    I just love this! I have a Canon Ixus 800IS where the focus didn't work, just made a lot of noise. So I teared it apart, as you here, screw by screw. There was a small cogwheel with broken teeth which didn't grab the focus, and now I shall try to find it on ali express thanks to your video.

    Thanks Wally. Very helpful with the lens disassembly and assembly. The VR lens jammed itself when I dropped it disabling the VR and giving some serious vignetting. When disassembled, I just popped it back into place!

      Don't say such a thing in public! It may happen such screws are the ones keeping the stove from tapping into free energy so that it starts producing oil now instead of co consuming it. If that's the case "big oil" may already have sent a death squad to your house and your life isn't worth 2 cent any longer.

    Wow that is pretty intense inside. I bought a P900 with a broken viewfinder. It is totally black when you peer inside, and it doesn't even allow you to click on the AVF in the menu, so I am thinking it needs replacing. I was hoping I could get an idea how that comes a part and how it would be replaced. I don't want to buy a replacement part unless I am confident that I can fix it myself.

    Hi, when I remove the outer lens barrel as you show at 3:48, when it gets to the maximum zoom point it stops and won't rotate any further. It is as if the 3 little guides in the grooves have hit something. Is that something you have experienced? I have some debris stuck to the back of the front lens that I would like to remove but I just can't get it apart. Thanks.

    • @whereswa11y
      @whereswa11y  3 роки тому

      No, not exactly. It is a little tricky to get it all apart as you see in the video.
      At what timestamp in my disassembly are you getting to?

    • @flowh4888
      @flowh4888 3 роки тому

      @@whereswa11y At 3:48 you are holding the complete lens barrel in hour hands. You rotate the inner barrel towards you with your right hand and the zoom extends all the way out until the outer barrel in your left hand comes off completely. With my lens, it hits a hard stop at the point around where the maximum zoom would be and won't go any further. It seems like it was designed that way although I can't discount the possibility that something is damaged inside that prevents it from going all the way, although that seems unlikely.
      I thought perhaps I need to pop out the 3 little metal guides that sit in the grooves of the inner barrel but that would require prying the barrels apart a bit which I'm afraid could damage them.

      @@whereswa11y Thanks so much for doing this. It appears that if the rotating ring on the end is not in the correct place, the guide pins on the outer barrel will hit that ring when they get to the end of the guide channels. The solution would be to rotate that ring so that the slots line up with the channels but I can't see how it could be rotated while it is all in one piece. I will have another play with it. Thanks again.

    I have a p900 and it cant focus on anything once you zoom past about 1000mm. It seems that it is unable to approach infinity focus. It has suffered a knock so something is probably damaged. Would it likely be the lens motor that is the problem? What else could be the issue?

      @@whereswa11y Thanks a lot for responding mate. Firmware was v1.3. I just updated to 1.5 but no change (cant see anything in the update log about focus issues anyway). Just cant focus past the halfway mark on the zoom.
      Doesn't matter whether I focus manually or use autofocus but at least with AF itll focus the image briefly before settling on being out of focus again.
      I'm thinking about just replacing the whole lens because the front lens is cracked anyway. If I knew that the focus motor was likely the problem though I might just replace that instead of the whole thing.

      i have not and I might be a bit wary. The first time I did this on this P900 it was broken so I had not much to loose. And I did make one error that ripped out the FFC leads #BAD.

      I understand quite completely. I did a teardown of a Nikon d70 with no manual. It all went well as I am experienced in dis and reassembly of complex objects and know the “tricks” as do you regarding trays, photo for reference, etc. Even with all that, it was quite the nerve wracking experience. I hear a Canon 7d has a carefully mounted CCD that needs to be reinstalled with perfection if you ever want an in focus picture in the future. I’m also told that this requires a machine for this alignment... makes me nervous.

    Hello there WW. I'm looking for somebody to take some footage of a sunrise or sunset with an infrared camera, and it seems like you've got the gear.
    I've been discussing sunsets with a flat Earther, and he has agreed to a pair of testable hypotheses. What we need now is footage showing a sunrise or sunset with a solar filter, zoom, and in infrared. Would you be interested in filming something like that?

      @@Wolfie6020 This particular flat Earther wants to see this done in infrared. I think he was extremely impressed with JTolan's work and has become convinced that infrared makes some sort of difference in some way. Frankly, it could just be a dodge to make it harder to find the images since fewer people have an infrared camera.
      We'd be foolish to imagine it would actually change anyone's mind, but It can be interesting to see how they react when you deliver exactly the evidence they've requested. This particular flat Earther has uncharacteristically agreed in advance to what the evidence will mean depending upon what we get. I'm curious to see how he would react if we can simply show him the Sun unambiguously passing below the horizon with his requested infrared photography.
      Here's the full request the flat Earther (Daniel Thomas Spyglasko on Quora.com) agreed to:
      After looking over the available evidence, we have narrowed it down to a pair of competing hypotheses:
      a) The Sun remains very nearly the same diameter as it sets behind the horizon, but an overexposed image can make that difficult to see.
      b) The Sun shrinks away to a small circle as it approaches the horizon, and it can be difficult to see the separation between the horizon and the Sun without a zoom lens.
      I call this the “sinking” hypothesis and the “shrinking” hypothesis.
      In order to invalidate either hypothesis, we are seeking clear, telephoto videos or photos of the Sun rising or setting against the horizon. To eliminate the glare which can obscure the actual size of the Sun, the images would need to be taken with a solar filter and appropriate exposure settings, and to maximize the clarity of the horizon, we would like to see images taken with an infrared camera.
      We have agreed that any image showing the horizontal diameter of the Sun to be at least 10% smaller while setting than it is when overhead would successfully invalidate the sinking hypothesis a). Likewise, any image showing the Sun over 50% below the horizon would invalidate the shrinking hypothesis b).
      Naturally we’d prefer to see videos showing the Sun either unambiguously sinking below the horizon or unambiguously shrinking into the distance, but we have agreed that a single image as described is enough to invalidate either of those hypotheses.
      So what are we looking for?
      Images of the Sun rising or setting over a body of water.
      Filmed with a solar filter and appropriate exposure setting so that the disc of the Sun is clearly discernible with no glare.
      Filmed with a powerful optical zoom.
      Filmed in infrared.
      Some means to compare the horizontal diameter of the Sun to see how much it changes while rising or setting. (My simplest suggestion is to include an image or images of the Sun taken with the same zoom settings at different times of the same day for comparison.)
      Naturally, you would retain all rights to the images. We ask only for permission to share them online for the non-commercial purposes of this discussion.
