Genari Korganov: The Old Nurse's Tale (Erzählung der alten Wärterin) op 25 No 7 Album for the Young

"Erzählung einer Wärtin" (The Old Nurse's Tale) is from the Album for the Young of Genari Korganoff (1858 - 1890), a Russian-Armenian composer and pianist who unfortunately has been largely forgotten and who was once one of the most celebrated young composers in the Russian Tsarist Empire. Korganoff studied composition for a time in Germany with Carl Reinecke and Salomon Judassohn.
Although Genari Korganoff mostly wrote pieces in the mould of German masters as well as Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov, he is not wrongly regarded as one of the founders of Armenian music. Korganoff wrote several pieces inspired by the folk music of his homeland, such as the Rhapsodie Armenienne and the Rhapsodie caucasienne.
"Erzählung einer Wärterin" gives a flavour of the more foreign soundscape. The title is - one must say: unfortunately - singular for the Caucasian influence in the album for the youth. The next piece, the Russian dance, with which Korganoff concludes the album for the youth probably also contains elements of the music of his homeland. The title is certainly inspired by The Nurse's Tale from Pyotr Tchaikovsky's well-known Album for the Young (Children's Album), which in turn was inspired by Robert Schumann's Album für die Jugend (Album for the Young).
