Hyperfixation in ADHD is when someone is working on a specific project/task of theirs that they have an intense need to solve or finish, and will either forget or refuse to listen to body signals like hunger or needing to pee in order to get it done without any distraction. A lot of people refer to this as hyperfocus but hyperfixate is also a correct term that refers to that. Special interest is used for both autism and ADHD and indicates wanting to absorb everything about an external interest that provides great satisfaction. The interest tends to stay on the mind, meaning people with special interests will reference them at seemingly random times, but to the neurodivergent person, it just makes sense to reference it. A lot of times, people with adhd will have some special interests be in shorter bursts than those with autism, but both are considered special interests nonetheless, because of the intensity of the fascination. For me my special interests tend to come full circle, one month I’m completely invested in a cartoon, the next month or may be Abbott elementary, the next month it may be a UA-camr, and it usually goes on like that but I tend to gravitate back to the same special interests every few months, they just rotate in and out naturally.

The teacher is able to engage with the child, and the child stops being disruptive and starts to pay attention. Not everything should be a "My way or the Highway." I'd rather have a teacher who is able to work with children and help them succeed than a teacher who pushes them away. It's not about you and how you feel, it's about helping kids learn, and not all children are good with sitting still at lectures.
Hopefully this encourages parents to not be so quick to punish their kids. Turn their hyper fixation into a positive thing. He’s only 6. Even I would be annoyed with Micah but I wouldn’t be so quick to send him to Ava.

This remains such a good example of how to self correct as a teacher but also how to meet students where they're at. This episode genuinely could be used as a teaching tool for how to work with ND students or even just a NT kid whos hyperfixating on something cause that does happen too.
