I love how you talked to Eteri. Tarasova and Morozov skated brilliantly in the free, maybe one of their best ever skates. Alexa and Brandon were also really impressive. Their throw triple loop was truly just as extraordinary as T/M's, I actually preferred it in the free. They are new, but they have a lot of raw talent and athleticism. Speaking of throws, not one of Jessica and Brian's best elements, which also played a factor in their SP score. I agree that Alexa and Brandon's SP was great and suits Alexa's feisty personality and I pay no mind to random people on here who aren't into the music. House of the Rising Sun is energetic and edgy and I loved it.
Agreed, I love the House of the Rising Sun for Alexa and Brandon's short program! I think it'll stand out from the sad emo ballads most pairs seem to be using. And their throw loop is stunning 😍 one of the best out there. On the other side, Jessica Calalang continues to amaze me on how she manages to land that wonky throw Lutz. It's practically sideways in the air.
I imagine Eteri was in Michigan visiting her daughter en route to Cranberry. Tarasova & Morozov's solo jumps are too far apart from each other but they did have a great skate.
I was there at the Cranberry Cup too. I saw you there. My first event live. It was wonderful. Beautiful skating complex. Things I noticed off the ice- Brandon Frazier claps for everyone skating and has a definite‘we’re all in this together’ attitude. Mariah was very charming and funny at the awards ceremony. She seemed unperturbed about her performance here. Yaroslavl Paniot barely warmed up for his free program, actually sat watching the other skaters most of the time and Todd wasn’t concerned about it. Also I was sitting next to a bunch of kids who were wearing something like New Team Development shirts. A guy arrived and plopped two judges with them and the judges commented and quizzed the kids about the pair’s performances. Didn’t realize judges were so hands on.
Congratulations on attending your first live figure skating event! What a perfect venue and great roster of skaters. I love seeing these exceptional athletes live, especially the pairs. I agree about Brandon.
Absolutely! She’s made remarkable adjustments and progress over the past few years. She’s on track to peak (for this season) at the Olympic games. I’m looking forward to it!
imo, it's not just the programs that are bad for Mariah's olympic year; she still can't do a 3-3 w/o it looking like a struggle, and the consistency isn't there.
Alysa has come so far. Yes there’s still a lot of work to do but her strength is that she’s a fierce competitor and that’s why I think she will make the team 3A or no 3A.
FYI - there are a few Cranberry Cup videos taken by someone in the audience, and they're decent. They were not downloaded from that horrible video feed. The channel is Alexa On Ice.
I really enjoy Alyssa’s attitude and her skating. I respect that she can lay down a great performance under pressure! But, she really needs some intensive ballet studio work to improve her upper body carriage and the extension of her arms. I think better alignment and lift through her upper body, shoulders, and arms would reduce some of the drag on her speed. Also, that FP music is very formal. So, she needs to skate it in a more formal style, like an elegant Queen!
I think a lot of the women skaters who had 3As (Rika, You Young, Wakaba Higuchi) are having trouble with the 3A. Many skaters have trouble with it, as it is the most difficult triple, or outright most difficult jump element.
She already had it back at eteri show back in what March or April? She jumped it there as far as I know, so she landed it already this year, the question is if she got it stable again
@Skate Lover oh honey, let me tell you a secret: we are creating an underground society whose only goal is to make sure Kostornaia goes to the Olympics. We are willing to bribe, intimidate or do whatever it takes to get her there.
Tarasova is too good for Mozorov. She is light, she is ethereal, the height and leg positions she gets on assisted holds, she almost reminds me of Costner (yes I know Costner is a singles skater), I mean how Costner could pull a position and engage you right into the moment. She creates the magic for this team. He is so strong, but he always looks like a big ginger bear.
There's no way they're not sending Alysa to Nebelhorn. Obviously it's still early, but she's in a really good spot to make the Olympic team. I think Amber has close to no shot of making it unless she gets better material and solidifies the 3A. Same with Mariah, she has to get rid of these programs and do amazingly well on the Grand Prix if she wants a chance of making the team.
Totally agree. It’s gonna take some incredible performances for Amber to be given a spot over Bradie, Karen, or Alysa. You can count on Bradie and Alysa to skate clean enough rotation wise so the others have to be perfect.
I love Amber's skating, but I think you're right. Alysa has really matured and finally skates like a senior ladies' contender. Mariah's programs don't suit her at all. She needs a Come to Jesus moment to have any hope for this season.
Honestly nothing about Amber's skating is all that great. She emotive, but only uses that on weepy ballads and is packaged poorly as well. I think it's between Karen and Mariah for the third spot. Mariah seriously needs to put in some work and maybe think of going back to her old programs.
I’ve been waiting for this! Dave, while watching the feed I heard you laugh during one of the Zamboni breaks. Sounded like you were having a great time!
I feel like P/C and S/K are very much in a virtue moir/Davis and white 2014 moment where s/k have been in the judges face improving and gaining momentum in the last 2 years compared to P/C being injured/ withdrawing etc the early comps are going to be crucial for p/c will very much need to feel like a breath of fresh air to start momentum early in the season!
50:50 Olga Mikutina was Ukrainian by birth, not Russian. She moved to Austria as a tween because, like seemingly most Ukrainian skaters these days, she wanted out of Ukraine.
To me Mariah’s long program is even more offensive than the short. The vibe is so wrong for an Olympic free skate. It reminds me of Mirai and the winner takes it all. It comes across like a depressing goodbye to your career.... especially when skated poorly! She has no choice now but to go back to Halleluia which is unfortunate because she’ll never recreate that nationals moment. I hate sounding so negative but I really thought she’d have a better season being the underdog. It’s just so disappointing.
I dunno I do LOVE Both Sides Now. I think its actually right for her. but her jumps are not there right now. her 2axel looks great and she is clearly working on height but her landings were all off. I hope she gets it all toegther by nationals. hopefull.
@@marycoyne1889 I don’t have anything against the song itself. I guess I just don’t like it for skating at all. Feels like it’s repeating one note the entire 4 minutes. No change in tempo, no build whatsoever. It would be tough to draw the audience in even if she was landing her jumps, but skating to something so melancholy and botching all the jumps leaves the audience cringing. I’m with you, I hope she can get it together because she really can be lovely. I just don’t think this is the vehicle.
This was a great competition! You're right that Alexa is more confident and secure with Brandon. They are steady, tenacious, and recover from small errors well. As long as they make the Olympic team, I'm fine with whoever else the US sends. The other pairs are too hot and cold and untested to pick a definitive one. I tend to prefer Calalang/Johnson over Cain/LeDuc because despite the fact that their jumps are weaker under pressure they have stronger pair elements, except for maybe the throws where both teams might be even. C/L have made plenty of major jump errors too, but they can't fall back on pair elements as much.
"eteri manservant" so ignorant and disrespectful. pavel slyusarenko is one of the best junior coaches in the world (probably the best). his students have the unrivalled pair elements. just look at panfilova/rylov twists, lifts and throws. nobody in history of figure skating had that quality of pair elements. if tarasova/morozov will achieve success this season, the most credit should be given not to eteri/trankov, but to pavel. transfering him from perm to eteri camp in moscow was the smartest move that eteri ever did, and the fact that dave lease never heard of this coach says it all about his knowledge of pair skating.
what’s funny is that they have been raving about p/r’s elements for years, especially at the last Rusnats, and they don’t even know who their coach is? “eteri’s manservant” is literally the reason why t/m have stabilized their throws and brought their 3f throw back over the summer. facepalm… i do think it’s sad though that eteri has him at sambo 70, wish he stayed in perm
Alysa Liu is great at competing. Even last season, when she had some bad outings, she didn't seem down. I never understood, how was she pulling that difficult content from zero speed and low hight. Even now with the less difficult jumps, she gets it done. somehow! she has improved a lot on other fronts. She's always exciting to watch.
I thought the judges lowballed Madeline here (not that she should have won or anything). Pleased by her costumes this year, and what I could see of the programs.
Same. Obviously we haven't seen Karen and Bradie compete this season, but both Amber and Mariah had unfortunate outings with questionable material, while Alysa really delivered here.
I'll be honest, I tried to give Mariah's programs a chance but, I don't like either of them 😭! I really wish she'd just use Hallelujah again for the free. Not sure about the short, maybe use the Britney Spears program again? Also, just curious but did Mariah break up with her boyfriend? I never see her posting anything with or of him anymore. Not trying to be rude, but just curious.
Any chance Jonathan remembers what the paint color is for his bricks in the background? We’re painting, and that color would be perfect. It’s grayish blue but not gray, you know, and Jonathan and I have similar taste. Sherwin Williams? Porter?
I agree I kind of see Sui and Han more likely getting bronze than gold, they’re amazing but we keep forgetting they’ve been competing on the GP since 2010. That’s a lot of skating under their belt. I hope the stars align but I could see the Russians sweeping in Beijing.
@Davin I respectfully disagree about anything being "fixed" for Sui and Han at Beijing 2022. However, yes, as long as they skate clean with new programs and be as great as they are, they'll win without any help from the home country or judges.
@@nenavujicin7882 Last season wasn't even a real season. Many skaters were unable to train properly, due to restrictions in countries with borders and waiting on vaccines and many other things beyond their control. Ice rinks were shut down or used like a morgue like in Spain. Only those who were competing throughout the season and had access to ice and coaches (Russia, pretty much; USA had some places open, and the rest may have just been private rinks) had the best time. Also, Sui/Han were injured. To even get a World silver after his back surgery and having little time to actually train is a testament to their skill and level above everyone else.
Agree with Dave about Alysa. She did well here, no doubt about it, and the improvement is clear to everyone. But she's still a junior-looking skater at this point.
@@TheSkatingLesson Meanwhile, Mariah is a "GRAND-MOM" looking skater at this point. She should retire. It's very clear at this point. Mariah cannot skate anymore. She never skates well before. What was the highest placement for Mariah at Worlds? Karen Chen was placed at 4th place TWICE at worlds. Meanwhile, Mariah was placed at embarrassing 12th position TWICE at worlds. You like it or not. At this point, Alysa skates much better than Mariah. Alysa jumps and lands better than Mariah. Alysa has better spin at Mariah. Alysa skates faster than Mariah. Alysa has better ice coverage that Mariah. Mariah bell career is over.
I don't get what Jonathan means in "these three girls have Lutzes". Rika has the best Lutz in Japan. Both Rino and Kaori have Flutzes and Satoko's Lutz edge is not very deep.
kihira had landed two triple lutzez in international competitions in the last 3 years. you need to have some courage to call "the best" something that is non existent. of course kihira claims that her lack of lutz jump is some temporary problem, because of "injury" (must be some truly horrific injury that is lasting for 3 years), but honestly i can't imagine what injury can prevent a skater to do a 3Lz, but not a 3F. both jump have the same take off leg. the truth is that a lutz has always been problematic for kihira, she had very low success rate with this jump since her first junior season. i always laugh at stupidity of casual fans who are claiming that kihira has the most amazing 3Lz technique, the same thing is kolyada 4Lz. yeah, their technique is so amazing that they have abysmal success rate with those jumps, to the point that they can't land those jumps at all.
@@alexanderbakulin8836 Nonsense. Kihira has never fallen from Lutz and she has an exquisite inside edge on the jump. Blablabla. She just took out it from the programme due to injuries.
@@iosebdzamukashvili5360 " Kihira has never fallen from Lutz" it's a blatant lie. she had fallen from 3Lz many times in juniors, and even more of her 3Lz attempts had underrotations marks in the protocols (both in juniors and seniors). her consistency problems in juniors were greatly related to 3Lz. she had limited lutz attempts since juniors, and became much more consistent in seniors. "She just took out it from the programme due to injuries." what exactly injury is preventing her from jumping a 3Lz, but not a 3F. can you name the exact bone or muscle, that is important for one jump, but insignificant for the other?
@@iosebdzamukashvili5360 by "cleanest" you mean that it's underrotated most of the time? i'm not even mentioning that kihira's 3Lz is pathetically tiny (38 cm high on average). sure it's comparable with tuktamysheva or higuchi 60+cm high 3Lz
Completely off topic but guys, do you know what Shoma and the Champery team are up to these days? I've seen some images of a rehearsal in Champery, and some new images of Shoma that don't seen to be related to the Prince show...
Firstly, I love your show ! Secondly, I have some thoughts on Alyssa’s triple axel and other triple axels that look similar to her’s. From what I see, and have watched Alyssa’s in slow mo, I don’t think (IMO) that it is accurate to say it is cheated. Is it spinny looking? Is it slow? Does it need more height? Yes, to all of the above. BUT, she gets the job done. This is what I think the point of the GOE is. Yes, a beautiful triple axel, like Kostornaya’s deserves more GOE, but I don’t think it is fair to say Alysaa’s is incomplete. I think we must remember, that not everyone has the same amount of jumping ability. The fact that Alyssa can get the jump complete, albeit with limited height etc., has got to count for something. Disclaimer: I am talking about when Alyssa lands the triple axel.
According to the Skating Forum (goldenskate, fsuniverse...etc), people listen to This and That on radio every week. They report that Dave talked lots of "racist" stuff (related to Alysa) in the past. From this youtube video, you can tell. DAVE still HATES ALYSA and DAVE LOVES MARIAH. No matter how good Alysa is, DAVE won't like it. No matter how bad Mariah skates, DAVE still LOVES IT! Dave doesn't like Alysa for some reason. Clearly, Dave doesn't like Asian girl skater. Dave only loves WHITE girl skater (Mariah, Gracie). It is clearly at this point, both Alysa and Karen Chen are skating WAY WAY WAY much better than Mariah and Gracie. However, Dave still thinks that Mariah and Gracie are the best. Skills don't matter to Dave. Skin color matters the most (to Dave and this garbage racist channel).
@Ele I agree with you in that I don’t think Dave is a fan of Alyssa’s skating; however, I do not agree with you when you accuse Dave of being a racist. I simply don’t think he likes her skating - and he is allowed to have that opinion.
Where Mariah is ... She should go back to Hallelujah for the free. But I disagree about the short, I'd love to see her do something uplifting and classical. Even EVEN if that means Butterfly Lovers for the SP. Although I'd love to see her do Beethoven's Sixth Pastorale 1st movement for the SP. It's bright, it's cheerful and her free dress would work with that music.
It's not only about the music. It's also about skating skills. I notice that Mariah skating skill is REGRESSING. Slower skating speed, slower spin, cannot land the jump. Perhaps it's due to her age. Even Mariah is going back to the her old FREE hallelujah program, I highly doubt that she can deliver the same performance.
I love that Jimmy Ma did well. But, I still think that Nathan, Vincent , and Jason will make the Olympic team next year. Also, maybe Alissa will be on the Olympic team next year. Amber might not make it.
USFS can't pass over other skaters that are pushing themselves and doing way better than Mariah, more specifically Audrey Shin and Paige Rydberg. Whoever is pushing themselves should go, and not Mariah because "she IS Mariah Bell". Her body of work is not relevant to this timeline and is outdated. This should also be a warning to Amber. Alysa kept doing her work against all the crap that Dave has given her (sorry I like this channel but it is true, it is pretty obvious that Dave has a vendetta against Mr. Liu, her father, and to her). Again whoever delivers should go, and if that is Alysa/Bradie/Karen, then great. If Mariah and Amber push themselves starting from now, great, then it should be Alysa/Amber/Mariah, but so far that combination looks unlikely.
DAVE hates Alysa, it's very obvious. This channel is crap. Dave cannot express his opinion professionally. Dave has so much hatred towards a teenage girl which makes me feel so sick.
You know, I was pleasantly surprised as to how well prepared athletes were for the recent summer Olympics, so perhaps, for winter we can expect the same. Like so much talk about injuries and post Covid effects, still the games showed that most athletes were were well prepared. So overall, I am looking very much forward to the games next year)).
So at Sambo rink there are lots of yappy aggressive little things jumping around and looking for attention! And they also have their pet dogs with them lol
@Марина Россия3 it's an expression used for someone who loses their hair when someone disappoints them. Like, "she was so pissed at XYZ that she lost her wig." I love her though.
It's definitely their best element, but the lift scores must have been very close though. Most of the top pairs are doing very similar lifts with no major differences and end up with the same base values and very similar GOE.
@@simplyskye3773 It was pretty close, yeah. (The protocols are posted, in case you want to look). But the highest-scoring lift overall was their final lift in the free, which is just stunning. 10+ points. I disagree that there isn’t much of a difference across the top teams. You know beautiful positions and smooth lift footwork when you see it, and some teams are only ok. Anyway, I just found it interesting.
I’m really enjoying the non-lyrical music in these programs. I hope this is a trend. I’m puzzled on how you guys watch these competitions. I cannot find any of the Japanese competition. Jimmy Ma skating draws you in-I hope he can become consistent.. he’d be one of the top skaters. I would actually prefer Kosternai only doing triples vs the other 3.
Alysa has a long way to go if she ever wants to be one of the top ladies in the world but I have to say considering where she was at a year ago, it’s amazing how much she has improved from that. So anything is possible I guess. I also have to give her team credit for music selection. She has much better music this year than a lot of others who have competed so far. That alone makes her stand out from Mariah and Amber because neither one of them was even close to nailing it in that category.
He was there but he did so poorly in the Short Program at Worlds that he didn't qualify for the free skate. This is the reason the 3rd US spot for the Olympics needs to be defended at Nebelhorn, so far they only have 2 spots secured.
Guys! You said you were going to talk about Cup of China getting cancelled and you totally forgot about it. Need another episode talking about that, the JGP situation, Canada and France restrictions, and half the Russian skaters and coaches not having visas for Skate America yet.

I imagine Eteri was in Michigan visiting her daughter en route to Cranberry. Tarasova & Morozov's solo jumps are too far apart from each other but they did have a great skate.
I find their entrance to the triple toe awkward (similar to radford and James)
Dave: She’s still Mariah Bell!
Jonathan: 😑
Lmao
Nice touch with the cranberry drink, Jonathan.
That picture with Eteri was epic:)
❤️❤️
I absolutely love that jimmy ma is doing an anime piece. Gets more people interested in the sport
I really hope Mariah goes back to her celine dion short from 20118/19! She performed it with such joy (and it was a great costume)
I see improvement in Alyssa. I also admire her ability to handle the last 2 years of difficulty (body changes) with grace.
This season will be something else. Getting my popcorn ready
Yeah, pretty much every drama these last 4 years has been leading to this specific season😄
FYI - there are a few Cranberry Cup videos taken by someone in the audience, and they're decent. They were not downloaded from that horrible video feed. The channel is Alexa On Ice.
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your perspective from being there in person. The live stream was frustrating.
Notice Kostornaia isn't posting any triple axel attempts. I'm guessing she hasn't regained it.
Or maybe she's gonna pull off the whole "BAM BITCH, I CAN TRIXLE" stunt for her 1st GP assignment like she did in 2019 😄 who knows...
I think a lot of the women skaters who had 3As (Rika, You Young, Wakaba Higuchi) are having trouble with the 3A. Many skaters have trouble with it, as it is the most difficult triple, or outright most difficult jump element.
Last time she recovered her 3A, it literally came out of nowhere.
She already had it back at eteri show back in what March or April? She jumped it there as far as I know, so she landed it already this year, the question is if she got it stable again
@@ileana823100 Yeah, I saw that attempt and it looked under rotated (in slow motion) and I haven’t seen it since that one try.
I am here to know the backstory of that Eteri picture! 😂
And we need to send Kostornaia to the Olympics
@Skate Lover oh honey, let me tell you a secret: we are creating an underground society whose only goal is to make sure Kostornaia goes to the Olympics.
We are willing to bribe, intimidate or do whatever it takes to get her there.
@@lynnesau2058 I’m in!!!! Let’s get this going full steam! Haha.
They are both beautiful. I hope they have a successful season and enjoy themselves . Tarasova is stunning though.
@@christinethorp3684 I this Amber’s short program has some beautiful aspects to it, but I’d prefer something different for the Olympic year.
Honestly nothing about Amber's skating is all that great. She emotive, but only uses that on weepy ballads and is packaged poorly as well. I think it's between Karen and Mariah for the third spot. Mariah seriously needs to put in some work and maybe think of going back to her old programs.
@@rop888 if it’s between Mariah and Karen then it’s Karen hands down. She was 4th Worlds and Mariah didn’t even make the team.

We need a pyramid for the Japanese, Russian and American women this season!!
We will work on this!
Tarasova/Mozorav are to damn old to have a silly costume change, I thought we left that in 19/20 season 🤚🏼😭
Dave...so BRAZEN to lay out that comment. mad respect. but yes.
ETERI IF YOU'RE READING THIS WE WANT ALENA!
I respectfully disagree. Lost in translation.
I think her skating skills are good
If she was American she would have scored higher. But this bias happens in every country sadly.
I really think alysa is making the olympics I see the team being bradie Karen and alysa
Same. Obviously we haven't seen Karen and Bradie compete this season, but both Amber and Mariah had unfortunate outings with questionable material, while Alysa really delivered here.
The season is long, it’s still very early, plus that 3rd spot isn’t earned yet.

I agree I kind of see Sui and Han more likely getting bronze than gold, they’re amazing but we keep forgetting they’ve been competing on the GP since 2010. That’s a lot of skating under their belt. I hope the stars align but I could see the Russians sweeping in Beijing.
Don’t give up on them! It took Shen/Zhao four Olympics to get that gold.
@Davin I respectfully disagree about anything being "fixed" for Sui and Han at Beijing 2022. However, yes, as long as they skate clean with new programs and be as great as they are, they'll win without any help from the home country or judges.
i still believe that Sui Han will win Olympics....... Last season wasn't good for them due to covid break.
What did Eteri say back to dave? I can’t hear it! Dying to know 😝
Agree with Dave about Alysa. She did well here, no doubt about it, and the improvement is clear to everyone. But she's still a junior-looking skater at this point.

Never clicked so fast in my LIFE
I don't get what Jonathan means in "these three girls have Lutzes".
@@alexanderbakulin8836 Whatever you say she has the cleanest and most correct Lutz in ladies along with Liza.

@Ele
I agree with you in that I don’t think Dave is a fan of Alyssa’s skating; however, I do not agree with you when you accuse Dave of being a racist.
Where can I find the results for the Cranberry Cup? I can't find them

Was Eteri's wig as magical as I have always dreamed it to be?
@Марина Россия3 it's an expression used for someone who loses their hair when someone disappoints them. Like, "she was so pissed at XYZ that she lost her wig." I love her though.
Fun fact, Jessica and Brian actually won the lifts in the free.
I love their skating! So glad they went back to prior FP.
Amber Glenn did not deserve -5 on her triple axel. Yes it was under-rotated, but she stayed on her feet. I think -3 or maybe -4.
It must have been hard for Mariah if her coach was away in Tokyo for 2 and a half weeks just before this.
YES. I’m not going to bed early anymore!
Wait how come Vincent gets to go to nebelhorn? Wasn’t he at worlds?
He was there but he did so poorly in the Short Program at Worlds that he didn't qualify for the free skate. This is the reason the 3rd US spot for the Olympics needs to be defended at Nebelhorn, so far they only have 2 spots secured.
