  • Can you write a song using only one chord? And I don't just mean some ambient vamp where the whole things is about mood and sounds, no, I mean an actual song, with different parts and changing dynamics.
Well.. let's find out. Because this is exactly what I tried to do in this video.

Sly & The Family Stones - Everyday People is only one chord.
Frankie Goes to Hollywood - Relax, Two Tribes and Welcome To the Pleasuredome are all just E.

I'll have to listen to those! Thank you!

@@heitstrengningmusic The Frankie tunes actually might cheat a little and have either bridges or intros that veer off E, but it's amazing what they can do with 90% of the song in one chord. And they turned them into huge hits.

This is a great technique to get the compositional ball rolling. Sometimes it can be daunting to commit to a chord progression and then write a melody on top of that. I like the one note / pedal point approach because if you can write a melody that works on top of that you can usually use it on top of any chord progression. Plus the one note / pedal point sections make things easy for those bass players in the band haha.

Very true, and that's a good point!
I wonder if they'll start getting fancy and do little climbs and fills in between and mess with the point of the pedal note. I probably would haha :)
