom will have a story with actual characters this time. As for AC, Ubisoft always had pretty bad animations in their games. So, while exaggerated, those people do have some points, albeit their examples are poor.

This was like when the second Horizon game came out and people were complaining about Aloy being 'ugly' and I was just like ' nah her face seems more realistic and less game character now'
There are cases where character designers have made characters look a certain way to try and dissuade the 'male gaze' and have made characters look worse in doing so. Harley from the Arkham series into Kill the Justice League for instance. Or do it at the start but the DOOM Dark Ages lady doesn't look like that's the case, so it's a case of people just being blind and dumb.
Why would you think “realistic” is good in a video game character? If I wanted realistic I would go outside.

Grown men who obsess over the 'sexiness' of imaginary characters are very, very odd. There's no shortage of Korean/Chinese live service titles they can play full of ultra sexualized 'waifus', I'm not sure why they're trying to censor devs who don't like those designs.

Two things, there’s some nuance to this. People are upset over female video game characters being unattractive, but additionally people are upset about female video game characters being made too masculine. The girl in the example isn’t unattractive, but she isn’t attractive in a feminine way.
It was the same with the girl from GTA VI. It’s not that she’s ugly but that she’s too masculine.

@@bingusdingus39 depends on if it’s an act of hostility/disrespect from the developers. With how often it’s happening and with what devs are saying on Twitter/Bluesky, you start to notice things.
"She's too masculine" is an entirely personal preference. She's clearly within the realm of what would be considered attractive by a tonne of people. Creators shouldn't have their work slandered for not catering to someone's tastes. This is as bad as the people who are ultra-offended by Marvel Rivals' using sexy character designs.
And in both cases, each side relies on a bespoke array of anecdotes (falsely labelled as evidence) to back up their claim that an individual example is something sinister (applying a general to a specific is bad logic), throwing out the agency and interests of the creators in the process.
I guarantee that Stellar Blade and Rivals have done far more to promote attractive character designs than the totality of all internet complaints about characters not being attractive enough, because what people want to buy - whether it be games or skins - is ultimately what matters.
