    Tarikh Episode 622
In This Episode Nikhil talks about In 1958, as part of Mao Zedong's Great Leap Forward, the Chinese government launched the Great Sparrow Campaign, aiming to eradicate sparrows as pests that consumed grain seeds. The mass killing of hundreds of millions of sparrows disrupted the ecological balance, leading to an explosion in insect populations, particularly locusts. Without sparrows to control them, locusts ravaged crops intended for human consumption. By 1960, the consequences became catastrophic, resulting in a severe famine that claimed the lives of an estimated 15 to 45 million people. The famine, also known as the "Three Years of Difficult Period," was exacerbated by factors such as a drought, failed agricultural practices, and governmental negligence. Despite sufficient grain reserves in massive warehouses, the government failed to distribute food to those in need, contributing to widespread starvation. The tragedy was compounded by brutal government suppression, with reports of cannibalism and extreme violence. The official narrative in China downplays the causes and effects of the Great Famine, but voices like journalist Yang Jisheng, author of "Tombstone," seek to expose the truth, even in the face of censorship and denial.
