Gosh, your color choices are always so beautifully muted, and somehow vibrant at the same time. It's like when you see a cardinal on a cold Winter day.
I don't know, I feel like videos where you fail would actually be encouraging. Like especially for those of us who are still learning and may not have a grasp on watercolour completely and can see that even someone like you still make mistakes and have painting fails. I feel like if you discuss what you wished you had done instead to make it better, I think a video like that would do well.
Those green and gold blackwing pencils are so nice to work with and just so pretty! Thank you for sharing both stages of this piece. I think it's important that artists now remove themselves from the idea of perfect social-media worthy sketchbooks and definitely do more learning and experimenting while still practicing. Not everything needs to be perfect or even finished -- this sort of practice allows for honing creativity a little bit for the next big project. Like you said, every mistake can be something applicable to the next part of your journey. Anyway -- I do like both ways this piece turned out. My very favorite part is the teal eye on the right side there. That flat deep color over the purple/red really draws...the eye... LOL. You know what I mean. (: Anyway, great work! Can't wait to see what's next.
the final piece after you changed it reminded me of those pieces that used to be viral on instagram where the artists used only red for one piece and overlapped another piece using only blue to make a combined painting where if you used those classic red-blue 3D glasses you could see the individual pieces come to life and its such a strong concept, it would be so cool if you tried this concept in that way - I love how this piece turned out and the skeleton idea is like the perfect introduction into October and Halloween
You haven't ruined the painting at all or overworked it,but created someting really evocative and haunting,I love the idea of the skin becoming translucent so the skull can be seen below it,and you created the sense of luminosity and mystery that the skin would have, you chose the right colours to create the piece. It has the look of a ghost or a blurred reflection, but also a look o something dreamlike and a little anatomical.I like how the face emerges from the dark background but also merges back into it as well. Sometimes it's good to go beyound our own creative comfort zones, and to try to resolve an idea we had,by going back to a piece,I don't think this painting was a mistake, but more a transitional piece, painitings like this are the ones that give us more things to take forward into the next painting we do,I think it was quite significant you used your own andmade paints to create the piece, because thes paints react differently to ready made paints and I think these were the right choice of paints to use to paint this piece.I like the fact the face has some degree of abstraction too, which strangly makes it more human. Our sketchbooks are great places to try things,to use them as exploratory stepping stones in our creative journey, there is no pressure to create something really finished, but to just experiment and enjoy the process of play of seeing what happens as you work.I think the final piece does work and is a touch poetic too. sometimes it's good to take a creative risk and see where it takes you,and you did that with this piece and it does really work all the better for making that leap.(matt)
I was wondering when you'd appear again! You said you wanted to push it and you did. It looks great. I'm a healthcare worker and he reminds me of a few of my psychiatric patients who have been through hell, drugs, death, depression and back again. It's like he's alive, but coming out of the funk he was in, but not quite 100%. Love it!💗
As someone who also makes videos of my paintings, I really appreciate this conversation about ensuring that a sketchbook is a safe space for experimentation. So often when I film, I stick with what I feel comfortable with, but I won’t grow as an artist if I don’t take risks.
Usally what happens to me is, there are art pieces other artists made that they hate or dislike, but I enjoy that art piece. Its not to make fun if it, i just legitmily enjoy it. So when an artist deletes is, it makes me sad
Whenever I have an unsuccessful painting I always come back and see how far I can push it. I find that in that process of abandoning all expectation I end up with something I actually like.
i actually like the final piece better! those blue-green colors are so pretty, and i like how the teeth look melding into the lips. even those blooms around the eye look cool! thank you for making such wonderful videos
thank you for this video! I finally gathered the motivation to do some planning for Inktober, working out what I want to do exactly. It's always a joy to watch your videos
I have a question what”s the artist from whom you purchased the middle sticker? I was a fan of their art a longtime ago but unfortunately i forgot their name.. :„)
i loved how you explained the answering our own question, how we should just be brave and make the jump for it :') you're so inspiring and the painting turned out amazing! 🖤🖤
I love hearing your thought process. Thank you for sharing. Those videos where artists try something new, and maybe don't reach a nicely rounded conclusion in their piece, to me those are the most interesting.
Can I ask, is there a name, or reference term for the style of color layering that you use I could look in to to study a bit? I've never done portrait painting and I'd like to have a crack, but my stupid process brain needs to have some kind of framework to approach it with.
This is actually very beautiful and so realistic drawing! Love this beautiful sharing! And perfect drawing ✍️ skill super awesome 👏🏻 mind blowing drawing ✍️

That is such a perfect description of Arlee’s work!
The finished painting makes such a strong statement. I'm glad you "overworked it" and shared the process :)

I really like the process of making a thumbnail. It’s just such a helpful tool and helps you to stay loose.

It's always a joy to watch your videos
theres just something about your art that brings me so much joy
sometimes overworking and experimenting with a piece pays off 😀

Great video, I was wondering what pens/markers you were using at 2:12?
This was awesome. I like the risk you took!

I know Arlee has a skillshare class about the rainbow skin technique she uses, maybe you could look there?
Title says - ruined-
I'm thinking - masterpiece-
