I had a bullshitter friend like Jay when I was a kid. My favourite memory of him was one time he came into school and claimed he'd got drunk the night before. We asked him what he'd drank and he said he couldn't remember and tried to bullshit his way through this story. But we persisted with asking him what he'd had to get him drunk and eventually he panicked and said wine gums.

The pool table being in the school is only because they are in "Six Form", they are the oldest in the school and as you are not required to come back to school after Year 11, the Six Form common room (the room they are in) is usually a bit more of a chilled out area. Other kids in YR7-11 won't have access to this room. It's more to treat them more like adults now they have technically 'left school'.

4:34 In British schools the top two years (17 and 18 year olds) get what's called a 'common room', which is like a staff room for students. There's usually a shitload of posters on the wall, a kettle or coffee machine for beverages, a microwave for whatever crap you've brought in, a card table for the hustlers, and if there isn't a pool table then something has gone horribly wrong and somebody will quickly steal one from somewhere. A common room _must_ always have a pool table!
The reason is because the final two years at school are not 9-4 like the previous years were, the 17 and 18 year olds that have chosen to stay in school (you can legally leave school at 16 over here) have chosen subjects that they want to get higher grades in but they only have like 3 classes in a day - this means an average day might consist of 9-10 Art, 10-11 free, 11-12 lunch, 12-1 French, 1-2 free, 2-3 Art again. And so during the free time you could go home, go somewhere else, or sit in the common room playing poker for cash while talking shit about teachers.

The genius about this show is that every character you can attribute them and how they act to real kids and friends you knew at school. Especially Jay, the kid who'll say any bollocks to impress everyone, and even though he can seem disgusting on the face of it, he has a heart of Gold (eg in this episode, telling the girl about Simon and saying he "had a cool car"- previous to all the hilarious bravado). The name "Inbetweeners" fits them and many kids perfectly too - not cool enough to be popular, but not uncool enough to be unpopular.
Interestingly, James Buckley who plays Jay has a pretty popular Twitch channel (& YT) called "Completed It Mate", which is a name & meme derived from a quote of his in a later Season when he declares he's completed a game (Football Manager) that can't be completed - If time and your computer allowed it could literally last forever lol.

Kids doing their Advanced Level qualifications (which universities use to determine whom to admit) are typically 16-18. This group is called 6th Form (6th and 7th year of high school), and it is quite common for them to have a “common room” to share. They have a number of free lessons to study in their own time, and so they often use this room. It’s common for them to have pool tables, and vending machines. It’s supposed to be part of preparing them for college.

They had gaming of various genres as in computer gaming and/or conventional gaming like pool, ping pong, air hockey, etc. My experience of such places was over circa 95/96. Where common rooms were like being in a pub minus alcohol or direct access to drinks or snacks. Everyones common room might have been different, as in access to vending machines in situ. At high school I went to back in late 80s , had a" Break Room"
Which was like ,size of two classrooms ..
It was near to school entrance .. on lower floor to ,head master and teachers lounge. Which was above "Break Room".
It had a tick shop ,where you could buy sweets ,choc and drinks ..pop etc.
And it had a dj that'd play music .. plenty of seating areas ... cannot recall any games section..
There gain we used to take playing cards to school , or play toss the coin to wall .and whoever was closest ,won the lot .

In Scotland, we had a pool table at Primary School (5 years old to 12 years old) then High School, we had a pool table and computer games (12 to 18 year old) then college or Uni was just pubs and getting wasted mostly, then when I started working in an insurance firm (Aagon) There was a specific massive room for R&R (rest and recreation) had a pool table, Sky TV, xboxes and PlayStations, also the old arcade games like pacman... and on a Friday, we got Pizza and beer and where all sent home early... 30 odd years I've witnessed that kind of relaxation in a highly stressful environment... it helps with productivity a lot...

The inbetweeners was filmed in my area whilst I was in year 12-13 (alot of the extras actually went to my school 😂)
A particularly iconic episode in season 2 involving a bus stop was filmed right outside my school and the kids were year 7s.

The boys are in "sixth form" its a stage between attending legally required school and going to college/uni. in some situations like in this show the two are in the same "school grounds" but the sixth form students are usually given more adult things and freedom. normally a uniform isnt usually required. hence in episode 2 when the skip class the head says there isnt nothing he can do. except where Simon faked his mums phone call lol.

In the U.K. school is only compulsory to years 11 which is aged 16. Most schools have a year 12 and 13 (sometimes called 6th form) which is where lots of students stay on to do their A Levels. You are generally treated a lot more like young adults during these two years and it is not uncommon for year 12’s +13’s to have their own Common Room with pool table etc.

  • @jonathanhill9748

It's a common thing for kids this age (16-18) to have permanent access to a common room where there's often food and drinks available, chairs and sofas and tables to sit at, and maybe a pool or babmington table. This is because they have lots of free periods where they can study or hang out with friends. Younger kids don't get free periods which is why they only need a dining room.

I spent all night watching "Stir Crazy" for the 1000th time in the room.
The night of the talent show, I got up on the piano and did my thing.

4:49 I'm not sure what it's like in the states, but here when you're in 6th form like these guys (last years of school), you'll generally chose 3 subjects to study and will have a lot more downtime between lessons when you're meant to 'study' on your own.
Because of that, there is usually a common room (I think Americans call them "Rec Rooms"?) where you're basically just meant to socialise at school between lessons - I think they have them so that kids don't socialise outside of school during the school day

Hey KB, great to watch you laugh, pause restart the show due to how funny it is. I have watched this show again and again for years, it still makes me laugh every time.
Thing is when set at school the cast start to look to old for their parts. But.... both films are also good too, so might get more in time to come.
Not sure if you have checked out or been informed of a show set in Glasgow, Scotland called "Still Game"?
Most of the main cast of the show play their parts of characters older in age than they really are ie, make up and clothing to look the part.
Was first on TV as part of a sketch show only on for a few minutes, a show called "Chewing the fat" also a funny show of its seasons shown on TV. "Still Game" went on to 8 seasons of its own show, probably every person in Scotland can relate to a character that reminds them of someone of their own family or friends.
Well i do think its up the top of my list with "Inbetweeners" and hope if not already you can check it out, and upload another new series you can enjoy!
