Interesting and thanks for the effort. Nice to still see new Reface DX content being made. Sound design in FM synthesis is something not everyone is going to be skilled at.

Is there some good workaround for getting a squarewave on a single operato on older FM synths which only included sine as option? Im using Dexed which is structured like a DX7 and the closest way i have is modulating 2 modulators in such a way they become a single square wave

Hi, thanks for watching! Older FM synths have at least one operator that can feed back into itself. You can use that one to create square waves. Otherwise, you'll have to "waste" one operator for that.

Could you please make pulse wave sound with this keyboard

You can create a square / pulse wave by changing the feedback. You can't modulate the pulse width by normal means, but as this is an FM synth, try applying a static modulator with a pitch envelope to that square wave.

Honestly, your videos on the Reface DX are some of the best I have seen....most of the other videos just showcase the presets that I have now listened to a thousand times already on UA-cam 😅
You seem to be very well-versed in the synthesizer department & I have a question that I've been seeking an answer to for weeks, yet have found absolutely nothing. Floyd, I am a complete beginner to synthesizers and their programming (I am a software programmer otherwise! haha) - I want to know if you can actually get analogue sounds out of an FM Synthesizer, that is my question. I have seen literally every single video on UA-cam on the Reface DX and all I've heard is the same bells, chimes & melodious sounds.....and I keep hearing that FM synthesis is very deep etc, I really want to know if you can create those THICK sounds that you generally create with an analogue synthesizer (take the song "Jump" by Van Halen, the sounds right at the beginning of the keyboard intro, that is the kind of sound I am looking for but from an FM Synthesizer).
Sorry for the lengthy post, I thought if there is anyone who can answer this then that is probably you! Thanks in advance!

      Hi, thanks for watching!
I'd say it's possible. (see my video ua-cam.com/video/BWIAPlFlJik/v-deo.html for some examples).
But overall, it's just much less time-consuming to use a (virtual) analog synth for these sounds.

@@mr_floydst Thanks! I thought so, I guess its complexity is probably why no one bothered programming it on an FM Synth but its good to know that it may as well be possible. I’ll check that video out as well!

oh ist der neu? ich spiele schon lange mit dem Gedanken den RF CS zu holen ....

The CS is one of my favourite synths. It is not as versatile as some other synths (e.g. MicroFreak) but it is quick and easy to create sounds with. I use mine a lot.

Hi! Nein, den hab ich schon (mit Unterbrechung) sehr lange. Der CS ist nicht schlecht, aber dieser hier ist der beste von den 4en.

I think Yamaha suggests not starting with a one hertz carrier fixed operator cause it will destroy the speakers

Hi, thanks for watching! That's highly unlikely - the Reface DX' amplifier is working within certain limits that you can't "break".

who cares if the initial waveform sounds "metallic" if you are going to FM them?

Hi, thanks for watching! On a 4 operator fm synth / any other FM synth, the amount of feedback applied to the operators makes a huge difference on the resulting sound. So yes, I do care. :-)
