Dear Samuel, being a Contralto myself thank you for putting out the most accurate video for this rare, misunderstood and ridiculously under represented voice type.
The chest voice of the contralto voice actually begins at D3. I speak and sing this note easily. I can coordinate it into fabulous low runs. They are clear, extremely dark, and resonant. In comparison the tenor chest voice begins at C3, the low Mezzo E3. Honestly there is an overlap. And you can hear that in a true Contralto voice, part Tenor, part (Mezzo) Soprano.
This unique voice stands out from other women because it works in a similar fashion to a man's voice. A voice that is dominated by heavy chest mechanism. up to the fourth octave. They have an unusually long, extended chest register, sounding very rich and deep for far longer than other females voice types. Their voices are prodigiously powerful, rich, thick, cavernous, chesty in the fourth octave... on par with men. I highly recommend listening to a Toni Braxton vocal range video and pay attention to her fourth octave belts, A4 and above to about D5. Phenomenal. In the fourth issue they are true money notes on any Contralto. you are correct that Contraltos are not high belters. I do not have a long mixed register like higher voiced women do. Women must be their mix in order to belt. my true middle register is only a handful of notes located in the fourth octave. Around F5 or so my voice is already in pure high register. Past A5 things start to feel uncomfortably high. My true head voice resembles male falsetto. It sounds disparately bright, piercing, pure, crystalline, like strikes of lightning compared to my heavy, dark chest register. A rather Androgynous trait. To hear this please check out singer Lyves who really exploits this in her voice.
As for myself, l have experimented with my low belts (fourth octave) and they are shockingly androgynous. The dark smoky character and the weight carries into my mixed register. if l limit my voice to a certain range l really do sound Tenor like. I can successfully belt a G4 in pure chest and sound convincingly male. I know I'm not the only one. The G4 note on a contralto is very pronounced: unusually thick, strong and dark compared to other females, androgynous even. Only the Contralto can safely delay using head voice this high.
High tenor songs are where my voice really shines. I sing many of the same keys men do. Note that the standard passagio for the Contralto is F4, similar to the Tenor voice. Unlike the male voice though where it starts to get weak and falsetto-y, our voices gain strength, remaining thick and strong for a couple notes more (our true mixed register) before engaging our high registers. you can hear this phenomenon a lot when contraltos duet with males. I was struck by it when Cher sings l Got You Babe with Sonny or when Toni B duets with Babyface.
I agree that most contraltos don't sound exactly like men. On the whole they sound like women, abeit witha heavier, darker, rich, smoky tone. Even if they don't sound particularly androgynous. In their mixed register they often are. tenor like from the weight, strength and colour (like sunsets, honey, Amber, chocolate, blue ink, dark plum). It's really fascinating.
What l love about the Contralto voice that their overall dark, heavy timbre is wonderfully mournful, MELANCHOLIC, haunting, lugubrious, forlorn. Since they sing mostly in chest tones, their voices are deeply moving and conversational. Everything they literally carries so much more gravity and weight. Very compelling to listen to! That's how they make their singing careers, singing ballads and torchy songs about heartache and pain. (You know who they are).
Anita Baker is possibly a coloratura Contralto whose light voice easily moves into the upper regions, almost as high as Soprano while maintaining the classic, dark, smoky Contralto timbre. Another example might be Sade, her voice is ever warm, rich, smoky (hazy) and feminine, but it is not oppressively heavy, dark or powerful. it seems rather small.
Most contraltos are lyrics. Cher, Toni Braxton, Lauryn Hill, Grace Jones, Timi Yuro, Liza Minnelli, Judy Garland, Alison Moyet, Amy Winehouse, Diana Krall, Carly Simon, Mavis Staples, Sarah Vaughan. And many more. I honestly do not they think are as rare as people make them out to be. They are talked about like they're unicorns or something. Yes they are rare but not that rare. I really feel that male bass voices are far more rare than the Contralto voice.

Rhys Middleton What credentials have you got, Mr. Middleton? Let's settle this once and for all. Dileesa isn't the authority on anything.
Toni Braxton and Anita Baker have said publicly they are contraltos. They make a PROFESSIONAL living singing. You don't think they don't know what their true voice types are?

    • @arxsyn
      @arxsyn 4 роки тому +4

Rhys Middleton Let me settle this once and for all. I am a real contralto. I know l don't sound like other women and l have to look to other contraltos and male singers for clues in order to operate my unique instrument.
Keep in mind, the differences between each female voice type is rather small. Trained contemporary female singers can sing a very similar range and there's lots of overlap in each category so it be be very tricky to identify a woman's true voice voice type. The best way to do that is identifying the singer's PASSAGIO. For example a clue that a singer is a Soprano is that her tone brightens very quickly. A Soprano singing her typical lowest note of G3 and above only has five chest notes. A true contralto, typical lowest chest note D3 and above has nearly double that. Her tone remains grounded, rich and dark for a very, very long time, their incredibly high passagio being F4, G4, even Ab4 (Dramatic Contralto, ie Tracy Chapman).
For last time, NOT ALL CONTRALTOS SOUND ALIKE. THERE ARE MANY SUB CATEGORIES. THEY DO NOT NECESSARILY SOUND ANDROGYNOUS. IT IS INTELLECTUALLY LAZY TO THINK THAT. It's easy to take mental shortcuts, right?
Toni and Anita sing PROFESSIONALLY for a LIVING. They have publicly stated they are indeed contraltos. You don't think they know what their voice types are??? Between the two of these ladies they have won *15* Grammy Awards. How many have you got? I'd love to know. GET A GRIP, PLEASE!
      BTW
Toni Braxton is an incredibly talented, skilled singer, many times better than Sade. She doesn't have to sound chesty and dark all the time. She can mix earlier to sound Mezzo-soprano like (lighter, brighter) or she can go chest dominant sound (oppressive, heavy, dark). Also, Toni Braxton does indeed sound androgynous. More so than Sade. Look up singer FAMOUS, a tenor, imitating her! A typical Contralto basically sounds like a low voices female, often with a weight to it on par with the Tenor voice. The vocal colours are similar too. Some are so dark, almost baritonal. They have unique dark, smoky timbre that carries into their mixed register.
Women's voices darken and mature over time. I have heard girly, youthful Contraltos (my old self), mezzo Soprano's, and Sopranos. Not all Sopranos are girly. Jesse Ware is one, but doesn't sound girly at all! doesn't make her a Contralto though

Rhys Middleton Everybody has a unique singing style. Don't think just Ana Carolina doesn't, doesn't mean she can't. Ever thought of that? In the mixed register, singers have option. I told you already. They can: go chest dominant, balanced, or pure high register. In other words it is possible to sing a note 3 different ways! SINGING IS PERFORMANCE ART. No contralto (or singer for that matter) sings alike nor sounds alike.

I've received vocal lessons for 8 years and had to quit right before my Bachelor's degree exams in Indian Classical music. I mostl didn't like singing because i thought that my voice range sucks. My voice quality was not deemed ideal for classical music and I was told to stick to semi- classical and new age Bollywood singing. And my voice doesn't even fit most of the Bollywood music because most of the female have very high pitch voice so I was mostly killing my vocal chords to sing. Until recently when I discovered that I'm probably a contralto with vocal range of E2 to G5, most comfortable in the C3 range. I sound decent while singing jazz and songs with more style than technique. This voice classification was never really taught to me cuz our Indian Classical music is based only on melody and not on harmony. There are no altos, tenors, superanos etc. That means that there is only one singer in a performance. No lead singer, main singer and backups etc, no harmonies. This is extremely beneficial when the singer wants to showcase his/ her vocal range and advanced singing technique and any impromptu variations they bring to the table to make the performance stand out. All my life I thought I just sucked, but now I know I'm probably a contralto. So I'll look for music that would suit my voice range. :) Thankyou.

I've been dealing with self esteemed issues for years. At the age of 8 I learned I had an unusually low voice for a girl. When I was older I somehow stumbled upon "voice types" and doing further research I learned that I am a dramatic contralto. I've had love-hate relationships with musical theatres and Disney. All the pretty protagonists are sopranos and all the contraltos are mothers, maids, hags and villains (or overly sexual). As someone commonly called "naive" and a "puppy dog" (sometimes complimentary sometimes telling me to grow up a bit more) I find it really hard to find songs that I can "click" to. I often find myself either singing along with guys or alternating the notes in songs to actually sound good.
As of late I've found that I can sing a lower version of "Part of Your World" from Little Mermaid and Cassandra's song from Rapunzel's Tangled Adventures since I've started trying to practice my range (though there's some difficulties as I have a hearing impairment that makes it difficult for me to hear particular notes).

Your ability to alternate notes in songs implies you have a good ear to tailor existing melodies and harmonies to your tessitura. I would suggest continuing to tailor songs to your tessitura and refining your ear to help you harmonize any song you desire to sing with ease. I did this often as a youth for fun and to experiment with different possibilities of a song. Jogging or any form of cardio helped me expand my range. I used to jog and sing songs to assist with breath control and stamina. Best of luck to you!

Feeling better today :) It’s interesting to note that classically female voices have a “full” chest register that is longer as you go down in voice type - and thus it becomes slightly higher in tapering off due to power. However, the middle register shrinks significantly for a contralto: around A4 to D5, which is the top area of the range you mentioned. It’s common that a contralto who has developed all registers will have a soprano-like middle register into head voice and a booming chest register, because unlike the mezzo the head & chest are not coordinated in tandem and unlike the soprano itself, the voice as a whole is thicker but the head voice is not stronger than the chest voice.

I remember in middle school my teacher assigned colors of the wind to the alto section and we had to sing individually in front of everyone. Everyone belted their way through it while I basically stayed in falsetto for most of it still failing to hit most of the high notes. Then got told I wasn't trying hard enough bc of that. But then when there was really low notes I was the main one able to hit those, so I guess it balanced out.

That is when I lost track of my inner ear and my natural sound and my whole life has been torture trying to sing, not only because most songs we hear are not in my natural range, but also my voice was really suppressed and confused. 🥲 Having your authentic sound is an important part of knowing who you are and what your self-expression is. When I was 7, I was sent to a (not very nice) voice coach because my voice almost completely broke. And I never got my voice back until now. I am 37 now and I am now uncovering my natural voice, which I am realizing is definitely a contralto voice. Parents, please NEVER EVER judge your child and just accept and love them the way they come. You can do a lot of damage if you do not want to learn to understand your child for their unique selves and their pure intentions. What I've found is that my deeper voice really fits my personality. I am calm and non-judgmental. When I relax, my voice has a bluesy character. This is what makes me great at helping others to relax too and be who they really are, no matter what their natural self is like. Authenticity matters! And acceptance is mega important in that!!!

💯. I don’t know why he’s emphasizing how rare contraltos are. Granted, there’s less of us than sopranos but we’re not 🦄. It’s not a super low %. I moved around a lot growing up, singing in school & church choirs & there were plenty of us wherever I lived in U.S. There are also plenty of famous singers who sing in that range. Like you said, R&B’s the perfect example. Ok I’m done now 😂.

you say contraltos dont sound like men but some can😭😭 my lowest note is F2 and my lowest without sounding like I'm trying hard to sing low is A2. it sounds really masculine and manly when I go that deep, but when I go first half of third octave it sounds androgynous not male or female. ppl always say contralto doesnt sound male but what if you're a biological female and it does? I'm only 22 and I'm a smoker to be fair but even when I was 7 my G3s were super deep😭😭 hope it's okay for women to sound like men cuz I surely do

Most of the people on the list are/were contraltos. However, Karen Carpenter and Lana Del Rey were actually mezzo-sopranos commonly misidentified as contraltos due to richness in the lower register. Timbre supports the theory. When I was three years old, my father told me that Karen Carpenter was “an alto”, but later on when I researched what an alto was, I got four different ideas. The first idea that passed through my mind was that alto is between contralto and mezzo-soprano. The second idea was that alto was short for contralto. The third idea was that alto can be a choral part that encompasses contralto and mezzo-soprano voice types. The fourth idea based on what I read about the alto voice was that it was “one rung higher than a tenor” and “the equivalent of a male countertenor”. Which three of the four ideas are misconceptions?

I'm come from a very musical family (everyone played at least one type of instrument and we would sing pretty much every day). I've always had a relatively deep voice and preferred singing harmony ever since I was in grade school. My parents had a very eclectic collection of vinyl records that included popular music as well as opera and soundtracks to musicals. We listened to these records all the time and would sing along. I always gravitated toward singing the males parts because those songs were closer to my vocal range than the songs sung by women. My dad had a relatively high vocal range so we would entertain friends and neighbors by singing together and switching up the genders (eg,: "Ten Minutes Ago" from Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, replete with hammy vibrato and belting) and everyone got a kick out of it. I never heard of the term contralto until just today. Thanks for this informative video!

a F3 for me it's like nothing for me, & B4 for me sounds like it's a D5 for mezzos, & is it just me or a lot of contraltos has a kind of "raspy/breathy" head voice? Cause i do, and it gives the impression of a "crack/breaky" voice, i'm so envy for those mezzo & soprano whose its head voice it's clean as water. And even though i'm the lighest cotralto i still have those qualities i've said.
    My vocal range :
Lowest note: G#2 (which it's my limit and fry)
    Actual audible low note: B2
    Highest belt: B4
    Mix: C5-G5
Whistle:E6 *believe me for me a E6 it's a whistle and I get mad because for Ariana it's a high head voice note & for me it's whistle but it's cool*
Where my range shines the most or where i like to sing also to preserve my voice C3-B4. I can do more but my i don't use my whole range bc I'm not obliged to sing uncomfy & dying, in my cause as a light contralto non androginous voice i could easily pretend i'm a mezzo but from my own choice i want to showcase the best of me & not sing high pretending i'm comfy, i don't use 1% of my range because i can reserve it for other moments & make people "wow i didn't know you could do this & that", trust me this is the best way to grow as an a vocalist, use some of your "secret powers" so you'll leave people shook.
As a coloratura contralto, still i feel down because my tone it's not commercially sucessful on radio, but i'm learning to accept & love my voice i hope it will change...it's hard but i will

Hi! I don’t know for sure if I’m a mezzo soprano or a contralto ;;. My low note is E3/F3 and my voice doesn’t really feel a switch in the 4th octave.... (this is me judging it how I sing naturally bc I used to try to make myself sound more girly -my voice is feminine but it’s very smoky and really warm) I think I used to sing in head voice and try to pull it down as far as possible, because when I sing that “feminine way” my voice starts struggling lower than D4 and can’t “belt” unless I want to hurt my throat. When I sing the way I speak, however, my voice goes down to F3 with ease and belts from B4-C5/D5 (I think I’ve been able to mix it for E5/F5)

    • @Nina-no8qj
      @Nina-no8qj 4 роки тому

Edit: not gonna lie I might be more of a dramatic mezzo soprano maybe? Like with that “heady” sorta sound (idk if I can call it head voice) my voice only goes higher than F#5 naturally when it’s within speech (usually baby talking bc everyone’s voice does that). When singing though my voice starts switching after D5 but then begins struggling after Eb5?? I always hear people talking about middle voice but I don’t even know what that’s supposed to feel like :/
No matter how I sing anything above E5 hurts if I try to sustain it, and even D5 can be iffy!?

I think it's interesting that you said there are no well-known contraltos today, when we have Beyoncé, Lorde and Miley Cyrus who definitely fit in to this category. Beyoncé is a case on her own, she can also sing super high, but if you listen to for example Hold Up, it's superduper low. Lorde - basically anyone of her songs. Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky, I bet most altos couldn't but most contraltos could sing the chorus. Both Lorde and Miley have in common the deep, smoky voice and when they belt it sounds incredibly powerful.

Yeah, my range is about G3-A4 and when I joined choir in college, I originally sung the alto part but the higher half of their notes were pretty uncomfy for me and I felt very unconfident because of it. However, the next semester, due to a big lack of tenors and my lower range, my prof asked if I'd switch to tenor so I did and it was the best thing that couple happened. There a few notes on the lower end that I have trouble hitting (especially when a composer has the basses and tenors sing in unison) but for the most part I can sing everything, it's so nice 😩🙏 but yeah, I'd say my range is a big chunk of those tenor notes and like the lower half of the alto notes (without going into my falsetto anyways), so I think I'm a contralto? Not super sure tho

Hey Sam, very interesting video. You say a lot of correct but also some incorrect things in this video which I would like to point out:
    - The lower the voice the lower the average belting range. So you are right, belting in the higher 4th and lower 5th octave is indeed quite a high belt in a contralto voice and most of them probanly cannot belt much higher than C#5/D5/Eb5.
    - Most comfortably singing range is probably indeed in the 4th and higher 3rd octave (probably F3-F4). However, a real contralto usually has much lower usable notes than F3 on the bottom.
    - Voice-typing comes from classical music so one must understand that the classification applies to un-amplified singing that is intentionally very headvoice heavy from the middle of the 4th octave upwards. That is why F3 is usually marked as the lowest usable (unamplified!) bottom note and the F5 (some contralto pieces go up to Ab5 or even Bb5) refers to a headvoice note not a belted note: hence, it is higher than your estimated D5
    - Some contralto voices sound pretty androgenous and can have nearly or just as much impact on the bottom and middle than a male voice, but doesn't have to be. Only given is that contralto voices are usually very "heavy"/impactful compared to higher female voices

i belt EASILY around the notes you specifically said were easiest for contraltos

  • @axeltopaz5839

So...I was always told I was a first alto (which is basically the lower range for mezzo-soprano, where in a 4 part choral piece the 2nd sopranos would take a more samey note as what they were singing before, the 1st altos would be taking on a slightly lower note than they would have otherwise if it were a 3 part version of the same arrangement. They would likely just sing the same thing as the 4 parter soprano 2) but I always felt that I fell very short in the higher notes and excelled where the notes went deeper. So in my second year of choir in high school I was bumped up a choir level, and there was a lack of altos (though it wasn't really treated as a countralto and more of a "most of you are actually alto 1s but we need you to stretch your voices uncomfortably low, thanks") and though I didn't have a good grasp of reading music and still don't, I was able to rely on our teacher's notes and the girl next to me who had a true smokey countalto voice to mimic the notes as they were meant to be and often the two of us carried the most powerful voices in our parts. Often because we were singing more powerfully though not louder, we covered up the stained voices of the others who were put there simply because a black girls voice tends to have a rich sound even though the notes didn't actually suit them. And no one really considered me alto material because my voice is far brighter sounding than would be the perceived norm. And now I come to find that, due to the comfort level of my range (I can go lower into a low tenor but it sounds more like a very quiet rumble and higher into what most women are "supposed" to be able to sing though it sounds like I'm a dying alley cat) that I am a lyrical countralto comparative to the most commonly thought of voice for an alto dramtic coutralto which the girl who sang next to me possessed bless her beautifully rare soul. So...yeah...finding out that there are multiple classifications of a countralto really made me feel less insecure about the way my voice sounds being wrong for my range...yay!

In classical voice classifications (bass, baritone, tenor, contralto, mezzo, soprano) there is no such thing as an alto, that term comes from choral singing (bass, tenor, alto and soprano) which is only based on rough range and not texture, belting, etc. There are sub categories within contralto that differentiate tone and many other things. If you were a contralto you would probably be a lyrical or maybe a coloratura. But you could be a mezzo-soprano with a slightly lower range, it depends. What’s your range and where are you most comfortable?

a real contralto should be able to go much, much lower than F3. that's actually closer to the lowest note for many sopranos (and not even a particularly low one. plenty of dramatic sopranos have extensions down to D3, though this probably isn't super common). probably 80% of women can hit that note, so it doesn't make sense for the lowest female voice to bottom out there. imo, a trained contralto should have at least a C2 (some have all the way down to A2) and have huge resonance as low as E3. the high end is also too limited. at the very least, they should have an F5, with as high as Bb5 not being uncommon (just don't expect them to hang out up there!). if you replaced "range" with "tessitura", we would probably be closer to agreement, as that's more or less where most of them probably hang out.
a tendency in videos and articles about voice type is to take the range of a male singer and bring it up an octave or so to get the equivalent female range. by and large, this is a flawed approach, as women typically have significantly bigger ranges than men. a well-trained female voice should have, at minimum, 2.5 octaves of well produced, performable notes, with many achieving 3. meanwhile, many male singers have just over 2 octaves, and a range of 2.5 octaves for a man is exemplary.
you're definitely right about one thing though, contraltos are very, very rare. half of people who get trained as "contraltos" these days are actually....lower sopranos. most people are some type of tenor or soprano. true baritones and mezzos have fairly low voices compared to the general population, and basses and contraltos are on the extreme (like, 5% of people tops).
PS: I'm happy to provide examples if you like.

Sometimes in order to drag my chest high - I need to make the tone softer in volume to practice it. It tends to sound weak.

I am 15. My lowest note ever is D#2, lowest comfortable is D3, highest chest is G4 (further head voice begins), highest comfortable is A5, highest ever is G6. First time I was assuming that I am a mezzo, but then I realized that mezzos usually have saturated and powerful highs, and my highs are just like dying goat, though I am trained. Sooo, I think that I am contralto... But I am still not sure, because I have never met a vocal coach 🤷

okay so that works for me...but i also do whistle notes. which cut out on G#6. so does B2 or C3-G#6 work for a contralto? and if i am contralto does that mean im coloratura contralto. and i wanna sing pop music. im so confused.🤦‍♀

Pls tell me why I can sing (I have covers of), the songs of Annie Lennox, Brenda Russel, Dalida & Lara (and their French & Italian songs), Rihanna, Beyonce, Donna Summer, Diana Ross, Barbra, Maria Callas, Edith Piaf and Shreya Goshal and her Hindi song, Sunn Raha Hai Na Tu. I also posted a cover of The Fifth Element song (not the aria part but the diva dance). I don't know my voice range. I just love to sing any song and I would normally study and practice and see how I could shift my voice to high notes. I have no formal lesson but since I was young I love to emulate voices but was too shy to join a competition. Should I still get a voice lesson to know my voice range. Would love to hear fr you. Thank you very much.

I am constantly told, mostly by my sister, that even if I do have a deep voice for 16 y/o girl im mezzo soprano cause it's not "deep enough for contralto" but I'm the most comfortable singing songs originally sung by tenor voices

Pitch in men voice and women overlap pitch is not always voice characteristics of male and female it's Also timbre . Women can have deep voice and sound like a women and men can have high voice and still sound like a man. And there are some people who timbre is androgynous when they naturally sound in the middle

Can I suggest you take a look at a lovely Russian teenager called Diana Ankudinova, singing 'Human' and 'Wicked Game'. EVERY vocal coach and opera singers that have reacted to her performances praise her very highly. She is a contralto but I'd love you to hear her as she is amazingly unique and has 'something extra' that leaves reactors speechless. I'm certain you could explain how a 14 year old girl can reach such deep notes, she also yodels, sings in several different languages, plays piano, tap dances and is absolutely beautiful. I assume you are a vocal coach and are very knowledgable in that area. I've subbed in the hope you will take a look at Diana and give your opinion. Please consider this and thank you.

I have actually been asked to look at her before. Her voice was mesmerising. Its was exceptionally heavy. She used a very very full configuration and was very comfortable in her lower range. But she also had a nice time in a higher key slightly. But she sounded exceptional with her voice so full and so heavy.

@@sambradley8297 Thank you for that Samuel. I'm so glad you've seen her. It's like when your favourite song comes on the radio in your car, you open all the windows and max the volume to share with the world. I'm only a moderator in her fan club and I want to share her with the world. Thanks again xx
